Make me glow

I've never worn a highlighter or anything like that and don't really know how to. I'm happy with my foundation (Double Wear) and blusher (Benefit Dandelion) but feel it all looks a bit dull and flat.

I don't want to look greasy or shiny but feel I need something! Mac, Benefit, Boots No 7 or any of the products in Boots or Superdrug would be best for me. I wondered about Benefit Shybeam. Or would I be better with a bit of creamy blushes along with the Dandelion? Or what??!!

I like how Sali Hughes always looks a bit glowy but still quite natural.

Any ideas? x

Oh and I'm approaching 50, with skin that is fairly clear, quite pale and neither dry nor greasy.

Just posted this Lisa Eldridge tutorial link on another thread...this is a glowy, natural look for more mature skin.

Some great product recommendations - the Bobbi Brown Balm is excellent, and I was given a sample of their Illuminating Balm which is subtle and lovely.

Thanks. She's much older than me!

Will have a look at the Bobbie B but not a brand I tend to use tbh.

Just looked. Horribly expensive! Mac/Benefit prices is the most I'm willing to pay.

Perhaps a glowy primer? I have an e.l.f one which is quite nice and as it's under foundation it doesn't look too shiny. Also an illuminating setting spray (again I have an e.l.f one) can do wonders. I do like highlighters - I stick to powder ones and if they look a bit too bright you can always dampen the effect with your normal powder. I prefer the dewy look too!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2019 10:46

Thanks. I don't think a primer is what I'm after though.

I'm wondering if a sort of sheer blush cream is what I might need. Has anybody tried the Mac cream ones?

They're called Cream Colour Base.

Ooh this was my mission too and I've finally cracked it!

I too didn't believe in the power of primer but it's definitely helped my skin look glowy and the right side of dewy - Benefit Porefessional.

Honestly don't underestimate primer I can't believe how much difference it's made to me! You can get the small testers of it (not magazine type ones, actual mini tubes) for £3-5 on eBay to give it a go before committing to a full price one.

For glowy skin I would recommend MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish Highlighter - you'll look fresh faced and well refreshed like you've had a good nights sleep, rather than looking a love island extra Wink

Glossier do a lovely sheer cream blush and a glowy highlight stick. I use both and they look very fresh and natural

izzybobsmum · 08/08/2019 13:15

I use First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturiser and Clinique Even Better Glow foundation. Leaves my skin looking healthy and dewy. And the primer smells amazing!!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/08/2019 13:17

Try some Hourglass powder or similar on top?

DW is very matt, it's never going to look glowy.

Maybe mis with some Strobe cream?

Anois · 08/08/2019 13:17

Double wear gives a flat finish. So maybe a different foundation would give the effect you want?

somewheresorted · 08/08/2019 13:26

Laura Mercier Tinted moisturiser - illuminating. Gives me skin a really lovely, fresh glow.

Try the Borjois healthy mix foundation it gives you a wonderfully healthy glow , I wouldn't try anything else

My friend also recently bought a Becca Primer- I believe it was in a tall thin glass tube and her skin looks beautiful with it on, it was pricey and she's not usually into splashing the cash on makeup but she told me it has genuinely changed her entire face with it on

I think the key to a glow is within your base products, adding highlight here, cream blusher there isn't going to give you that overall glow, it has to be your base

Maybe a spritz of that Mac fix plus spray too could help

SouthWestmom · 08/08/2019 13:40

I've just started using Strobe cream (mac, £25) and it's fab.

yikesanddang · 08/08/2019 13:46

I think you need to rethink your current regime. Double wear is very matte. As is the benefit blusher. If you want to stick with the same brand, you could try DW light. But I would start with the foundation and go for a new one that is less matte. Every brand does st least one glowy foundation. It's better than slapping something shiny on top of a very matte base

teenmumuk · 08/08/2019 13:48

Mac mineralise skin finish in soft & gentle is amazing for a subtle glow

SouthWestmom · 08/08/2019 13:53

Actually I used to get lots of compliments when I used WonderGlow (CT) but too expensive a habit to keep up!

I missed the DW - I'd knock that on the head tbh. Awful clogging stuff on me.

DameXanaduBramble · 08/08/2019 13:53

I never get the hype about DW, it’s flat and dull. Primer and try something like the YSL touche Eclat bb cream, its a game changer. A coral blusher like the one you use will pop with it. I’m use the hourglass veil powder on the t zone.

BowiesJumper · 08/08/2019 14:03

I used to use DW light and it made me look so dull and flat, so despite the good coverage/staying power I gave it up!

Benefit healthy mix serum foundation (rounded bottle, not the square one which isn't the "serum" foundation) is good.

Also, Clinique healthy glow foundation is my current fave. They do samples so you could try before you buy.

Mac's Hush cream colour base is a nice (peachy coloured) highlighter. I use a bit of glossier cloud paint as a blush, and then hush on the top of my cheeks for extra glow.

I do also like the becca primer people have mentioned, but didn't see a MASSIVE difference for the amount it costs.

Make sure you're moisturising and exfoliating, as skin prep is half the battle.

BowiesJumper · 08/08/2019 14:04

sorry that should say bourjois healthy mix serum foundation, not benefit!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/08/2019 14:05

Healthy Mix Serum is really good and a good price too.

EatenByDinosaurs · 08/08/2019 14:06

Makeup Revolution do some absolutely amazing (and cheap!) highlighters which double as blush. I use the Dragon's Heart Highlighter which when you swirl a brush over all the colours gives an amazing "glowing natural blush" look.

A friend has the Blushing Heart Highlighter which gives the same lit from within glow but is a better shade for her skin. They can look a bit garish in the box, but they aren't at all on.
Plus they last dawn to dawn even without primer or setting spray, and I live in a hot place. They are brilliant Grin
