Cutting off all your long hair pixie short, if you have done it was it a good or bad decision?

For nearly 2 years I have been constantly saying that I would love to have my hair cut pixie short. Currently it is all one length below my shoulders, quite fine and poker straight. The sort of look I keep coming back to is the blonde crop that Michelle Williams had at the Oscars last year, I just love the shape and style. I just think that the look is so sassy and stylish and as I am small and petite I really feel the look will suit me. I was unsure about it being a bit limited in style but my hairdresser feels that I can wear it naturally flat generally during the day but jazz it up a bit with product for going out at night. She feels totally confidant that once I am used to it I will adore it but more importantly the look will suit me and my features.
Have any of you been through this dilemma, and if you did how have you felt after you went short?

I've got the 'Michelle'. Only have to wash it, blast it dry then rub some wax through and it's done for the day. Always looks fresh and never greasy or bedraggled. I'm 45 and love it (if other people don't, that's their issue and they need to get out more). Go for it!

I’ve done it twice and wouldn’t do it again, bra strap length hair to a very short crop.
It looks great as long as you have regular trims and have time to wash and style it every morning. I used to wake up with it sticking up in all directions.
Growing it out is an absolute nightmare.
I find it easier to have long hair.

GrapefruitIsGross · 15/07/2019 09:37

I did it when I was 21 and kept it for 5 years.

I loved it- quick blast with the hairdryer after a shower, three mins with the straighteners and it was done. You need regular trims, but even those were quick.

Im trying to shift the baby weight so I can get it cut again- it definitely suited size 10 Grapefruit much more than a size 14 Grapefruit 😂😂😂

I did it when I was your age. I went to a really posh hairdresser as a 'I've finished university and have grown up' way marker. It was a great idea! It'll be back to your shoulders before you're 25 if you hate it. And it looks more interesting on a young woman because the obsession with long swishy hair will really make you stand out and look cool. It's a bit less out of the ordinary on a 50 year old!

I certainly needs more upkeep than long hair, but I think that makes you look smarter and more chic. You can't just fall back on a messy bun, so you have to bother. You can also experiment with colour and styling more because it's much lower risk.

I had my long cut off at 36, I am now 49, short pixie cut. You need a good hairdresser who can cut short hair, (a lot cannot get it right) it does not take loads of fussing in the morning, if it is sticking up, I just wet it, it dries in about 3 minutes, put some volumising powder through it and style with my fingers and that is it, I am ready.

gingersausage · 15/07/2019 10:50

I’m not sure why people always think the only option for short hair is a pixie cut.

I went from mid back length mousy brown, to shaved back, short sides, longer on top (sort of like P!nk) platinum blonde in one go, and I was over 40! I absolutely loved it but it needed so much maintenance, like every couple of weeks to keep it in shape. Long hair just requires the odd trim and shoving in a ponytail.

My hair grows quickly and it’s shoulder length now and I’m itching for a short cut again. It’s so much nicer not to have a sweaty neck in the summer.

Go for it. Get a good consultation first from a decent hair salon.

Hair grows. If you don’t like it, it’s not the end of the world.

I am a 63 year old Mum and Nan. I love my really short shaved at back and sides pixie. Like it left longer on top as can either sleek it or go a bit curly. Easy to manage, minutes to dry. Just get the RIGHT hairdresser who knows your hair. Essentially you need make up to make it POP ! And great to experiment with hair colours as doesnt damage hair as cut so regularly. Hope you take the plunge.

I typed another post before this but it didn't work. Never mind. I love having short hair! It's lovely and easy to manage and I feel so much fresher now.

needlessbanana · 16/07/2019 12:23

I've done it twice, once when I was at uni and then second time after my wedding (grew my hair long for the wedding). Both times I absolutely loved it straight away. Still have my pixie cut now, current benefit is that I'm not too aware of my postpartum hair loss.

Both times the hairdressers were asking 100 times whether I was sure. Guess they were scared I'd throw a tantrum once the cut was done. :D

SuperPixie247 · 16/07/2019 12:32

Bloody hell @ToastyFingers you are absolutely stunning!

ToastyFingers · 16/07/2019 12:38

Awhh superpixie247 that's very sweet, it's just a flattering photo though I think. I scrub up all right but tend to favour comfy jumpers and boots most days. I'm very aware of all my grey hairs now too, I've decided to take some time off from dyeing it, as it really was in awful condition before.

OvalCanvas · 16/07/2019 12:51

I too crave a shorter cut op. I have a blunt jaw length bob with an undercut (just at the back). I find that due to my hair being wavy and unpredictable, it takes more styling the shorter it is.

I think the suitability of a shorter cut depends on your hair type and the amount of effort you're prepared to put in if your hair doesn't behave well. If you expect to simply run some styling products through then walk out of the door every morning I'd probably give it a miss.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 16/07/2019 12:59

I’ve posted on similar threads before, I’ve had a pixie multiple times. I grow my hair out then chop it all off again all the time. Currently growing out my pixie again and it’s at the awful mullet stage which requires
100 Kirby grips to make it look even remotely reasonable. I have an appointment next week for a trim and will need to bite my tongue to stop me asking for it all chopped off!

So yes, I adore a pixie, I get bored though hence the growing out. I also get annoyed with the constant trims and when it doesnt sit right some days, I miss being able to chuck it in a bobble to go out too.

Sammi38 · 16/07/2019 14:10

I had a Michelle Williams hair cut, not the pixie one, the one that is slightly longer that’s tucked behind the ears. It’s ok. Growing it out at the moment. Styling can be a pain, at least if it’s long you can shove your hair in a ponytail if you don’t have time to style it.

SpeckledyHen · 16/07/2019 14:31

Do it . It will grow back like mine did when I made the mistake at 38 :) I forgot that I wasn't 15 anymore.

Pipandmum · 16/07/2019 14:41

If you do go for it and you are cutting 6” or more please consider donating your hair to Little Princess Trust. They make wigs for kids who have lost their hair for whatever reason. Read the guidelines to how they want the hair (plaited and tied, not loose) and how long.

BillywigSting · 16/07/2019 14:42

I've done it twice, once in my late teens and once in my mid 20s (I'm late 20s now) not regretted it for a second.

I've only ever done it when I have been at a weight that I am comfortable at though, because I have a moon face when I am heavier, but quite an elfin one otherwise, pointy chin and defined jawline, heart shaped face, small mouth, big eyes etc so I don't find it too difficult to pull it off.

It's much much much less maintenance and effort when it's long though. Doesn't need washing as often or styling nearly as much. I've had the same braid in my hair now for two and a half days, twisted it into a loose messy bun today but other than that haven't had to think about it since Saturday night. It hasn't been cut for weeks. I haven't needed to blow dry it for months.

Does take a while to wash though because I have tons of fine hair that takes an age to rinse

BillywigSting · 16/07/2019 14:44

X post with @Pipandmum

Little Princess trust are great, they've had four of my ponytails now

NoTheresa · 16/07/2019 14:48

Do. Not. Do. This.

JoyceDivision · 16/07/2019 14:55

NoTheresa get off that fence 😂

Iamblossom · 16/07/2019 14:58

I did exactly what @BikeRunSki did and have had exactly the same experience. I also only have to have it cut back into the shorter style about 2 or 3 times a year as it holds it's shape so well so save oodles at the hairdressers compared to most of my friends.

ghostofharrenhal · 16/07/2019 15:02

Good god @ToastyFingers how gorgeous are you!

I used to have pixies in my 30s and really liked them. Now in my 50s and would love a short sassy style but find shoulder length more flattering, very short hair makes me look a bit gaunt as I have a thin face. And slightly saggy jawline Sad.

I have also stopped dyeing it so now have long-ish grey-streaked curly hair, which is a crime according to some in the Fasion Police!
