Fed up of skinny jeans

Arghhhh I’ve got completely fed up of skinny jeans, my thighs are too big and my knees.
But there’s not a lot of choice atm out there.
Help?!?
I’m 5ft 5in and a 14 on top , with anywhere between a 16-18 jean size.TBh I normally buy them from Tesco’s!!

I'm with you. Not wore jeans all summer, feel like my legs are being strangled.
Saw Lisa Snowdon doing an item on This Morning yesterday, there were some nice looser leg shapes/ Might be worth having a look.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/08/2019 22:28

Eh? There's loads of choices out there! No one style is "the" style so that means there's lots to choose from.

I haven't worn skinny jeans for years. These days I wear the equivalent of men's Levi 501s (but a craft jeans selvedge version). Takes me back to my youth as my mum bought me my first ever pair of 501s for passing my exams at school. How I loved those jeans! I seem to have done a full circle as now I'm 49 and wearing men's jeans again. They look great. And no issues with being too tight on the thighs!

Thistly · 14/08/2019 22:32

Skinny jeans really dominate the cheaper clothes shops. Primark for example might do 3 out of 15 styles not skinny, and the chances of them having any in in your size when you go it is zilch. I totally sympathise.

Thecrown3 · 15/08/2019 06:23

I’d happily pay up to £40-50 for a good pair, but in the mid- range places I look I feel bamboozled as everything seems to include the word skinny ! I’m going to try look out girlfriend jeans I think , if anybody knows a good shop/brand for them?
I look at photos of myself in them and feel I look silly( dp says I look fine.. but!)

Monki (part of the H&M group) do a great range of jeans in exciting shapes. Proper sturdy denim, organic cotton. £40.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/08/2019 07:28

M&S do stretch "mom" jeans that are a flattering shape op.

EleanorLavish · 15/08/2019 09:10

M&S have lots of styles that are not skinny. Well within your price range too.

BarberaofSeville · 15/08/2019 09:16

Boden have a good range of styles. There's always a code for at least 20% off knocking around, which would bring them near/within your price range.

Thecrown3 · 15/08/2019 10:01

Thank you all- I’ll have a look at M&S and Sainsbury’s.
Boden is only online though isn’t it?

BarberaofSeville · 15/08/2019 12:56

Yes but you can order lots and usually the returns are free.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 15/08/2019 13:21

M&S slim or relaxed fit are the best for giving a bit of balance at the bottom and avoiding the parsnip look!

Thecrown3 · 15/08/2019 13:53

I dread returning to bootcut jeans though :-(

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 15/08/2019 14:23

They don't have to be bootcut, though. Something that's a bit wider all the way down and doesn't taper in at the ankle is much more forgiving than skinny, and to me, it looks a lot fresher than the same old skintight shape.

I personally think bootcuts do look better on me and will happily wear them if they have a resurgence, but even I would have to admit they're very dated just now. However, I think the same about skinnies. I think the fashion industry has done a real number on us by making us believe this is a universally flattering cut.

thedevilinablackdress · 15/08/2019 14:50

There's a world of jeans beyond skinny or bootcut!

zinrepus · 15/08/2019 14:57

Gap has a bunch of things, but their sizing varies wildly between cuts and often don't have 18s in stock.

I was really please recently at Next. I'm and 18 and 5' 9" and they even have long, short, and regular cuts. Straight leg, boot cut, relaxed fits. I tried on about 6 different styles, but the last one was a DREAM. I also then used them to get some loose fitting longer shorts because I'm a 30 year old who wants to dress like an 8 year old boy... :)

InglouriousBasterd · 15/08/2019 15:01

I’ve just got Sainsbury’s straight leg - they’re great. Also 11 quid at the moment due to 25% off!

InglouriousBasterd · 15/08/2019 15:02

Their girlfriend jeans are also brilliant

Thecrown3 · 15/08/2019 15:40

Tried Sainsbury’s gf jeans - bit too baggy :-( the search continues Grin

PixieLumos · 15/08/2019 15:44

There are loads of other jeans out there - if anything skinny jeans are starting to look a bit dated. Try the high waisted ‘mom’ jeans - very comfy and flattering.

motherofgod2 · 15/08/2019 16:39

M&S Slim or Straight Leg

Next Boyfriend Jean's (nice rolled up)

Primark have wide leg cropped jeans that I love. They also do straight leg and mom jeans which aren't as hideous as they sound.

Skinny jeans are over. Probably the mom style is most fashionable now

tonsattingforbjudes · 15/08/2019 20:27

Mint Velvet Dakota are great. Slim but definitely not skinny. Short, regular and long lengths. Even better when they're in the sale for £22!

Thecrown3 · 17/08/2019 19:08

Success !! M&S had about 8 different styles of jeans and most of them were £19.50.
Thanks all !

AuntieStella · 17/08/2019 19:13

Damart catalogue has inexpensive boot cut

Skinnies won't vanish completely - they're the best for showing off lovely boots. And as sports clothing (based on running tights/leggings) won't be going anywhere, then the overall silhouette is still going to work with narrow ankles (skinny/straight/mom)

Thecrown3 · 17/08/2019 19:24

I hated wearing bootcut years ago so was happy to see them go!!
I bought extra slim “ lily” jeans in M&S, just a slightly looser skinny jean Grin
