Do you have a 'uniform'?

incontrolofmyownlife · 15/08/2019 16:19

I don't mean a work uniform (although if you wanted to come and discuss that, feel free Grin)

I mean a style that you stick with daily, and just wear variations of? I'm stuck in a style rut, and feel like my wardrobe is full of things I bought a few years ago that aren't my style now, and not things I feel comfortable/confident in. DD is 15 months old and can count on one hand the number of clothing items I've bought myself since she was born!

I want to find my 'uniform' so I know what to look for going forward!

Hopeful bump!

I do! Always jeans or trousers, then a top and cardigan and sometimes a scarf. Have about 25 cardigans. Mainly wear same colours too!

Was bemoaning the safeness on here but a poster said if you know what suits don’t get too distracted by trends.

I am always in awe of the girls at work who come in each day with a totally different outfit, their wardrobes must be huge or else they are getting rid of stuff a lot

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/08/2019 23:24

I have several “uniforms” depending on the time of year, which maybe isn’t helpful.

Summer:

Midi-skirt, tucked in t-shirt
Midi-dress
Culottes/wide-leg trousers, tucked in t-shirt

Winter:

A-line short-ish skirt, opaque tights, fitted jumper - crew or polo neck
Culottes/wide-leg trousers, slightly cropped jumper, sitting on waistband - crew or polo neck
Skinny jeans, blouse, crew-neck jumper over the top

Summer and winter I also wear “barrel leg” jeans, with either tucked in tee, fitted jumper, or slightly cropped jumper.

Footwear is trainers (black or white Stan Smiths, black or grey Continental 80s, various Nikes), brogues, Chelsea boots, or DM boots. I have Saltwater sandals and flip-flops for hot days, but don’t really like wearing those.

All of the above work for work, and not-work, there are just variations. I tend to keep work/not-work clothes fairly separate, but am able to be fairly smart/casual at work.

I think the key is knowing what suits your shape.i have a small waist/flat tummy, but big hips/bum. I need clothes that define my waist, so these “uniforms” work for me. My friend is a more “apple” shape, and her “uniforms” are completely different - slim trousers or jeans, and more floaty top, or shift/tunic style dresses. She hates anything that highlights her waist or stomach, but has super-slim bum and hips - her floaty blouses would make me look triangle shaped.

Yes, I guess I do. In autumn or winter I wear leather leggings with either an loose cashmere jumper or long sleeved silk shirt, in spring its jeans and a silk shirt, and summer short shorts (pale denim or tan twill) and a silk shirt, still always a long sleeved shirt.

I have so many silk shirts, but I prefer darker shades, so lots of forest green, navy, grey and black.

I have to go to quite a lot of very formal things, so wear dresses then, and occasionally I wear a shirt dress (long sleeved) for lunches out, but besides that I don't tend to wear dresses or skirts.

I don't wear short sleeves or sleeveless shirts during the day as I live in a fairly hot place and don't want to faff putting sunscreen on my arms and shoulders every day. Plus I find it cooler to have my arms and shoulders covered. I do always have my shirts rolled up to just above the wrists, so guess they're more 7/8s or 3/4 length.

EatenByDinosaurs · 15/08/2019 23:34

A loose, not an.

Pipandmum · 15/08/2019 23:40

Yes black base layer then a long shirt in summer or long cardigan in winter. The shirts can be quite colourful, or white with a bit of black, but always a black base layer.
Read once Jackie Collins saying she discovered her uniform (black base layer and smart blazer, often leopard print) and stuck to it. It does make getting dressed a lot easier in the morning.

EatenByDinosaurs · 15/08/2019 23:40

Should have added that my silk shirts are all silk chiffon, shiny silk shirts don't suit me.

OMGshefoundmeout · 16/08/2019 10:18

I know I do. Skinny jeans or jeggings with a long loose top and flats every season of the year. The shoes vary from slides/trainers/Skechers/boots depending on the season. The tops are layered and include linen/silk/wool/cashmere. This look highlights my slim arms and legs and obscures my round belly.

I recently found a photo from 6th form (40 years ago) and I was wearing a slightly punky ripped and pinned variation of the same silhouette.

For formal situations I used to like prom style fit and flare dresses but since the menopause I’ve lost my waist and so now wear fitted shifts. They give the impression of a waistline and allow my still timed arms and legs to give the illusion of slimness.

Alsohuman · 16/08/2019 10:38

Absolutely have a uniform.

Summer is linen trousers, rolled to a couple of inches above the ankle with Breton top or wide shirt and flat sandals or trainers. Occasionally a big, loose midi/maxi dress - I have the much reviled Zara spotty one.

Winter is leggings with a big jumper and scarf and leather hitop trainers or flat ankle boots. Or a knee length dress with rolled trousers and brogues.

VeryNaughtyAuntyLesley · 17/08/2019 18:51

Spend the winters in Portugal so summer and winter are pretty much the same. Daytime, 3/4 skinny jeans in loads of colours, M&S are the best for these keep their shape for 2 wearings, short sleeve top and Clark’s Cloudsteppers salads in matching colour. I do have a couple of pairs of jeans and some Breton tops if it gets cool. Evening, I have dresses, mostly based on navy blue need both long and short sleeves as it does let cooler in the evening in Dec - Feb. Ballet flats, we have a great chain of shops called Parfois, that do these in load of a colours cheap as chip but only last a season. Incidentally, School girl error is doing out for a latish Sunday lunch of a beautiful afternoon in a lovely summer dress and them freezing and having to get a cab home, after wine has been taken. My daytime skin care and make it is also the same every day BB cream factor 15, mascara, clean blusher and tinted lip balm. Like is very cheap and easy when you retire, I urge everyone to do it 😂

VeryNaughtyAuntyLesley · 17/08/2019 18:52

Life not like,,

BoomZahramay · 17/08/2019 18:54

Jeans and a nice top, I'm afraid...

TooMinty · 17/08/2019 19:01

I have a couple of "uniforms":
Leggings, short skirt (denim, khaki, cord), vest top, long cardi, ballet flats for summer or ankle boots for winter
Skinny jeans, Breton stripe top or t-shirt, blazer, ballet flats for summer or ankle boots for winter
Dungarees or denim pinafore or cord pinafore (leggings or tights), long sleeved top, ballets flats in summer, calf length boots in winter
Tunic, leggings, cardigan, footwear any of above

I have a colour palette - blue, black, grey, mustard, khaki (not all at once!)

WaitrosePigeon · 17/08/2019 19:09

Summer
Dress and sandals

Winter
Jeans, poncho and boots

That’s my whole wardrobe in a nut shell Grin

TooMinty · 17/08/2019 19:19

I have just branched out to ponchos @WaitrosePigeon
Where do you get yours?

Kanga83 · 17/08/2019 19:25

Mine is pretty much the same all year round although you wouldn't know from the amount of stuff I have in my wardrobe
Jeans or skinny chino style -black or dark navy.
A top, usually loose fitted and patterned.
A cardigan.
A three quarter sleeve crop swing jacket.
Add scarf for autumn.
Either black or brown Skechers or ankle boot.

For work it's always black or grey trousers, a smart top (but not blouse), a jacket if seeing a client or in court, black smart flats. I have shortish hair and minimal makeup so that's easy.

LaVieilleHarpie · 17/08/2019 20:55

Yup. Either athleisure type wear (I love tracksuits. Nice, figure-hugging, sexy tracksuits.)

Or well-fitting hoodies and jeans/coated leggings/ripped jeans.

Or when jeans (skinnies or boyfriend) with one of them body-thingies, low cut.

And trainers, obviously. Fancy trainers. I love trainers.

StarlightLady · 18/08/2019 06:39

I tend to put trousers and jeans away for the summer, unless I’m doing the garden or the windows or something.

Summer days are very much bright colour sleeveless or short sleeve flowing summer dresses, sometimes with a cardigan and, in the evenings sometimes with stockings (as opposed to tights) if it gets chilly.

Winter is another matter, dark warmer skirts with opaque tights or dark trousers. Jeans or leggings at weekends and, often boots. This has just reminded me of how much l hate winter. Anyone in Singapore or somewhere else that stays warm all year want to make me an offer??? I’m tidy, clean, sleep naked and don’t snore Grin

Probably overall limited change in my “uniform” over recent years.

StellaBoo · 18/08/2019 07:14

Everyone's wardrobe sounds better than mine!

Anyone brave enough to post photos?? I'd love a makeover but don't know where to start

Sigh1738 · 18/08/2019 07:31

As am posting the same photos on the 'what I wore today' thread, here's a couple of my summer uniforms in pics.

Work: either silk blouse tucked into cropped tailored trousers or silk blouse and pencil skirt. Or draped 40s vintage dress. All of these with a blazer (summer). 50s nipped skirt suit or poloneck and midi pencil skirt (winter).

Casual: knotted shirt, high or mid waisted denim pencil skirt, 50s vintage pencil linen or cotton dress (summer), winter: wool midi skirt, poloneck, flat boots or cord mini skirt with ankle boots and a poloneck (cropped or tucked in).

Shoes: flat or heeled brogues, court shoes, flat over the knee boots. Don't wear trainers or sneakers except for the gym. Strappy flat metallic sandals in summer.

Love the sound of everyone's wardrobes. Agree with PP that a uniform will likely depend on what suits you/your body type. Have you tried pinning looks you love on Pinterest and then seeing what themes emerge?

sheshootssheimplores · 18/08/2019 07:36

Love the Jean skirt 🥰

CountFosco · 18/08/2019 13:34

I don't know if I do. I get bored wearing the same silhouette all the time so I have skinnies and wide legged trousers, mini, midi and maxi skirts, blouses for tucking in and loose baggy ones for hanging loose, all shapes of dress. I wear a lot of navy though.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/08/2019 15:43

I don't know if it counts as a uniform, but I wear dresses every day to work. With a smart (waist length, crew neck) cardigan or a soft jersey jacket. It works well for my smart-ish office and wide-ranging role (from greeting visiting VIPs to crawling under desks to connect/sort out computer/phone issues). My dresses are all a similar shape - fitted but not tight, with waist definition. Nothing flowery or with any fullness as it doesn't suit my body shape - high-hipped 8 shape (from the Imogen Lamport website), 8-10, 5ft 3 ins.

I don't really have a weekend uniform though.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/08/2019 16:12

I am a difficult shape to dress as I am very apple-shaped, my waist is the same circumference as my hips. I mostly wear trousers from either Uniqlo or Wallis, they both do stretch trousers that don't look stretch. Uniqlo are my preferred ones as they have three way stretch so I don't have to hitch up my waistband after bending to pick something up from the floor. I have about 7 or 8 pairs from Uniqlo, black, black with pinstripe, off-white with pinstripe and several pairs of denim in different shades. I also have some jersey trousers and leggings from Lands' End Starfish range, they are very thick and soft and don't roll or slip when at the gym.

I have about 25 long-line cotton vests in lots of different colours because I have sensory issues with clothes and always wearing a long vest that goes with my top make all my tops feel the same. My tops come from a lot of different places, but they are all fairly lightweight, the sleeves are mostly bracelet length or 3/4 length. They all have a v-neck or low scoop neck, the co-ordinating vest underneath gives a layered look. They generally fit reasonably snugly over the shoulders and boobs and then are very loose over the stomach and finish at hip length, although some are very loose buttoned cotton shirts. The fabric varies, some are quite restrained wine/plum/black, others are quite floral or diaphanous, but most are natural fabric (cotton, linen or silk). They are all red/purple/pink/burnt orange or dark green as that suits my skin tone. If I wear a black top then I wear a warm coloured vest to avoid looking washed out. I have a few cardigans but rarely need them as I am usually too hot.

Every top can go with every pair of trousers which makes getting dressed in the morning a lot less mental effort.

Now and then I wear a floaty maxi dress on a very hot day, and since I discovered Snag tights I have a few tunic-style knee-length dresses in dark colours that I wear with funky coloured Snag tights and ankle boots.

I also have difficult feet so I wear sensible Ecco shoes or boots in the winter or a pair of Air and Grace sparkly trainers, and wide-fit supportive sandals in the summer.
