Moisturiser? For dds shiny, spotty skin that goes red and tight after washing

She is 14 and has quite a few small pimply spots. She uses le roche posay facial wash but her skin always looks red and rashy after washing (it settles after an hour). I think she needs a soothing moisturizer but she's nervous because of her spots.

She doesn't want to wear a foundation .

Good things.

Designed for young skin.

My DD uses simple moisturising face wash and acnicide cream on the spots. She finds many face washes for spots make her skin dry.
She varies on her moisturiser but needs it less now but is using clean and clear by j&j ATM.

I'd suggest two products from The Ordinary. Their Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum is oil and silicone free, soothes skin, heals and prevents spots, and is itself moisturising due to the inclusion of pentylene glycol. Then follow with their Natural Moisturising Factors, again oil and silicone free. It's not the richest moisturiser out there by a long way, but it doesn't need to be on top of the niacinamide serum and with skin like your daughter's.

Thanks! Like the sound of the ordinary

Vanishing Cream from Lush. It's fairly expensive (for me anyway lol) but it's as light as a feather, sinks in beautifully and made my skin feel lovely.

sanitygirl · 05/09/2019 13:36

Honestly I would suggest she changes her cleanser if her skin is red and irritated afterwards - it sounds like it is too harsh on her skin. She could try a simple soap in the morning and a gentle cleansing balm in the evening? I really rate Moogoo soap (currently free delivery as they are trialling new website) and Lucky Cloud cleasing balm and facial oil

I wouldn't be trying to avoid silicones at all OP. you'll want the "slip" and delivery of active ingredients they provide.

If the cleanser causes a reaction, have her step away from that. CeraVe and Neutrogena Visibly Clear both have generally good reputations for teenage skin, and possibly the mario badescu lotion for any breakouts.

KatharinaRosalie · 05/09/2019 14:00

Try Dr Hauschka cleansing cream. I thought I had spotty and oily skin and also tried to kill the spots will all kinds of harsh treatments, but turned out my skin was just sensitive and irritated.

DawgLover · 05/09/2019 14:08

I think that happens a lot KatharinaRosalie with people thinking breakouts mean skin is definitely oily, and getting into a vicious circle with salicylic washes and all sorts. It took me years to figure out what worked for my skin

MumUndone · 05/09/2019 14:34

Best thing for spotty, sensitive skin is very gentle cleanser (e.g. cetaphil) followed by benzoyl peroxide at night (5% strength at the most) and a fragrance free moisturiser during the day, e.g. Simple.

Manontry · 05/09/2019 14:41

She will have acne. Both other dcs had it quite badky

Bp really irritayes her.

Tea Tree oil one from
body shop is great for my oily acne prone skin

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 05/09/2019 14:59

CeraVe. I'm using it ATM, it's cheap and really good.

It's horses for courses. Silicones on my skin is pepperoni pizza with extra sweetcorn time. That The Ordinary have so many formulations without has been a godsend to me.

timshelthechoice · 05/09/2019 15:17

My teen DD has the same type of skin and uses Cetaphil gentle cleanser followed by Differin at night and Cetaphil moisturiser with SPF every morning. She uses Cheeky wipes reusables on her face and just pops one in the wash every night. She likes to sleep with an eye mask so makes sure to wash all of them weekly.

Also make sure her pillow case is washed weekly.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 05/09/2019 15:23

I'd ditch the face wash and use a clean wash cloth an tepid water. Sounds like the wash is too harsh for her skin.

RubySlippers77 · 05/09/2019 15:34

Have you tried aqueous cream OP? You can use it for cleansing and/ or moisturising - if you have any areas which are particularly dry just put extra on and wait for it to sink in. It was great for my skin when I had horrible sore, red patches (and is very cheap!) - good luck Smile

LemonPrism · 05/09/2019 16:19

Cetaphil - it's non-comodogenic (doesn't clog) but is great on my dry skin, isn't greasy.

I hate the la Roche posts cleansers - I'd get her something like the Liz Earle hot cloth cleanser.

Manontry · 05/09/2019 16:22

I remember dd1 used cetaphil when she had acne and it was very strongly perfumed.

Would she try coconut oil as a cleanser? Rub it on gently and wipe off with a face cloth and warm water

CurbsideProphet · 05/09/2019 16:35

That sounds a bit like peri oral dermatitis. It can come hand in hand with acne and as a result of skin being irritated by products. I found it an absolute ball ache and when I saw a Dermatologist he recommended washing my face and moisturising with Dermal 500 lotion. I buy it from the pharmacy rather than having it prescribed. Dermal 500 works like an anti inflammatory which can help red and tight skin.

Mine still flares up occasionally now when I'm over tired (or when I used an old sun cream Angry) and all that works for me is taking Lymecycline and using Dermal 500.

You sound a lovely mum trying to help. I had a nightmare with my skin aged 11-15 and my mum wasn't helpful at all.

Manontry · 05/09/2019 18:02

She has had dermatitis. That's a great recommendation. I'm so sorry your mum wasn't helpful. It's a difficult age as it is without manky skin!

Liz Earle - you can get it in boots. Choose a light daily moisturiser not a thick one. No chemicals in the products and Not as expensive as the big cosmetic brands.

EmeraldIsle81 · 05/09/2019 18:13

Oh and don't use clearasil or any of those type of teenage brand washes for her skin / they are terrible. Tea tree wash from body shop and the wee spot/pimple dabber works a treat. Use a cosmetic sponge or face cloth only gently on the skin - no scrubbing!
