Can you look glam on holiday??

hopeishere · 16/07/2019 16:49

I think it's impossible to look glam on holiday. I'm just back from one and everyone in the airport looked knackered and scruffy!!

My main issues are:
Hair - never looks good due to pool / humidity / shite hotel hairdryer
Skin - shiny due to factor 50 plus no point in putting make up on top of it; also see above re pool!
Clothes - I see myself wafting in sundresses but I'm too fat and just look all wobbly, hot and bothered. I brought too much away with me and then didn't get dressed up anyway.

Also I'm blue-white and burn very easily so I get stressed about applying suncream to the edges of what I'm wearing so I don't end up burnt round the edges. Maybe I should get a spray tan!!

If anyone does look glam on holiday come and share your tips!!

I get my eyebrows and eyelashes tinted so it looks like I'm wearing mascara even though I'm not.
Hair I wear up in a scruffy bun, with sunglasses perched on the top of my head.
Spray factor 50 rather than the thick white cream is much lighter on your skin, and helps make sure you don't miss any edges.
Earrings and an anklet.

Clothes, I take the opportunity to wear long wafty maxi dresses and skirts (cover up any red and white bits)

I do know people that have a spray tan before they go too.

hopeishere · 16/07/2019 17:52

Eyelash tint is a good idea!

Is there a particular sun cream you think is good? I use la Roche Posay stuff - I think they do a spray.

My hair isn't long enough for a messy bun unfortunately!

Have you tried one of the Asian beauty brand suncreams for your face?
I use Canmake Mermaid Gel, it's fantastic, doesn't dry my skin out, work brilliantly as a makeup primer for hot and humid conditions, doesn't clog my skin and gives a great glowy (but not shiny) look on its own. It's pretty cheap on Amazon too.

Another one a lot of people swear by is Biore suncream. Asian suncream are light years ahead of western ones, I stick to them now and am happily grease free.

God i'm such a slattern for not caring how I look on holiday. My hair is a permanent state.

Unburnished · 16/07/2019 18:09

Ah, where to begin,

First, rinse your hair with Evian after washing/conditioning. Take your own dryer & heat defence spray. Wear gel sunscreen. Get a spray tan. Dye your brows & lashes. Use waterproof make up if you need to. Get shellac on your nails. Carry a handheld electric fan.

EatenByDinosaurs · 16/07/2019 18:11

Hair - I run a smidge of argan oil through it in the mornings and then tie it back and spray or gel it smooth. For me that's the only thing which keeps it tamed.
If I'm going in water rather than sightseeing I style my hair slightly differently, hard to describe but I have an off centre parting, and I brush the top two inches straight back, ignoring the parting, and just tie the rest as usual. I then use two hair grips to keep the top strip running straight back across my head and down to my ponytail. That keeps it tidy and out of my face even if I'm scuba diving.

I never use hair dryers, so can't help there I'm afraid, when we get back I just shower, leave the conditioner (I love the L'Oreal Extraordinary Oil one) on for a few minutes, towel dry, more argan oil, leave in conditioner, tie back up and ready to go again.

I have hair just past my chin and I never have it down on holiday, can't stand hair in/around my face in hot conditions Confused

fancynancyclancy · 16/07/2019 18:13

I don’t do this for every holiday because i’m too lazy but the below helps.

Eyebrow tint & eyelash extensions. I don’t wear foundation anyway but the above means I just use bronzer during the day. Add some eyeshadow (crayon one) & blusher for evening.
I don’t bother with manicures but get a pedicure & sometimes the long lasting nail polish (can’t remember the name).
During the day I just use UV protection spray & plait my hair. At night wash it & let it dry naturally (but do this anyway at home).
No jewellery at the beach except whatever studs I have in.
I like Piz buin & L’oréal sun cream. If you can get a base tan before you go it helps.

HeyMicky · 16/07/2019 18:15

Giant sunglasses and hair band/scarf/turban. Giant hat. Flattering supportive swimsuit. Mattifying sunscreen on your face. Waterproof mascara, bit of lipgloss. Pedicure.

Littlechocola · 16/07/2019 18:16

Big Sunglasses hide lots!
Eyelash and eyebrow tint.
Spray tan before holiday.
I never use hairdryers and go for the beach waves unstyled look.
Lose/light clothes or bikini most of the time!

fancynancyclancy · 16/07/2019 18:16

I have a clarins sun cream stick that I use on my face all the time to avoid the red face look.

hopeishere · 16/07/2019 18:19

I generally do take my own dryer as I've very thick hair but didn't this time and the hotel one was crap!! I managed to set off the smoke alarm twice using it and my Babyliss big hair!!

I do have gel toes done and clarins tanning drops on my face. I don't need my eyebrows tinted they're already really dark.

I'll investigate some of the products mentioned!

Eyelash tint.
Biore sunscreen + primer to look matte
Big sunglasses
Flat gold sandals
Maxi dresses (Warehouse spotlight on eBay really good) for going out in the evenings
Lots of sunscreen - much much better to look pale than burnt.

Tableclothing · 16/07/2019 18:20

Oh, and hair up, pretty much all the time.

fancynancyclancy · 16/07/2019 18:27

At the beach/pool I wear nice kaftan style cover ups for lunch, avoiding the sun etc & just wear some plain slim black flip flops on my feet.
At night I stick to flat sandals (K Jacques & Ancient Greek sandals have good smarter options) & wear dresses or top & trousers that tend to be fairly loose.

EatenByDinosaurs · 16/07/2019 18:32

If your eyebrows are dark, brushing them and then running some waterproof eyebrow gel through them would make a huge difference, if you don't do it already.
I was shocked about how much difference it made at making me look more groomed.

EatenByDinosaurs · 16/07/2019 18:33

The clear gel that is, not the tinted stuff.

EatenByDinosaurs · 16/07/2019 18:37

Oh yes, and a huge one is looking chilled, happy, relaxed, in control and unphased by everything all the time.
Looking flustered, or hot and bothered instantly kills the glam Grin

Bananallama858 · 16/07/2019 18:43

I enjoying ‘dressing up’ whilst on holiday and the prep that goes with it beforehand... gels (hands & toes, lash extensions, waxed and I apply gradual tan a week or so before, every night. Hair is normally slicked back in a top knot or pony. Sometimes will plait my hair so in the evening I get a nice beach-wavy look. I like to accessories with bright colours on holiday too (earrings, headscarves etc).

HollyIngests · 16/07/2019 18:55

Sounds like an interesting holiday Grin.

My hair is naturally curly and frizz-prone in humidity so a relaxing treatment or similar works wonders and is so much easier to straighten.

Lashes are naturally dark but body isn't ! So I have a couple of sun beds first to prep my blue Irish skin. Probably not recommended.

Tryingtogetitright · 16/07/2019 20:40

I try to put my first layer of suncream on first thing before I'm dressed so I know I've coated all the bits under straps etc that are easy to miss and stop me getting suncream all over my clothes. I never look chic though - my hair lets me down!

managedmis · 16/07/2019 21:19

These are my problems since the weather has been hot.

Best to put hair up, where loose, light clothing and comfy shoes. I always wear foundation, even over suncscreen. Best really to avoid the sun between 11-3pm.

Feel so much better in Autumn!

CountFosco · 16/07/2019 23:05

I don't colour anything and I am very pale. I have very short hair which helps me keep cool and is easy in the heat and love big sunglasses. I give in to the shiny sunblock look because it's still so much better than being sunburnt.

Just cover yourself up, you always look better with less skin on show so e.g. if I'm wearing shorts I always wear a long sleeved top (e.g. broderie anglais plus a nude bra), or I wear a midi skirt or dress with short sleeves. I have very pale skin so like my shoulders covered so at minimum have cap sleeves and really prefer a shirt dress. Always wear cotton or a cotton-linen mix, and I like to stick to blues and whites which psychologically make me feel cooler.

CakeNinja · 16/07/2019 23:38

Definitely possible but I cannot be arsed and just don’t give a shit!
I’m on holiday - I spend every work day dealing with my wavy mop, smoothing out creases on my face and generally preening to make myself look professional. I do quite enjoy it and feel groomed and put together.
But my god it takes time, particularly the hair, and as I go on holiday with my 3 pool and beach loving dc there’s literally no point in making the effort!
It’s so liberating Grin

SheWoreRedVelvet · 17/07/2019 12:30

We fly on holiday in 3 weeks. Just before we go I am booked in for eyelash tint & perm, holiday wax and a pedicure.

I use Dove gradual sun tint moisturiser every day anyway, so always have lightly tanned skinned.

I use Biore Watery Essence spf 50 on my face which is incredibly light weight, and doesn't interfer with any make up.

As my lashes will already be sorted, the only actual cosmetics I will wear during the day will be a tinted lip balm (I like the Vaseline Rose) and I will shade and shape my eyebrows in with Benefit Ka-Brow (which is sweat proof), I never put my face in the pool water. Evenings I use the Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Eyeliner, a light dusting of Hoola Bronzer (as I never allow my face to tan, so don't want brown body and pale face), and a brighter lipstick.

Clothes wise my figure is still okay but tends to wobble a bit, so I swan around the pool area in bikinis, various matching kaftans (heavily fringed ones look the most glamorous), sparkly flip flops and huge sunglasses. If I'm sight seeing, I wear loose black Bardot mini dresses, Ancient Greek tan leather sandals, huge sunnies and a straw hat with large brim.

Evenings, I have lots of pretty, floaty dresses by St Tropez which I wear with glittery sandals.

StCharlotte · 17/07/2019 13:07

I think you can.

The only pre-holiday stuff I do is a haircut, a pedicure (I do my own manicures) and an eyebrow thread or wax.

I don't give a stuff how I look in the day time except I will have sunnies and a lovely big straw hat. Although I'll wear lipstick. If sightseeing somewhere hot, I always wear shorts rather than dresses so as to prevent chub rub. Full sun cream application before getting dresses (I use the Ambre Solaire Dry Mist which is far less messy.

In the evening, I just shower, dry my (shortish) hair quickly and do eyes and lips as normal. Sunnies on top of head as a "hairband" Wink Ta-daa! The warm glow you've picked up during the day is a great substitute for a face-full of slap on holiday. I have a couple of light dresses I'd wear or cropped trousers and a glam top with glittery flat sandals.
