Is it ‘normal’ now to have had some kind of work done?

Just back from holiday- family resort- UK focussed, premium hotel/resort- everyone with young kids
I’m not exaggerating when I say probably 25% of women had massive fake boobs- out of proportion to body in style Vic beck early days, and then the reeeeeeally obvious lips- probably 30% again not a little help but think Lesley ash when it all went wrong.
There were then more with more subtle work, and a lot of Botox from scary to v neat,
A mix of ages
But it really got me thinking - we are fortunate, and have holidays a lot over last few years and every trip it’s more and more prevalent in the level of all kinds of ‘work’ visible
In balance also more people of all shapes and sizes just carrying on in bikinis with their kids, but I was just so surprised at how obvious it all was- DH even commented
So is this pretty typical now? Does this fit with your friend group?
I’d say for me I know of a few boob jobs, all bar one pretty subtle, and all bar 1 cosmetic not health.
Lip fillers only 1, pretty massive now...
Botox- growing number...
But actually most, say 90% nothing and pretty certain never would
Just musing really. Am I weird for not seriously considering it when I have some significant hang ups (I’m small but awful skin stretch marks and post operation scar damage to stomachs) I guess I’d just assumed I wasn’t ‘someone who would ever look good like that now.

What do you mean by:

balance also more people of all shapes and sizes just carrying on in bikinis with their kids, but I was just so surprised at how obvious it all was- DH even commented

??

I didn’t want to paint the picture as though it was all perfection, there were other people just getting on with it wearing bikinis as opposed to one pieces too (what I suppose I would call normal- ie no two people the same, many shapes and sizes, whereas the ‘work’ all had a very uniform look)
It’s not a slurr to anyone more just suppose at seemingly how common it seemed and made me wonder why I was held back

And the DH bit was that he noticed people had had work done- he really is a bit non observational about appearance but commented on ‘alot of people have had work’. He is currently a bit self conscious and original conversation was about the changing expectation of ‘dad bods’ and it went from there .

I don't think it's typical. It's certainly becoming more common to get work done and bad work stands out

Sagradafamiliar · 25/07/2019 01:27

I've had a few things done and most people I know have had at least lip fillers. Just in an average, unremarkable town so I don't live a particularly extraordinary lifestyle. But yes that's the norm for us.

WingingWonder · 25/07/2019 06:57

Can I ask - when you got one thing done did you feel happier or did it make next bit look out of place?
I’d really like to have a better stomach, and no exercise can sort that due to scar damage to muscles, but worry if I get a tuck I’ll then just obsess over stretched boobs and then lined face, so I guess it’s a if you good one do end kind of end up doing all?

I think, in general, we are becoming more obsessed with appearance.
In general, people have a better standard of living so whilst a generation or so ago it might have been about having the best car or tech, now it's about the best tits or face. People have more disposable income so spend it on the next big thing.
Or at least that's part of my thoughts on it.
I don't have any opinion really on folk doing as they will to their bodies but I do find it quite sad when very young women mess with themselves when they are beautiful as they are. Each to their own.

Klobluchar · 25/07/2019 07:14

It’s much more mainstream and we can all recognise it much more easily now. Years ago we might have thought someone had great genes or had looked after their skin, now we can recognise they’ve had work done because it takes on a certain look which in itself is currently fashionable

I always think it rarely makes people look younger, just like they have had something done.

TapasForTwo · 25/07/2019 07:17

"I think, in general, we are becoming more obsessed with appearance."

I agree. In today's Instagram/Snapchat obsessed world young people are more obsessed with looks than previous generations.

cheesenpickles · 25/07/2019 07:18

I always swore I'd never get work done but, as I'm getting older, the though of a boob lift pair kids/weight loss is becoming more and more appealing. I'd say I've got a small percentage of friends who have had some work done but the vast majority haven't. I've had cosmetic dental work done and it changed my life so I would say that if it helps someone feel better about themselves and they can afford it then why the hell not?

I know a growing number of mothers in their 40s who have had breast augmentation/lift surgery to deal with post-pregnancy and breastfeeding body changes.

fancynancyclancy · 25/07/2019 07:25

I know a fair few people who had boob jobs in there 20s, we are now in our 30s. I think it was more of thing then as don’t know anyone who wants one now & the big boobs on tiny body isn’t such a desirable look these days. Often see fake boobs on holiday.

Know some colleagues who have botex but they are in their 40s.

I’ve worked with younger women (early 20s) & a few of them have the lip jobs & big eyebrows & some look quite identikit. Personally I don’t like it.

fancynancyclancy · 25/07/2019 07:27

Sometimes I’d like a tummy tuck or boob lift but in reality for the cost, pain, risk & price I don’t think I could be bothered as it’s not really that bad. I probably will try botox at some point.

wheresmymojo · 25/07/2019 07:33

I have one friend who has lip fillers and a boob job, I didn't know her before she had them and have never asked about them.

Other than that I don't know anyone who has anything at all done. I suspect most of them won't ever have anything done. On the other hand I would be tempted by subtle upper lip fillers, Botox and a boob lift after DC (but only if I loose the weight I've gained!).

mintich · 25/07/2019 08:08

I know 4 people who have had boob jobs, 2 veneers, 2 fillers, and 2 lip injections. So quite a few!

puppymouse · 25/07/2019 08:09

I'd say the % of school mums I know that have had work done matches yours. I was a bit taken aback to begin with and one of them does look a little weird when not heavily made up. But they're my friends and if they choose to do that it's their body I guess.

I got my eyebrows microbladed earlier this year and semi perm eyeliner tattoo. I was shitting it as never done anything like that before and it's been such a great decision. I'm on the fence about Botox and fillers.

edgeofheaven · 25/07/2019 08:10

Yikes does this count as work? I've had my eyebrows done too! And absolutely loving them.

namechangerreloaded · 25/07/2019 08:21

Yes, I'm noticing it more and more. It used to be the reserve of older, well off people, but now it seems that all ages and socio-economic groupings are buying into it.

puppymouse · 25/07/2019 08:22

@edgeofheaven I have no idea! Maybe not but it felt like it to me as never done anything like that before Grin

Floisme · 25/07/2019 08:22

I haven't and, vain as I am, I don't see the point. No amount of work can keep up with how a woman's body changes.

I know a couple of women who are obviously having Botox. Like most people, I wouldn't dream of saying anything to them and so they may think that no-one can tell. But we can.

DippyAvocado · 25/07/2019 08:27

most people I know have had at least lip fillers.

Really?? I only know one person that has had lip fillers. Maybe 3 or 4 that have Botox and one person who's had a boob job. These are just colleagues or acquaintances. Of my close friends, nobody has had anything done. All in our 40s.

progestermoan · 25/07/2019 08:28

I think lots of people have stuff done now. I know people who have had Botox fillers and microblading etc
I have been asked where I get my Botox and lips done 🤣🤣 they haven’t been done ! I just look a lot younger as never wear make up, always wear sunscreen and I have out of proportion lips (which I’ve actually always hated, used to get some shitty comments off boys at high school and college). The fact people ask so readily and I know of a few people who have it done within my not very wealthy friendship group means I think that it’s very common now to have ‘work’ done

progestermoan · 25/07/2019 08:30

I watched a video once where a YouTuber went for filler cheek/under eye area🤢 they put a cannula in i couldnt watch all of it. I don’t think I could cope with it and I’m not particularly squeamish it just looked so brutal on such a young face

PinkFlowerFairy · 25/07/2019 08:33

Wow Im glad where I live people arent quite so imgae obsessed. I literally only know one person, she had a boob job and having been completely flat and had some hang ups now looks "normal" rather than unnatural (she looks great!).

I dont holiday in those kind of resorts though, I'd hazard a guess Im less likely to see all that hiking in Wales etc !
