Do any of you wear brogues to work?

Do they look good?

I see them on models and think they look so comfy and stylish but feel I will look like a tit.

If you wear them are you super skinny and tall and 20?

Or are any of you slightly 'curvier' in your 30/40s?

I really want to wear them to work with a suit, dress etc but I need to know others are successfully wearing them that don't just look like Kate Moss!!

@SolitudeAtAltitude was that recently?

@BikeRunSki do you wear them with tights when you wear them with a dress?

I've got Hamblle Oaks which I don't get on with. They're gold and glittery.

I get on much better with my other Clarkes brogues (Andorra Trick?).

Strangely, I find brogues hard to wear. I've got wide feet that are small. Love them though and wear with skinnies or trousers.
I like them with skirts too - just not for me.

BikeRunSki · 12/08/2019 08:06

@MrsTumbletap if it’s cold

sluj · 12/08/2019 08:20

How do they look with traditional length trousers, ie no real sock or ankle visible? I desperately need a change from ankle boots Grin

Miseryisabutterfly · 12/08/2019 08:29

They don’t suit me at all 😢 I’m 5’8”, size 8-10, with reasonable legs but shit ankles. Ankles are the problem.

dancemom · 12/08/2019 08:30

I wore mine with skinny ankle length trousers and with shirt dresses and tights too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2019 08:35

I've got small narrow feet and slim ankles but am busty and these days have a belly as well. I look like an evil French teacher from Mallory Towers in them.

Whattodoinleeds · 12/08/2019 08:37

The Rogue Matilda ones are absolutely amazing!

PrivateIsles · 12/08/2019 08:41

Yes I do - I was just thinking yesterday how I was looking forward to bringing them out again for autumn! Mine are from Aldo (last winter).

I'm not tall or slim but I think brogues look nice on anyone. I have had times where I've changed skirts for fear of looking a bit too "Malory Towers school mistress" though (eg a sort of tweedy/A-line skirt) - I usually wear mine with trousers.

PrivateIsles · 12/08/2019 08:43

Remus Shock Grin funny x-post re Malory Towers! Those illustrations must have really stayed with us!!

CherryPavlova · 12/08/2019 08:45

I don’t when it’s meetings or keynotes and I need heels but on days where work means lots of walking I do. Nothing fancy but very comfortable.

M0RVEN · 12/08/2019 08:45

I’m in my 50s and wear them now with cigarette trousers and in the winter with dresses and opaque tights.

greenlavender · 12/08/2019 08:58

I do yes, I love them. 50s, curvy.

Another vote for Clarks Hamble Oaks, particularly because they do a wide fit and half sizes, so they actually fit my small wide feet!

Once I found out how much I loved them, I googled and came across hundreds of different colourways - try the Clarks outlet or eBay once you've established your size/fit. Sparkly ones, shiny ones, tweed ones, all sorts of lovely colours... I might have a few too many pairs.

Have also got some monk style ones, which I think were from ASOS, along with a couple of other pairs of their own-brand brogues - leather, good fit and seem to be pretty well-made for the price.

I wear them with almost anything - skirts/dresses with or without tights, trousers (various cuts), jeans... I think I'm so used to seeing them on my feet that I can't see now if they do look frumpy with a particular outfit but I also don't care because they look smart for work and are comfortable.

Oh, and with autumn on the horizon, there will be loads of beautiful brogue boots in the shops... Dune had some great ones (tan and black) a few years ago that are still going strong but as they're 'old' they still need to be replaced

MrsTumbletap · 12/08/2019 09:45

@sluj I did some research yesterday and there was a video called how to wear brogues and the fashion guru lady said you should have a little bit of skin showing between the trouser and the ankle. Not so much it shortens your leg but not so long that the trouser is touching the shoe either.

It's a shoe minefield!

It seems at my work women either apply trot around in heels all day (how??!my feet are in agony after about half hour) or they wear pumps.

But some wear brogues and I think they look so cool. But it would then seem that my wardrobe would need a change as the dresses I have don't suit brogues I don't think.

MulberryPeony · 12/08/2019 21:53

I definitely need a bit of ankle between trousers/jeans and brogue. I wish I could get away with skirts or dresses with them but I can’t. I have some Clark’s Hamble Oaks and quite fancy a pair in a different colour without the brogue holes.

BlackSwan · 12/08/2019 21:55

Nup. No chance. Unflattering.

Sparklepunk · 12/08/2019 21:59

I am in my 50s and wear Grenson ‘Rose’ triple welt with half mast trousers with turn ups and socks, or dresses and opaque tights. I like Toast clothes mainly.

Alsohuman · 12/08/2019 22:46

Comfort beats flattering all day long.

CountFosco · 13/08/2019 05:40

If I'm wearing long wide legged trousers I wear trainers rather than leather laceups. Thinking about summer I wear loafers more with skirts because the lower vamp is more flattering. But they are still substantial shoes, hate ballet pumps with a passion (plus they are dated, just like heels).

LellyMcKelly · 13/08/2019 06:22

I’m 51 and have a black pair and a navy pair of Red or Dead brogues. I’ve work either pair to work every day for the last 2 years with normal work clothes. They’re really comfortable, practical, and smart. Most men wear brogues every day and nobody thinks anything of it. Far more sensible that disabling yourself running around in heels.

LellyMcKelly · 13/08/2019 06:24

The Shoe Embassy also do some fantastic funky brogues.
