Someone reassure me this is an excellent plan (hair related)

I have long (mid back), thick hair. And I am hot and bothered and don’t seem to have time to get it washed and dried every day.

I also have a two month old (this the lack of time for grooming). There is no chance Sir-Screams-A-Lot (my new tiny dictator) will be giving me the time away from feeding for a proper haircut.

Please reassure me if I chop it myself with decent scissors, say to my shoulders, it will look fine and be much easier to manage (or at least quicker to dry if not actually style).

DONT DO IT! Find a mobile hairdresser

Expressedways · 16/07/2019 19:15

No no no!!! A cut at a salon doesn’t take long, particularly if you skip the blow dry at the end. Can your partner not look after your baby for an hour? If your baby doesn’t take a bottle then they could even come with and install themselves at a coffee shop near the hairdressers so can you can feed right before and right afterwards. Or failing that, google for a mobile hairdresser. Anything is better than attempting to do it yourself.

managedmis · 16/07/2019 20:21

Yeah, don't do that

OvalCanvas · 16/07/2019 20:24

Step away from the scissors.

GemmeFatale · 16/07/2019 20:49

I’m sensing my plan isn’t the best option.

I will find a hairdresser and emphasise the need for speed. They just seem to faff for so long

Thank you all for backing me away from the DIY hack option

Destinesia · 17/07/2019 11:42

I'd make sure it's still long enough to tie back, you'll be the victim of the hair pulling stage soon...

Anois · 17/07/2019 11:58

Maybe call in for a consultation so the stylist can see how you hair lies etc. Book the cut then and go in with you hair already washed to save time.

LarryDuff · 17/07/2019 12:25

Ignore these cowards (joke), I say go for it. I have similar hair to you and I managed a decent cut on my own using a technique from youtube. It basically involves tying your hair on top of your head with a bobble, tipping your head upside down and cutting across at the desired length. Nailed it first time. I just hate going to the salon, it's painful, the chat and the cost is unbearable.

StCharlotte · 17/07/2019 12:56

I've done it myself successfully a few times (including long to short) but, if you're the sort who worries about washing and drying their hair every day, you're probably better off not DIYing in case it goes wrong and you'd be devastated. Apologies if I've read you wrong Grin

You can go to one of those walk-in salons where they can do a cut in no minutes flat (no drying) while your DP/DH guards Young Sir in a nearby coffee shop maybe?

GemmeFatale · 17/07/2019 14:43

See now I’m tempted all over again. Grin

I often trim the length myself. Might google this ponytail chop option.

You need the mumsnet haircut. You tie it in a high point tail and snip the bottom off

happyjack12 · 17/07/2019 19:13

google the "mumsnet haircut " !! its fab :)

Lellochip · 17/07/2019 19:17

I did the ponytail haircut a few times. It worked great... Until it didn't 😅

Wavingwhiledrowning · 17/07/2019 19:18

I was going to suggest exactly the same technique as LarryDuff. I did that after I had DS1 and just couldn't get to a salon. It actually turned out pretty well, and got me through summer etc until I could get it done properly. Have a look on YouTube - there are loads of tutorials.

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2019 21:39

Don't do it.
Go to a hairdresser or tie it back or up.
Unless you have to, don't wash it every day. Cantu do a refresh spray, or if you get on with it there's dry shampoo, or you can use a little bit of water or nothing.
If you must cut it yourself cut a lot less than you want to, so that if you have to, you can get it neatened.

crazycatbaby · 17/07/2019 21:54

Do it and post a pic Grinps I'm a hairdresser

RosaWaiting · 17/07/2019 22:03

Um
I cut my own hair
Mum or sis tidy it up if I miss anything
Just past shoulders with a bit of a layer in front, it’s wavy/curly.

It’s fine, I’ve had a couple of people ask me for local hairdresser suggestions.

I totally get that you don’t want to faff in a hairdresser, do you have one of those £10 dry cut places near you? I do occasionally go there. Or you could get a person in to cut your hair at home, I don’t think they faff for hours.

RosaWaiting · 17/07/2019 22:04

Larry “I just hate going to the salon, it's painful, the chat and the cost is unbearable”

So much this!

EatenByDinosaurs · 18/07/2019 11:42

Do it!! Definitely do it!!! YOLO. Grin

I cut mine, have done for years ever since I decided to avoid the v v gossipy and racist hairdresser who was the only one within sensible distance of the base. I do NOT miss living in military housing.

It turned out much better and so I kept it up, I add layers too, and mine is chin length.

Just make sure its still long enough to tie back in case it doesn't go to plan Grin

EatenByDinosaurs · 18/07/2019 11:45

I also bleach mine and do my own balayage, as pp have said YouTube is great and if you aren't going to be devastated if it doesn't turn out as expected, why not? Smile

Tartyflette · 18/07/2019 11:51

A few years back there was a lot of chat on here about The Mumsnet Haircut.
AFAICR it worked for some people....

Tartyflette · 18/07/2019 11:53

Shit, don't know what went wrong there.

GemmeFatale · 21/07/2019 18:54

I’m sure you’re all desperate to know the outcome.

I’m now sporting a new ‘do, its about six inches shorter.

I didn’t do it myself. I made DH do it so I had someone to blame if it went wrong. Grin

And it actually looks fine. Miles better than before. Possibly not as good as an actual stylist would do but as it’s tied back most of the time it’s perfectly ok.
