Clarks brogues

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 15:30

So, I've been taken in by all the posts on here and have bought some Clarks brogues. I think they'll probably look okay with culottes, cropped trousers and wide-legged trousers, but really not sure about skirts and dresses. I'm a short size 13-ish.

I've just put them on to get used to them and DP has announced that they look really nice but also that I look like Mr Noisy. He's now wandering around shouting, "I'd like a piece of meat" at random intervals. I need to take them back, don't I?

Or return him instead?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 15:33

Grin. He has his uses...

With trousers they're my go-to and I don't even think about it. But I'm more careful about wearing them with skirts and dresses. Do you normally trust his judgement?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 15:56

His judgement isn't bad generally. It probably doesn't help that I'm currently wearing them with very short shorts and a pair of ankle socks!

Pmsl at Mr Noisy .

I'm hankering after some brogues myself (returning to work blah, blah). I haven't tried the clarks ones but like the look of Dr Martens ones.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 16:00

Love DM brogues. DP has some and he looks gorgeous in them (and not at all like Mr Noisy!). I find DMs too heavy for a full day on my feet at work though.

I nearly started a post about brogues with skirts last night, and do have my eye on these same Clarkes' ones. Not my usual style but I've been wearing chunky plimsolls with skirts over the summer and was wondering if brogues would be the autumnal equivalent. So afraid I have no wise words but am watching with interest as if they only look good with trousers they aren't for me.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/08/2019 16:06

I love my brogues (I have picolinos ones) but I'm mindful of wearing them with dresses because I have quite long feet and as they are so flat they can emphasise that, plus it's a short step from edgy-preppy to frumpy- librarian and it's not my forte to always see when that line has been crossed!

Love them with trousers though, especially slim leg crops/cigarette leg in autumn.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 16:07

When I was skinny, I'd have worn them with black tights and a mini skirt with no worries at all. Now I'm not skinny, I'm less convinced.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 16:07

My feet are small and very narrow.

The skirts I wear them with finish just above my ankle, one is denim and the other is in a fairly heavy cotton canvass. It's probably a bit blue stockingy but I'm quite partial to that look. Plus - and this is probably the most important bit - I do have decent ankles. (The rest of my legs are going to seed but my ankles are holding firm, bless them.)

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2019 16:08

I wear them with everything for work. I have Hamble Oaks in 3 colours, and a chunkier style only in black.

Dd(7) has chosen DM brogues for school (proud). Those are proper Mr Man shoes.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 16:09

I have nice ankles, but a definite tummy and big bust. I think I could easily look matronly, rather than sexy librarian.

OP posts:
Floisme · 24/08/2019 16:11

Yeah that's the risk.

quirkychick · 24/08/2019 16:37

I think I need to try on some brogues Grin. Will I look properly Mr Man, though? I can see how the skirt length could affect the sexy or matronly library look.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 16:49

Yes - I'm thinking that a short skirt (over the knee) might work, but less sure about other lengths.

What's the view on brogues with knee length?

And any tips on styles to look at gratefully received. So far I have Clarkes, DMs, Pikolinos (thank you a pp) and these ludicrously ££ ones from Russell & Bromley.

They’re my work shoes and I buy them as and when there’s no point getting them re-heeled. I generally only wear skirts and dresses, more formal and fitted (suited and booted) and usually with black tights. I’m early 30’s and don’t find them matronly.

I just feel comfortable, confident and don’t think they’re bulky at all. If you get them in different colours I find you can wear them with more casual clothing and floaty tea dresses. They had some pastel pink ones a few years ago which were beautiful.

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2019 16:51

@RemusLuponsBiggestGroupie

You sound a similar shape to me. I’d i wear a skirt it’s on the knee length.

WobblyLondoner · 24/08/2019 16:52

Re previous post.
Knee length skirts obviously (vs knee length brogues). Shock

daphine2004 · 24/08/2019 16:52

I’m referring to the Clarks ones, missed a few posts with different brands.

NothingWithoutEffort · 24/08/2019 16:58

I love my Hamble Oaks. They look really nice with cord mini skirts and tights in winter. I tried them with a skirt and bare legs recently, but I didn't love the look. I do have pretty shapeless ankles though.

Boilingfrog · 24/08/2019 17:03

I really want to wear them with a toast midi skirt and tights... definitely a risk of the local museum kidnapping me to be in their ‘Victorian schoolmistress re-enactment series’ but weirdly I feel I don’t mind that?

Is this the start of the ‘i don’t give a fuck 40s’ attitude?

Also, I want my dream nineteen thirties look of tweed a-line midi skirt, blouse, cardi and brogues to just come back in. If it worked for the mitfords I could work for me. sadly I live in a town where athleisure is the favoured look.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2019 17:04

Knee length brogues Grin. Surely Vivienne Westwood has already invented these? And if not, why not?
