If you are basically always cold in winter can you tell me what coats you have that actually keep you properly warm?
My trusty old coat is getting past its use buy date.

My warmest two coats ever have been a "virgin wool" one from Jigsaw and a massive polyester teddy coat from Zara. Quilted parkas from Uniqlo are also pretty warm.

I have a Harris Tweed overcoat from a charity shop. I know that doesn't sound very helpful but anything H/T is warm and, if not waterproof, surprisingly effective in light rain. (I believe they used to wear it climbing Everest.)

And I have a Seasalt Janelle which I don't particularly like but I can't fault it for efficiency - both warm and waterproof.

Padded almost knee length, light down type filling , from joules last year .
Love it , very light but super warm

This. This is the only jacket that can keep me warm.

Watch out for the smell from some tweed, though - apparently urine is used as a mordant to set the dye and I found that when my tweed coat got damp and then began to steam (eg when coming in after being out in the rain) it gave off a strong smell of wee. Hopefully other people have been luckier and have non-pissy coats but mine was vile. So expensive, too!

I’m also on the lookout for a new winter jacket as I’m always freezing. Got to have a good and not be down filled as I’m vegan.

BigButtons · 16/08/2019 18:59

Thanks!
i think it will have to be padded. i get pathetically cold, even with a thousand layers on. it's very annoying.

I have an American ski jacket with gortex & fleece lining for cold days. And I have a Schofel shooting jacket for general/weekends.

For office, I wear layers under a wool pea coat & big scarf.

orangeshoebox · 16/08/2019 19:02

ime coats protect against wet and wind - against cold I wear jumpers/fleeces.
I tend to go for hiking style, bum covering to help keep my back warm.

.

31RueCambon · 16/08/2019 19:07

I know. I want a smart belted plaid number.

But for me that would only do tilOctober

Floisme · 16/08/2019 19:07

Shock ElizabethinherGermanGarden (I loved that book by the way.)

I've asked my husband if my coat ever smells of wee and he said no and he doesn't have a diplomatic bone in his body so I think mine is ok.

What a bummer for you though. Or rather what a pisser.

ProperVexed · 16/08/2019 19:07

I've got a parka from The Northface that I don't wear very often as it is soooo warm ( and I'm menopausal) . It was fabulous for watching DS football matches in the winter though.

PullingMySocksUp · 16/08/2019 19:12

I moved to Scotland and found my merrel ellenwood (?) not warm enough.
I upgraded to a Didriksons. They have heat levels (max 15?) so you can compare. I got a 14 and have been warm in it.

PullingMySocksUp · 16/08/2019 19:13

*heat levels that should be.

NachosTrafficantes · 16/08/2019 19:17

North face Suzanne triclimate. Waterproof warm bum covering fitted and just well designed. It was revelation that a coat can be warm. Lasted 5 years so far in the north west.

Scoleah · 16/08/2019 19:18

I bought myself a Didrikson Nancy:
It's very lightweight & warm!
I'm always freezing,
Has loads of pockets too!

1busybee · 16/08/2019 19:21

North face long down coat that is waterproof - keeps me warm watching rugby!! Most down coats aren’t also waterproof so you may need to do your research!!

buckleten · 16/08/2019 19:21

Have a look at Land's End, they do very warm padded coats, I have two!

Iggly · 16/08/2019 19:22

I’ve got a Didrikson parka coat. It’s brilliant at keeping me warm and I can’t deal with cold.

TooMinty · 16/08/2019 19:32

Northface 360 parka. Toasty!

31RueCambon · 16/08/2019 20:24

Anybody else in their late forties working in an office desperately wishing they would make a wool look coat with the down filling.

BigButtons · 16/08/2019 20:40

I have a Didrikson and loved it for the first couple of years. I have found that after a few washes it had lost that initial warmth though and last winter didn’t quite cut it anymore.

@31ruecambon I were a uniglo down jacket under my wool coat. Unobtrusive and modular.

BigButtons · 16/08/2019 20:42

I hanker after the Canada goose coats but they are waaay out of my price bracket 🙁
