Festival outfit for the elderly

M0RVEN · 19/07/2019 15:59

Last time I went to a festival was 1981 and I’m guessing the styles have moved on since then. Hmm A quick google shows that I need

Distressed Denim shorts half way up my bum
Floral slip dress
Hunter wellies and long socks
A bum bag worn cross body
Designer sunglassses
Parka

Which is a slight problem. Apart from the fact that I’m in my 50s, I normally dress like a Danish architect. Except for weddings when a wear a Danish architect dress in not black.

For smart casual I wear smart casual Danish architect.

I don’t do casual.

I do however have running clothes in hi vis and hill walking clothes in not black but I’m not sure that helps.

The weather forecast is 🌦🌧 and of course its been 🌧🌧this week so the ground will be wet.

Advice please oh wise fashionistas.

If its going to be raining, I'd wear waterproof walking coat, wellies, running leggings tbh all the better to be dry.

thedevilinablackdress · 19/07/2019 16:15

Leggings, boots or wellies, Danish architect dress or tunic you don't mind getting muddy. Rains DK lightweight waterproof. And a cross body bumbag 😁😁 (I love this particular super-practical fashion.)

stucknoue · 19/07/2019 16:20

Waterproofs, hiking trousers, hiking boots are ideal perhaps tunic tops (mountain warehouse have nice ones). Wellies might be a smart idea for toilet trips at night and in case of extreme conditions. If you want to push the fashion a bit, dress and leggings maybe but with that forecast I would buy additional waterproof trousers instead! I like festivals but I dress for the weather so rain means head to toe Berghaus gear!

FauxFox · 19/07/2019 16:30

If you are talking about practicality i have no advice. If you are talking about looking more "festively" I would suggest considering a bright kimono to wear over your black base layer. Glitter face paints are optional Grin

I'm at a festival this weekend, rain forecast for tomorrow. I'm wearing a band t-shirt and jeans, hiking boots, shell jacket ( taking bigger waterproof jacket too just in case). Beanie hat for when the sun goes down and it gets chilly.

FeltCarrot · 19/07/2019 17:18

I’m off to a festival tomorrow too (wonder if it’s the same one!), I’m wearing walking boots and taking a cagoule cape, kelps keep my rucksack dry too!

AuntieStella · 19/07/2019 17:21

50s is not elderly FFS

No probables with going as Danish architect (top half) in neon tights and wellies (lower half)

FusionChefGeoff · 19/07/2019 17:26

No real advice but wanted to commend your writing it really made me smile Smile

Floisme · 19/07/2019 17:32

I was older than you the last time I went to a festival. It was wet and from memory, I wore knee length shorts over leggings, wellies, a couple of T shirts and something waterproof (can't remember what) on top. Not my finest style moment but I find festivals are a bit like going to the football in that absolutely no-one is looking at you plus there are no mirrors (although admittedly lots of photos).

Have a good time. I doubt I will go again myself as I have grown too fond of a flushing toilet plus I'm tired of coming home with yet another pair of Thai Fisherman's trousers.

peridito · 19/07/2019 18:10

could someone let me know me what Danish architects wear?

thedevilinablackdress · 19/07/2019 18:40

Angular things from COS peridito

Ellapaella · 19/07/2019 19:34

I think a long kimono is a great idea. Over jeans or perhaps some wide leg trousers and nice sandals? With a cami top.

Ellapaella · 19/07/2019 19:35

Bit if it's raining just wear jeans, raincoat and wellies because that's what everyone will be wearing Wink

StCharlotte · 19/07/2019 19:52

Can't help as you wouldn't catch me dead at a festival - too fond of my home comforts these days - but your OP did make me chuckle.

Nanna50 · 19/07/2019 20:09

Not jeans they take forever to dry.

Will your hill walking stuff not be ideal? Do you have walking trousers that zip off at the knee, incase it’s really muddy or hot. Wellies and festival poncho that covers everything.

Big sunglasses are a must
You can’t see anyone looking at you
You can’t be recognised on photos
No one can see how sleep deprived you are

RezCowgirl · 19/07/2019 20:21

Wear leggings under a lagenlook dress. Pair of flowery wellies, waterproof and a cross body bag.

No need to blend in with the beige crowd just cos you're at a festival.

peridito · 19/07/2019 20:42

thedevilinablackdress ah I see ! Have googled COS ,v.nice !

Thank you!

RosaWaiting · 19/07/2019 20:58

I don’t know what the architect look is either!

M0RVEN · 19/07/2019 22:12

Sorry to post and run earlier. Many thanks everyone for the excellent suggestions.

Re the Danish Architect thing - It’s just a shorthand way of describing very minimalist structured clothing, often monochrome and with unconventional cuts, shapes or fabrics.

As Pp said, typified by Cos and other Scandi brands.

I wanted to explain why I didn’t have many (any? ) of the clothes items that seem to be standard festival wear eg floaty mini dresses , denim jacket, parka, cowboy boots .

I don’t even own a bum bag 😢😭😱 —nor do I ever intend to—

Danish architect is cool. You’ll look great being yourself.

RosaWaiting · 19/07/2019 22:23

Well I’m loving Danish architect!

Pipandmum · 19/07/2019 22:29

@FauxFox where are those kimonos from? I like!
OP when you said elderly I was thinking 70s or 80s. I’m 57 and certainly not elderly! Your description of what you used to wear would be perfectly acceptable now - festival outfits seem to be stuck in the flower power days.
But anything casual would do that you don’t mind getting muddy and smelly.

MaraScottie · 19/07/2019 22:34

Loved your post OP :)

babysharkah · 19/07/2019 22:56

Dress like a danish architect, with wellies and glitter:)

babysharkah · 19/07/2019 22:57

If you are actually elderly have a look at Baddie Winkle on insta, she is awesome.
