Do you have a 'uniform'?

incontrolofmyownlife · 15/08/2019 16:19

I don't mean a work uniform (although if you wanted to come and discuss that, feel free Grin)

I mean a style that you stick with daily, and just wear variations of? I'm stuck in a style rut, and feel like my wardrobe is full of things I bought a few years ago that aren't my style now, and not things I feel comfortable/confident in. DD is 15 months old and can count on one hand the number of clothing items I've bought myself since she was born!

I want to find my 'uniform' so I know what to look for going forward!

Yes I do, it tends to be dresses or skirt with top. In every season and both at home and work. Formal ones for work and more relaxed ones at home. I have a 7yr old and a 13mnth old and I love how easy it is to make a dress an “outfit”. It takes me 2min to get ready and I always feel “done”.
I have lost a lot of weight recently so have ventured out abit to jeans and jumpsuits but always return to dresses. Lazy dressing I guess in a way.

squeakyboy · 18/08/2019 16:33

Jeans, white shirt, merino/cashmere jumper, blundstone boots - it's my coat that gets changed - waterproof for dog walking, tailored for meeting friends for coffee or lunch.

JaceLancs · 18/08/2019 16:45

Sort of!
Footwear is always pointed toes whether boots, flats or heels
Always natural materials, cotton, linen, wool etc
Skinny jeans or trousers or tube skirts with mainly plain tops
Dresses are always shift style or fit and flare
I look awful in anything with a seam or join at waist, belts make me look like a sack tied up
Coats and jackets are better fit on me with raglan sleeves

Loving the sound of all these 'uniforms'! Thanks for coming and sharing with me Smile after reading all of your posts I've reached the following conclusions:

  • I need to find a different style of jeans I like. Have lots of skinny jeans but don't find them particularly comfortable anymore (probably because I could do with going up a size but refuse to Grin) so need to try some others on, and stop wearing them every day.
  • I prefer dresses way more than I used to! I bought a midi dress from good old Matalan a few months ago and have worn it loads of times! Think I might invest in a few nice dresses for winter to team with tights...
  • I need to make more of an effort with accessories. Have looked on the 'what your wearing today' thread and the accessories really can make a big difference to an outfit! I'm very lucky and have lots of handbags and jewellery, I'm just too lazy to mix up with I wear.

I really do. High waisted straight leg/mom jeans- belted, with a loose fit shirt or jumper tucked in, or half tucked in,or tied up in front if it's a shirt and I want a change- sleeves always rolled up. Slogan T shirt if it's hot. Sandals if it's hot, trainers if it's not. Gold pendants.

In autumn/winter boots, tights, skirt, some sort of long sleeved top or jumper again tucked in and sleeves rolled, slouchy cardigan if layering, wool coat and a huge scarf. Otherwise a shirt dress and thre rest the same. Not a huge deal of variety but it's my uniform for sure

incontrolofmyownlife · 18/08/2019 20:26

Ok so next question...

Do you all feel like you wear the same clothes all the time? Or do you have loads of clothes but all very similar?

Is it possible to have a capsule wardrobe if you have a 'uniform' do you think?

Let’s put it this way, I own more than a dozen Breton tops! And will probably buy more!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/08/2019 20:41

I have a lot of dresses, and I now replace rather than add to my collection. More than half of my dressed are year round ones, apart from freezing or boiing hot weather. So they get a lot of wear and do wear out. I would call my dress/cardigan collection a capsule, definitely. I tend towards simplicity and minimalism.

TooMinty · 18/08/2019 20:51

@Alsohuman - I have 4 or 5 and I thought that was excessive 😂

JaceLancs · 18/08/2019 21:11

In answer to your question
I have heaps of clothes so always feel like I’m wearing something different
I have same or similar thing in lots of colours eg a very plain boring merino cardigan from Benetton via tkmaxx which I have in black, navy, cream, yellow, pale blue and an orangey red

Babdoc · 18/08/2019 21:22

Summer: white T shirt and jeans
Winter: white T shirt, jeans and a fleece.
Saves so much time/money/ hassle!
Being retired, I can please myself. Although at work I was in surgical scrubs all day, so just wore jeans and a t shirt anyway, before and after!
As you can tell, I don’t give a shit about fashion and have never been interested in clothes.
The DDs had to drag me to a shop to “help” me choose evening wear for our first cruise this year. I refused silly frocks point blank, and ended up with... trousers and a top!

Alsohuman · 18/08/2019 21:26

Just out of interest, why are you posting on S&B @babdoc?

Babdoc · 18/08/2019 22:30

I didn’t notice there was such a category, Alsohuman- this post just came up on active threads, so I assumed it was for general discussion!

incontrolofmyownlife · 19/08/2019 10:19

@Babdoc absolutely for general discussion, you've answered my question Smile when I was at college I was very much a jeans and t-shirt girl! I just don't like the jeans so much these days...

In the winter - short a-line skirt ( often leather), thin merino round neck or polo jumper, opaque tights, ankle boots, interesting coat (have a few vintage ones and some Westwood ones)
Or jeans/waxed jeans, t-shirt/silk shirt/cashmere jumper and fitted jacket with ankle boots or heels
Everything dark- black/ forest green/ navy/plum

Summer I wear lots of floaty midi dresses in bright colours

It's like I've got the wardrobes for two totally different people!!

VeryNaughtyAuntyLesley · 19/08/2019 17:14

When I first retired I went through my wardrobe and wore everything once and then decided if it was in or out. So have ended up with a streamline selection and yes most of it goes with easel other. I have to say I was ruthless, all to the charity shop. Obviously some fancy dresses, bags and shoes are stand alone, but still are predominately navy.

MrsElf · 19/08/2019 19:57

I’m (reluctantly) joining babdoc in her uniform. I love my jobs, I love my dogs, I also love dressing up, but unfortunately those things aren’t compatible.
I have one pair of jeans for summer, and one pair of moleskin trousers for winter. Various fading/state of destruction of jean, various colours of moleskins. A men’s t shirt (most are Abercrombie or holister, so essentially the same t shirt, different label) in summer, and a check shirt in winter, with a woolly jumper. Wellies (same pair, 3 colours so I can rotate easily) in winter, single pair of boots/old ventilated wellies in summer, flip flops if very very hot summer. I have recently tragically been converted to [whispers] crocs.
Although I possess bold floral jumpsuits, lovely dresses, leggings and skirts and nice tops, they appear fleetingly and are seen about as regularly as a full moon. More and more, they are the same items in different colours (especially the trousers, which I hate shopping for as I seem to be a weird shape) - and I’ve come down to wearing the newest jeans/moleskins and jumpers for pub trips etc in the winter, so I don’t feel like I’m wrecking ‘good’ clothes for working in.
My going out boots (5 pairs/6) are now the same pair in 2 lengths and two colours. One small bonus is that new wellies and boots don’t need to be worn in, as my feet are so used to them.
I keep meaning to clear out a lot (and there is a lot) of unworn stuff, as some of it is properly out of fashion, and now I know what fits (trouser shopping is finally VERY fast Grin) and what suits me, but as some of it is over 20 years old with school name tags still in and still fits me, it seems a shame to waste things I could still put on to walk the dogs. In a mudstorm, which guarantees no one to see me, perhaps.

Alsohuman · 19/08/2019 20:28

Sorry @Babdoc, I just find it odd that someone with no interest in clothes would post here.

Sigh81 · 19/08/2019 21:42

Well, I womanfully resisted any purchases these last few months until I saw that the shoes I had my eye on for literally months had nearly sold out (and had some more money off in the sale): www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productID=0219-O134-007H065&productvarid=0219-O134-007H065-TAN-37&refpage=search/results

This way I can keep my worn and much loved Clarks brogues to walk to work in and keep these for the office or when am walking less.

mamaduckbone · 19/08/2019 22:14

Yep - very dull but it's how I feel most comfortable:
Dark blue jeans or linen trousers, usually rolled up, stripy or plain coloured longish t-shirt, crew neck jumper or cardigan. Mostly navy, grey, white with a bit of colour - currently mustard yellow.
Denim skirt or shorts in summer (shorts only on holiday really)
Birkenstocks, vans, Stan Smiths or shorts boots (desert boot or Chelsea boots)
I have bought some mustard saltwater sandals this summer which I love.
