Dress me for a wedding, please!!

Can I have some ideas for an outfit for my ds's wedding, please? What sort of thing should the mother-of-the-groom wear??

The wedding is in Paris, in November at 3pm and afaik, will be quite traditional. The bridesmaids will wear light blue dresses.

I'm 50+yo, 5ft 6in, size 12/14. My hair is reddish brown and eyes dark brown, skin vaguely suntanned. 'Autumn' colours suit me best, blue is a no-no for me. I can't wear stiletto heels but don't mind a bit of height. Also, a titfer is required. And a bag. TIA

titfer = hat?

suedonim · 31/07/2007 20:17

Yes, sorry!

November in Paris?
Weather will be freezing and wet

If trousers will cut it get a trouser suit, if not, suit with skirt, or dress and jacket, or dress and coat. Often easiest to start with the coat then get the underneath bits to match - Coast and [oh no] Boden often good for coats - maybe this with a brown dress underneath. Maybe boots if the chruch will be cold and smart shoes for evening.

Oh, hang on, is it in a chilly church or a swish warm hotel? If the latter ignore all coat-related burble - jkt for ceremony with little dress under for evening dancing.

hats for winter weddings v hard indeed - will a fascinator do?

suedonim · 31/07/2007 20:53

Apparently all weddings are civil ones in France and in any case my future DIL is Muslim so we won't be going to church. There will be a civil ceremony at the town hall then we'll retire to a hotel for the rest of the day. A fascinator would be excellent, then I can have hair as well!

We have Coast here in Aberdeenshire so I'll look there. Am I allowed to wear Boden and still be on MN??

It's all a bit of a scutter as I'm going to have to buy it all by the end of August, then lug everything to Nigeria and then cart it to Paris in November. And I'm supposed to be getting Xmas presents now.

'Getting' as in buying, not receiving!!

Have you a smart winter coat already?
If not then it's still a good place to start as you'll need it between the town hall and the hotel - the brown Boden one would be mroe practical if you're going to wear it as a normal winter coat on other occasions though.
If you have one then I'd build the outfit from under that - if it's a dull colour think of how it could look with coloured bag/shoes/fascinator.
Neither Phase Eight and Hobbs have got their autumn collection online yet (are in store though) but are good for dresses, also Monsoon -in fact you may even bag a bargain in the Monsoon sale.

suedonim · 31/07/2007 21:23

I don't have a decent coat atm as we live in Nigeria so don't need warm clothing. I like that Boden one but it'll be out of fashion by the next time I need to wear it.

You've got me thinking about a trouser suit, though.....

reduced coat worth a look
I like the red flowery one too but am not sure if it's sophisticated enough...

depends on sue's shape - colour is way out though
this is lovely though - good for balancing peary hips.

suedonim · 31/07/2007 21:39

LittleLapin, I love the shape of that coat but hate the sleeves. 3/4 sleeves drive me mad; I either want to push them up out of the way or pull them down to my wrists.

What you've outlined in your description is my vision of how I shall look - I just don't know how to achieve it, lol. We'll be in Paris for a few days beforehand but as we'll be entertaining family and friends I don't really want to have to traipse round shops.

I think the Boden coats are little too..ahem...young for me. I love the Zanzibar outfit and the Misty jacket - I feel a visit to Coast coming on. But do you think it's okay to wear a pale colour when the bride is wearing ivory?

OP posts:
suedonim · 31/07/2007 21:45

Noooo, no Zara. They said we'd be getting one but no show yet.

I was only thinking pale jacket myself - I'd put a browner dress underneath
East? coat third from left?
Jigsaw don't have their autumn stuff online yet.

Oh my, lots of lovely things there, thank you! I really like the Florida suit, also the patterned long jacket.

I'll have to come back to this tomorrow as dd is having a sleepover and I'm hearing loud shrieks followed by long silences.
