Tipping hairdresser?

ninjamumof2 · 21/08/2019 20:00

Just had haircut and didn’t tip the hairdresser as it cost £65 (in London) I always have the same quandary, should I tip the hairdresser?

I haven’t found one great hairdresser I go to all the time, £50-60 on the haircut seems more than enough so feel stingy if I need to tip.

So be good to know if others don’t tip or if so, what’s the general £

Thanks!

It’s custom to tip the junior that washes your hair as they are on a very low wage.

Jaxinthebox · 21/08/2019 20:03

I dont tip my hairdresser - but I do bring things in for her, homemade easter eggs, ice lolly, just little nice things too.

Lunaballoon · 21/08/2019 20:07

I had a £30 cut recently and gave the hairdresser a £5 tip. I’d normally give around £2 but didn’t have any change. She looked completely gobsmacked which made me think it was maybe too much or not the done thing anymore.

I liked the cut and the price seemed fairly reasonable (for London) so was happy to give it.

I recently booked in for a cut and blow dry and a well-known salon chain. £45. Fine.

I ended up having a toner and a treatment too (don't ask, I didn't have the energy to resist the sell and I was actually pleased with it). Ended up costing £91.

After I paid, my hairdresser 'hovered' very awkwardly. I can only assume she was after a tip, but no fucking way after spending almost double than I originally intended.

Jojo19834 · 21/08/2019 20:47

Oooh I wonder what the consensus will be here, I don’t tip as usually spend a small fortune (above £100) but always wonder whether they expect it

LemonAddict · 21/08/2019 20:51

I don’t tip my hairdresser.

She’s self employed, sets her own prices and should have set her prices at a level where she makes a decent wage, not relying on top-ups from tips.

She probably earns more per hour than me.

Crunched · 21/08/2019 20:53

I tip my hairdresser around 10% but, I always understood, that if your stylist is the salon owner then you do not tip.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 21/08/2019 20:56

I always tip around 5 quid for the hairdresser. If I had my hair washed by someone else who was nice then I may tip them 5 quid too depending on how I’m feeling !

It seems that fewer and fewer posters on MN tip hairdressers beauticians or waiting staff

In the meantime, those of us that continue to do so, enjoy great tables at late notice, the pick of appointment times etc.

Suits me

ninjamumof2 · 21/08/2019 21:06

Thanks all... interesting to hear. I have once tipped when it cost less for haircut and I was happy with cut and service but I do find the hovering awkwardly even more awkward when you’ve paid quite a lot for a cut which is ‘ok’ but not amazing...

It depends. If I’m paying by card and don’t have cash I don’t worry too much. But if the cut was say £55 and I was paying by cash I’d just give £60 and not take the change. Also depends on how happy you are with it, I wouldn’t tip if I wasn’t happy.

DuchessOfDukeStreet · 21/08/2019 21:11

I leave about 10% of the total split between the shampoo trainee (couple of quid), the colourist (usually three quid) and whoever cut my hair (another three quid). If the owner cuts my hair, then I don't leave anything but usually get talked into buying whatever expensive Aveda wonder product she's recommended

^^ Meanwhile, back in the real world... Grin

LemonAddict · 21/08/2019 21:18

I’d avoid any hairdresser that could give me “the pick of appointment times” tbh...

not busy = probably not good.

Cinammoncake · 21/08/2019 21:32

I think it's disappearing because now most people pay by card. It's not like a restaurant where it gives you an option to add a tip, not where I go anyway. So then I'd have to remember to get out cash for a tip, and then hand over some cash which would feel awkward, not like when you could kind of round up the change.

KatyS36 · 21/08/2019 21:51

I stopped tipping my hairdresser when her prices went up substantially, but I still tip in restaurants, I see this as different as waiting staff get a very low wage.....

drivingtofrance · 21/08/2019 21:55

I usually do as she isn't too expensive and I know that the extra money is much appreciated.

But i don't give loads - just a couple of quid.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 21/08/2019 21:59

I don’t tip my hairdresser but I do give her £40 to £50 in a card at Christmas. I think that is of more use to her than the odd few quid every six to eight weeks....

She’s amazing (and admittedly expensive) and has been doing my hair for years.

WanderingTrolley1 · 21/08/2019 21:59

I never tip.

EskiVodkaCranberry · 21/08/2019 22:08

I tip when I have it cut but not when I have it coloured because the price already makes me feel sick! My hairdresser is great and never lurks for a tip or anything like that.

Plasebeafleabite · 21/08/2019 22:11

My Hairdresser is on maternity leave and is doing two appointments days per month for selected customers until she comes back

I’m not naive enough to think she picks me for my witty repartee

HappyParent2000 · 21/08/2019 22:11

We still tip people? I add a few £ into paying by card when eating out but that’s it. I’ve not had to pay by cash in a few years now so not tipped outside a few fancy meals out.

We tend to use just eat or Deliveroo as going out for a meal is way too much of a faff and rarely worth the effort.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/08/2019 22:12

Hell no! My hair costs a fortune, not tipping as well

crazycatgal · 21/08/2019 22:15

No I don't tip because my hair always costs a fortune and I begrudge paying anymore.

I always tip my nail technician because her prices are very reasonable and she goes out of her way to move appointments etc if needed.
