A Baking Apple...what to wear on holiday

1Wildheartsease · 24/08/2019 09:58

Hoping for advice about what to wear in a hot (humid) place with beaches- tourist sites- and possible formal night out.

I have lost almost 50 pounds but am still a bit overweight (a stone) and am an apple with no waist- long legs (with some blue veins now) and smallish bust.
I am in my prime (almost old) and with grown up children.

What should I pack / buy for my 2 week stay?

I think that I need a flattering (miracle) swimsuit
Cool things to sight-see in
Something that looks amazing for eve but won't crush much.

Is there hope? Smile

I don't know, I clicked because of your thread title, but I'm commenting because I love that you describe yourself as in your prime. Thank you. So done with "wrong side of 40". I hope you find the things that suit your prime-ness!

1Wildheartsease · 24/08/2019 13:16

Thank-you too dudsville. I'm still in hope that there might be some good advice.

I'm looking at seasalt just now. Their fabrics look good for hot weather (not something a pale thing like me is used to) and I like their tunics.

No luck on the miracle swim suit /beach cover-up

I just came back from a v hot trip with lots of sightseeing & wore fat face Bermuda shorts (they don’t ride up), linen vest tops from Next & Fat Face and Joseph Siebel super comfy sandals. I was comfortable. I would like to swish around in floaty dresses but the chub rub puts paid to that and the shorts option is too hot,

LemonTreeLemon · 24/08/2019 13:24

I'm an overweight apple. I wear linen trousers and a flattering/ loose top.

LemonTreeLemon · 24/08/2019 13:27

It comes in loads of different colours. I've got the coral one.

1Wildheartsease · 24/08/2019 14:38

I like the look of the sandals Chewbacca. How did the linen tops pack? (Ironing is not my forte)

Lemontreelemon - I really like the shift dress and think I might need to try one one to see if it 'skims' over my lower- fore-curves.

Thank-you both!

Can't help with the clothes but for the veins of your legs, sally Hanson foundation for legs is AMAZING. So light on, won't transfer and will cover up anything on legs it's incredible.

lucylouis · 24/08/2019 14:53

Sorry just re read- only if you want to cover them of course! Well done on your weight loss that's incredible

1Wildheartsease · 24/08/2019 15:04

Thanks for the idea Lucylouis. I had thought about trying a (false) tan for my (Very very white ) skin but hadn't thought of a foundation.

(The weight loss is being achieved with much help from the low-carb-bootcamps on here. )

The miracle style swimsuits look amazing on apples. I found a miracle style costume in Tesco of all places! You're lucky that you have a small bust as you can avoid the matronly look which I often end up with. I find t shirts and dresses that are ruched in at the waist are very flattering on apples.

1Wildheartsease · 24/08/2019 17:44

GreekOddess - I didn't realise that there really is a miracle style for swimsuits! I've just been looking at these.

Sadly, anything gathered/ruched at the waist adds to my egg-like width there.

I love the idea of a swimsuit that takes 10lb off you! (I know I know - I can see the words 'up to' but it would be wonderful to have a preview of my future leaner looks :) )

For evening a Boden jersey maxi dress, they are on sale at the moment. I tend to wear lots of knee length boden jersey dresses during the day on holiday as they are so comfortable, I have 3 or 4 Bought over the years.

This dress was handy on holiday this year.

A highly waisted bikini can be very flattering if you are only a stone overweight. I have had success with speedo sculpture swimwear, it isn’t the most a fashionable but I get lots of wear because I can wear it swimming at home.

Chewbecca · 24/08/2019 19:23

Need to pack the linen tops brand new!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/08/2019 20:30

I find bikinis more flattering than swimsuits for my apple shape, a swimsuit is just too must of an expanse of material which draws attention to my problem area. I usually just wear dresses that can be worn day or night, tunic style with no darts around the middle

1Wildheartsease · 25/08/2019 10:21

Thanks for this. I will try the maxi though never have before as my legs are my slim parts and covering them seems to make a broader general impression. I usually prefer things just above the knee.

Not sure about bikini/tankini . The loose flab/rolls of my remaining 'life belt' (and the whole of my remaining stone) might be more than is fair to share with other beach goers Grin

(However, I will try all these suggestions as I know I have difficulty seeing myself sometimes. It is as if the body changes haven't fully registered )

This linen dress from aspiga is a good buy and very flattering on apple shapes:

www.aspiga.com/collections/dresses-3/products/samara-linen-midi-dress-turquoise

They also have it in a short version too. You can dress it up or down with jewellery and accessories for daytime or evening looks.

I tend to avoid shorts as I find dresses cooler and more comfortable.

Jumpsuits, midis, kaftans...just avoid vest tops and thin spaghetti straps. Wedge heels, espadrilles, block heels are all very flattering too

Maraki · 25/08/2019 10:37

Also tunics and kaftans with 3/4 length leggings are comfortable and flattering for sightseeing

1Wildheartsease · 25/08/2019 10:52

The speedo sculpture wear looks practical and promising. Colour/light at the top where I am about right in size for my height and darkness below where my extra stone lurks.

The linen dresses look so tempting. Do they pack?

These swimsuits from M&S are flattering on my apply figure.

speakfriendandenter · 25/08/2019 11:11

Second the linen shift dresses from Next. I have the blue leopardy one (stolen borrowed from my mum) & the black.
I also got a sucky in costume from there that I felt ok in.
I have a jelly belly a very little waist, love linen trousers & I got some fab Principles wide leg trousers in the Debenhams sale that I love.

justaweeone · 25/08/2019 11:49

Second the Speedo swimsuits
Not only flattering but comfortable as well
I bought some H & M tunic dresses, well try and find link
Size down thought!!

How 'formal' is the formal night?

1Wildheartsease · 25/08/2019 13:49

SO FAR:
Struggling with the links @justaweeone but have found tunics on H&M - you are right, they do look good.

The long linen ones look lovely and I'm very tempted to try. (Still scared of the ironing though.)

How formal? Well - not debutant style but enough to be out of my usual range of cafes and pubs.

Wide leg trousers don't work on me at all. :( I just block out all the light.

Vest tops seem to be making my shoulders look broader :(

Tunics and leggings work :) - and I now have some of these and am looking for more.

Will I be brave enough for just the tunic and bare legs? -MIght need some artificial sun (paint) on my supports first.

The ' sucky in costume' sounds very interesting @speakfriendandenter... tell me more!
