Festival outfit for the elderly

Last time I went to a festival was 1981 and I’m guessing the styles have moved on since then. Hmm A quick google shows that I need

Distressed Denim shorts half way up my bum
Floral slip dress
Hunter wellies and long socks
A bum bag worn cross body
Designer sunglassses
Parka

Which is a slight problem. Apart from the fact that I’m in my 50s, I normally dress like a Danish architect. Except for weddings when a wear a Danish architect dress in not black.

For smart casual I wear smart casual Danish architect.

I don’t do casual.

I do however have running clothes in hi vis and hill walking clothes in not black but I’m not sure that helps.

The weather forecast is 🌦🌧 and of course its been 🌧🌧this week so the ground will be wet.

Advice please oh wise fashionistas.

And in other good news, we now have yellow weather warnings of heavy rain and thunderstorms Shock . So the usual British summer. As the BBC announced cheerfully:

Heavy showers and thunderstorms will bring difficult travelling conditions and localised flooding.

  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Delays to train services are possible
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is likely
  • Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
  • Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures

FauxFox · 20/07/2019 07:09

@Pipandmum they are from ASOS 😊

LunaTheCat · 20/07/2019 08:55

I am fascinated! I love the sound of “Danish Architect” style!
Where do you buy? I am guessing Cos, Kin by John Lewis?
Give us hints!!
Ps enjoy the festival!

BoogleMcGroogle · 20/07/2019 09:01

I get what you mean by Danish Architect and reckon it lends itself quite well thought festival dressing, given the key is layering. I'm off to WOMAD next week and for the three days, plan to take three plain, unfitted, short sleeve dresses. As it cools down, these get layered up with a cardi or merino sweater and leggings/socks. I have a plain Panama hat and a pair of really soft hush puppies which I only wear at festivals. They are chunky Mary Jane pumps, so work with bare feet, but also with leggings and socks.

It's a bit formulaic, but that approach works for me. My ten year old can't wait to sport her ( fluro) print dress her best friend brought back from Nigeria for her. She'll be bright enough for the whole family!

starzig · 20/07/2019 09:13

Denim shorts (but not quite up bum), band t shirt, wellies, sunglasses, hoodie and poncho (rain kind) or foldaway raincoat. Bumbag fine too. Some venues won't allow rucksack bigger than A4.

GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies · 20/07/2019 09:21

I wish I was cool enough to dress like a Danish Architect; my style is more deranged hippie goth bag lady.

It depends very much on the festival. If it's family-friendly one with a children's field and a healing tent, Danish Architect with added kagool and a folding chair will be fine.

M0RVEN · 20/07/2019 11:42

Many thanks for all the suggestions, I am suitably clad in ( from bottom to top)

Own wellies or hiking boots ( depending on the depth of the mud). Boots are black ( natch ) and wellies are poo coloured and not sparkly but they will have to do.

DS long black hockey socks ( hiking ones are too warm and not black )

Own Black running tights

Black and red leopard print mini skirt ( get me ) stolen from teenaged DD

Dd cropped T shirts ( various colours ) with my own black running tank underneath

If cold - hoodie borrowed from teenaged son ( because I don’t own such a thing as a hoodie and his is an an uncool and unbranded one so he can’t possibly wear it anymore)

If wet - own black hiking waterproof jacket
If very wet - own not black waterproof coat
If cold - Dh beanie hat
If hot - Dh bucket hat ( who knew they were cool now ? )

Own sunglasses
Own cross body bag and small daysack

I had discounted even looking in teenaged DDs wardrobe because

  1. She’s 19 and I’m 50 something
  1. She’s a different size, taller and dresses either like @GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies (deranged hippie bag lady) , a sex worker or in gym clothes.
  1. She would die of embarrassment if she knew and anyway would probably refuse if I asked. However she’s on holiday so doesn’t know and I can’t ask Grin

So once I worked out ( thanks to you ladies ) that I could wear my running stuff underneath ( for warmth and to suck in the middle aged flab) and my hiking gear on top ( for the rain ) I was sorted.

And because DD is taller and bigger, things that are skin tight and micro short on her are loose fit and longer on me. So her skirt that goes half way up her bum is mid thigh on me. And her cropped T shirts are loose and come nearly to my waist and the running tank underneath covers any gap.

@LunaTheCat you are spot on with Cos and Kin. Also uniqlo and online from the Japanese equivalent of Amazon

@Floisme - I am shocked, shocked to the core of my being to hear that you own a pair of Thai fisherman’s trousers Grin. I had you marked down as another Cos lover and now my world is shattered.

@GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies you are spot on with the children’s field and healing tent. Plus craft tent, knitters corner, clowning workshops and yoga for kids.

Oh I have several M0RVEN. I've probably still got a belly dancing top somewhere too. Festivals do that to me. It's like at Christmas when suddenly that sparkly jumper looks like the height of good taste (even though you've already got 9) and a week later you wonder what in hell you were thinking.

The rest of the year I am (mostly) a Cos disciple.

Enjoy - and don't forget to go shopping and surrender to the shiny.

M0RVEN · 20/07/2019 12:28

Funny you mention shiny.....I found a shiny black mesh dress In DDs wardrobe, which I seriously considered wearing as a t shirt with my black running tank underneath and her black and red leopard print skirt on top.

You might think that I decided against it for fear of looking like a fool. But no, I was just scared in case I damaged the mesh dress 😳

Your selection sounds perfect. And all that borrowing, very sustainable 😁

StCharlotte · 20/07/2019 13:30

I quite like the Danish architect look, except I need more colour in my life. Also, if this is the Danish architect look, with those hems should I be worried about Danish buildings?

I think what you really need MORVEN are some elf ears. Or wings.

youllhavehadyourtea · 20/07/2019 14:21

... and online from the Japanese equivalent of Amazon

this sounds very interesting. Can you link?

HollowTalk · 20/07/2019 14:41

I love that Danish architect look!

LunaTheCat · 21/07/2019 03:49

I like the label “Danish Architect”. A few months ago there was a thread about looking like “ An off duty ballerina” - I loved that concept too.
Morven you should check out a New Zealand brand called Kowtow - can also buy in UK. Ethically sourced materials, architectural and structured shapes - and pockets!

echt · 21/07/2019 04:54

50s is when I started going to festivals. You are not elderly.

I've haven't anything useful to add to the many excellent suggestions as it is usually very warm indeed during the day at the Victorian festivals I go to, though the Aussie climate can pull a fast one at times.

Oh, sun hat. ☀️

M0RVEN · 21/07/2019 17:25

Ha ha! It’s 16 degrees and pouring with rain. I’m wearing all my clothes at once. Except the sun hat and sandals of course.

OP posts:
peridito · 22/07/2019 13:50

oh no ...! personally I'd be inclined to add the bucket sun hat over the beanie for extra warmth and directing the rain off my face .

Just think how lovely getting home will be !

Oldraver · 22/07/2019 19:16

I'm 54 and going to a festival ish of sorts this week.

I have bought a new bumbag but will be wearing it as it is not the new fandangled across the body hopefully to cover up my tummy
