Can anyone recommend a moisturiser for extremely dry skin?

Even Estee lauder double wear disappears from my skin! I drink gallons of water but it makes no difference. I'm trying to double cleanse at night to see if that helps. I'm 45. I'd ideally like a moisturiser with spf in it. Anyone know of any miracle products? Thanks all

Hi have you tried coconut butter works amazing

If your skin is “drinking” your foundation, could you be dehydrated rather than dry?

If so, I would try adding in a hyaluronic acid serum (personally I love Vichy booster 89) ideally applied onto damp skin. The hyaluronic acid attracts water and holds it in the skin. Then to seal it in and stop the water evaporating away during the day, you need a decent moisturiser on top, and potentially a facial oil too.

To answer your original question, my favourite moisturisers for my dry skin are Eucerin replenishing urea face cream, Clinique moisture surge intense, and Drunk Elephant Lala retro, but there are loads of good options out there.

Oh and if you don’t already acid tone, I would really recommend it. The way I understand it is that if you have a thick layer of dead skin cells on top of your skin, your skincare products will just sit on top of the dead skin. If you exfoliate regularly then the products you use will be able to get to the live skin where they are needed. You could use any acid toner, but lactic acid is generally thought of as best for dry skin.

Spurioser thanks so much for that link, that sounds exactly like my skin! Great advice in the article. What does a facial oil do?

Your advice is amazing thanks so much. Could you give me an idea of a routine I should adopt? I'm rubbish at knowing what order to apply these products.

There is a lot of blurb out there about "nourishment" from facial oils, but I think any nourishment comes from your diet. Facial oil stops hydrating products from evaporating faster. I put my serums on, then a couple of drops of oil (I like rosehip, because it doesn't clog my pores, or affect my make-up) then moisturiser.
My favourite at the moment is Cerave which has hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. If you can get the one with the sunscreen, even better!!! It's non-irritating, inexpensive and contains quality ingredients.

A facial oil is basically another way of moisturising the skin. They can help prevent water loss, and also soften and strengthen the outer layer of the skin. Some of them also have added ingredients like retinol, so have extra benefits.

vaseline works wonders

It’s tricky because skincare is so personal. Caroline Hirons has done a cheat sheet on routines, which is really good for explaining the order you should use products and why, but it’s a really full-on routine with lots of products which probably aren’t all necessary for your particular concerns. In this routine she also does a LOT of acid toning, which for me would be way too much but for some would be totally fine. It’s a good guide for when and why though.

And last post (because I’m totally taking over this thread, sorry!) there is really good long running thread on here all about skincare and ingredients to look out for, which is well worth a peruse if you have the time! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/3607276--Fantastic-Skincare-Shitting-About-All-Day-Discussing-Co-Dictionary

Thanks to everyone for the amazing advice, I think I know where I'm going wrong and how to fix it. Hopefully I stick to a routine now, I'm so lazy at night.

So I was using a few drops of almond oil with my moisturiser but then I read a bit and got this
And this Garnier Moisture Bomb Hydrating Night Cream Moisturiser 50ml https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01A8H4N84/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_2RTpDb4V4W2VE

Clinique moisture surge, there's nothing like it.

Second recommendation if you want something less ££ is the body shop hemp face protector.

I have very dry, very sensitive skin and these two sort it out nicely.

Hello Epionce have a good range of serum and cream to repair and strengthen dry and damaged skin. It is expensive but works. I also use Avon af 33 clinic hydrating cream. I use their clinical af33 serum first. Then cream and their spf 50 repairwear af33 sunscreen. I clean my skin with Argan oil. It is very nourishing. Then a natio repair and care cream mask. Before serum a few drops of Timeless vitamin c 20% plus vit e. My dry skin has vanished. Remember eat a good diet. Vitamins for skin help too like collagen and Biotin plus water to drink. Hope this helps a bit and yes exfoliating I use neutrogena microdermabrasion machine once a week. Good luck. X
