I've heard tell of period swimsuits. Anyone know?

They're for my DD who is a swimmer - early morning training etc and can't really miss a week per month from training. She has just had her second period and doesn't have the hang of tampons yet. Her friend mentioned period swimwear. A quick google brought up stateside stuff which I'd rather not, with returns and sizing etc.

Does anyone know if there is a UK/Euroland company selling these?
TIA

I use modibodi period pants and believe there is a swimsuit they make?

ChicCroissant · 19/07/2019 14:46

Way too expensive, although it's a good idea.

championquartz · 19/07/2019 14:48

Oh thank you. Had a quick look. It's expensive!!.

I didn't expect they'd be quite that expensive! Is there anything cheaper? I had hoped I'd get something for

X-post pejoratively

That’s a seriously unflattering £100 swimsuit. The poor model could look so much better in something better cut.

I do wonder how effective a period swimsuit would be for swim training though. It seems like the sort of thing that might work for beach wear, but not spending 2 hours in the water doing drills.

Does her coach have any advice? It, possibly a female member of the coaching team (if the coach is not a woman) might have better advice.

championquartz · 19/07/2019 15:00

Her coach is early 20s man, but there are others. I will ask. I suspect they will advise get the hang of tampons and hurry on!

There are swimsuits for incontinence that say in the ad that also prevent period leaks

All the styles are rather twee for a teenager IMHO but they're a bit more of a reasonable price than the modibodi at least

WooMaWang · 19/07/2019 15:05

He probably won’t be the best source of advice then 😂. Or someone she probably wants to discuss her periods with.

DS’s coach is a woman and lots of the girls are of starting puberty age in her squads, so I assume she’s a source of more useful advice to them and their parents.

The head coach in DS’s club is interested in doing more to support girls through and after puberty. But it is going to be tricky, as I can’t imagine myself wanting to talk to the male coaches about periods even now, never mind at 13 when I started them.

babysharkah · 19/07/2019 15:05

That was exactly the advice I was given about 30 years ago and swimming competitively @championquartz

I don't think that swimsuit looks great for proper training either.

You'd think there would be a better solution by now, perhaps those swimsuits are the start of it.

pejorativelyspeaking · 19/07/2019 15:06

Yeah horrendously expensive!

OhNoooNotAgain · 19/07/2019 15:07

An option instead of a swimsuit www.modibodi.co.uk/collections/all/products/swimwear-bikin?variant=20478331584566

I can vouch for modibodi, the products are brilliant and delivery was perfect- whereas the only other UK company i tried were a nightmare- and not cheaper.

andadietcoke · 19/07/2019 15:08

DN struggled with tampons for swimming and her mum imported a particular slim type of Tampax from the US as they're not available here. She's able to use those.

OhNoooNotAgain · 19/07/2019 15:09

The other things she can try are cups or these Intimina Ziggy Cup - Extra-Thin Reusable Menstrual Cup with Flat-fit Design https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B079JYJBF2/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_f8CmDb74C0G2F are brilliant

oreosoreosoreos · 19/07/2019 15:10

I've got the modi bodi swimwear bottoms and just bought a cheap top to go with it. Don't know if it fits the bill training wise, but they've worked really well for me on hols, I'd recommend them to anyone!

It's worth signing up to their mailing list, they do send out offered fairly regularly

championquartz · 19/07/2019 15:11

Thansk miri. That's a great price. Unfortunately I think I would have some difficulty selling it to her. It doesn't shout 'serious swimmer' with the frills and bits.
But thank you.

championquartz · 19/07/2019 15:18

Oh lots more responses!

Thank you all. Bottoms and tops aren't really a proper option but might do until she gets the hang. I don't think the Ziigy cup is an option for her. Unfortunately between accepting this is a monthly event, and terrible cramps, at the moment it looks like it'll be a while beore any tampon/cup will be an option. Altho I know they get on with it, like we all did, faster than I probably expect.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/swimmerpro.com/swimming-on-period/amp/This is quite an interesting article with some advice for competitive swimmers.

Fallofrain · 19/07/2019 15:22

I would be conscious that a lot are for light period, i wouldnt have been able to use them for the first half of my periods. Especially if its strenuous exercise!

championquartz · 19/07/2019 15:45

This is the company i first came across. Still expensive but not as expensive as modibodi. I'm reluctant at that price. They look ok though.

thanks for the article link. I'll pass it on to DD.

Fallofrain · 19/07/2019 22:45

The one you've posted says about using it in conjunction with tampons etc. Alot of them arent especially absorbant :(

Skyejuly · 20/07/2019 06:55

What about modibodi bikini pants under the swimsuit?

OhNoooNotAgain · 20/07/2019 11:29

I use modibodi with very heavy bleeding, no tampons etc and have zero leakage. The brand I would avoid are flux. They are uk but the customer service is horrific.

I would use the swimming bottoms underneath a normal suit, no one will know they're there and it won't be obvious that it's a different suit on those days x

Madcats · 09/08/2019 15:39

Just wondering what is working for mini @championquartz.

I am just about to buy every type of mini tampon the local Boots stock and hope DD is blessed with light periods.

I've used mooncups for years, so this is going to be 'interesting'.

championquartz · 09/08/2019 16:09

THanks!
I had forgotten about this thread and it didn't come up in my 'threads I'm on' (why??) and I am a regular but intermittent visitor here.

But we haven't done anything - we've had a few weeks period free and there's a bit of out of site out of mind going on. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm going to try the period swimpants under the suit. Sounds like the best idea. And cheapest.

I had hoped DD would have light periods but they aren't, -according to her they are horrific (and she is completely surprised/agog/baffled, and frequently tells us, by how women are so accepting of this serious event that happens every single month for 40 years Grin ). They're not horrific but they are not light.

Will keep you posted.
