so now I am in my 30's I can't get away with just having hair...?

...I have to have a 'do'?

I hate going to the hairdressers. last went 2 years ago when I got married. I never see the point unless I am having something radical done. I used to dye my hair mad colours and have all different styles. Recently I have no time, money, or really inclination to spend time on it. On the rare ocassions I go out I straighten.

So my question is do I have to have a hair do? Am i being judged every time I go out? Should I be grown up - and have a layered bob or some such, or is it socially acceptable to just let it all hang - as it were?

Just interested - I have unmasked myself - for a limited time only. so you can judge away. I have a daughter so I don't want her to be ashamed of me when she is old enough to be so.

A decent cut makes all the difference, whether or not you would describe it as a 'do' or not, i dont know!

flightattendant · 28/07/2007 15:43

I feel your pain! Mine hasn't seen a hairdressing establishment for at least 2 years. It's just 'there', it's pretty long now but I only ever seem to have it down, or tie it up at the back, or occasionally have a plait.
I never know what to do with it.

So am going to hang around here till someone tells you what to do with yours!!!

(from a stylistically impeded and out of touch FA) xx

No I'm not really and never have been an actual flight attendant...can you tell by the hair

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2007 15:48

I had a peep and was not expecting what I saw after what you had described - you have lovely hair and I really like the way it falls gracefully over your shoulders.

People pay money to have there hair styled and all for what?

Your hair looks great, I bet it is easy for you to do.

If you go and have, as you put it, a grown up hair do then you are going to be fathing about every morning trying to get it to do what the hairdresser did.

Tutter · 28/07/2007 15:51

am guesing from your pic that your hair is quite fine, yes?

if so, then a shorter cut with layers may suit you more anyway

think it looks pretty in the pic though, and if you can get it like that with no/minimal effort, then leave it be

if howvere, that is your 'done' do, and it normally looks flatter, then maybe go for the chop

Desiderata · 28/07/2007 15:51

You hair looks great, bigmouth. It suits you, so I'd leave off for a while.

flightattendant · 28/07/2007 15:53

Ooh I had a look too! You look a bit like me! And my mum.

My mum used to wear hers up in a leather thingy at the back and it always looked really nice and dignified - us gals with long faces suit that style. Maybe try that?

I'm not the person to ask re 'styles' or do's, but I do find people seem to expect me to do something with mine too now I'm old! (33 too)

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/07/2007 15:55

Ivy you make me blush Thank you.

To clarify by 'do' i am meaning a style/ cut that I have to go to the hairdressers regularly to maintain. My point is can I get away with long hair that gets tied back (or put in plaits) every now and then. Or is that me labelled as mutton or slattern or whatever!

Every makeover show I see the women have their hair chopped in to a complicated bob which loks good as long as it is messed about with every morning - and I just cannae be arsed...

A leather thingy sounds intriguing Flightattendant!

I have wavy hair (I used to have proper ringlets when a child a proper orphan annie/ shirley temple! bleergh). So I straighten it to make me look sophisticated. The pic was just me not having 'done' anything (let it dry naturally after washing ususally - can't find my hairdryer at the mo anyway)

Exactly, I bet they go home and havn't got a clue how to style it the same and wish it was in a style they could actually manage.

Once it all goes grey and you are hitting 50 then I would say think about having something shorter.

To be honest if you have it cut and styled you will regret it. Your hair is pretty and if i am right you have a cow lip? the hair seems to raise to the left? Unless you get a really good hairdresser this could prove a problem for them and leave you with hair that will not do as you want.

I am not one for hairdressers, although mine is very pleasant, I visit once every two months and she cuts it wet and I go home. Its not that I dont like her, I do but I just want to be doing other things and donrt want to be there fathing about.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/07/2007 16:19

Just to underline how much that I am not the best judge of the appropriate hairstyles for me

  • when I was a student I thought it would be a good idea to have blue hair unfortunately I did not realise how necessary it was to bleach my hair first - so the result was very long swamp green hair.

I still have nightmares about the shocked silence in the lecture hall as I crept in. The 'wag' who thought it hilarious to recreate the witches deathscene from wiz of oz ('I'm melting, I'm melting' etc.) did not help!

ok, i know bugger all about style and easthetics atm... my sister sorts me out now and then as she actually has a sense of style. thank goodness and luckily for me. she can dance too, the jammy cow, but i digress.

what i came on to post/ask was... ivykaty has now posted the word 'fathing' twice and its bugging the hell out of me.
its 'faffing' surely??
or is it not really a word so people can say it however they like?

dunno why its bothering me really, but it is,

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/07/2007 16:26

a cow lick! that is why my hair flicks out annoyingly when I have a fringe!!

OP posts:
TranquilaManana · 28/07/2007 16:28

mine does that.
pita isnt it.
v 80's.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/07/2007 16:28

I assumed it was 'farting' hadn't noticed the misspelling I am sure Ivy can reveal the truth

OP posts:
Furball · 28/07/2007 16:30

what about somethin choppy like this to give it a bit of texture

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2007 16:32

I actually say the word with a "th" so it may be me saying the word wrong in the first place and then spelling at I say it.

It really is me - I have called all sorts of things the wrong things. Coil (as in birth control) I got confused and called it an element - my bf roard with laughter and ever since it has been known as an element.

As for a cow lip yes this is why your fringe sticks up all wrong, you have to be careful what style you choose with this type of hair line.

TranquilaManana · 28/07/2007 16:33

i think, furball, that choppy styles like that are exactly the sort which require faffing (or farting, works for me) about with every time you want to look like you dont live in a bush.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/07/2007 16:35

My dh has a double crown apparently so between us we could give vidal sassoon a headache i reackon!!

OP posts:
TranquilaManana · 28/07/2007 16:35

ivykate, thats hilarious

element could catch on.

ok, so i think its faffing. and cowlick (as in, it looks like a cow licked the front of your hair and left it sticking up like that)

but you say it how you like - im no pedant, oh no, not i

TranquilaManana · 28/07/2007 16:36

2 of my 3 ds's have that double crown business.

Furball · 28/07/2007 16:38

my choppy style just appears with no faff

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/07/2007 16:42

furball bet you don't have a double crown and a cowlick though eh!?

OP posts:
TranquilaManana · 28/07/2007 16:43

then i stand corrected.

hey, maybe ytou should get a choppy style, bigmouth? those are really easy and just appear without faffing about. just what you need.

arent you glad im about to come up with the perfect solutuion?

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/07/2007 16:53

lol tranquila!

i finally got my hair "done" yesterday and it looks so much better.
like yours,it was very long and straight ad just used to get tied back all the time. also it was still falling out in handfulls since my dd was born 16 months ago. so yesterday morning i looked in the mirror and thought fuck it it has to go, and go it has. it is now between chin and shoulder length and layered which is v easy to maintain cos the layers just hang and i dyed it myself last night.
i now actually look 30 and grown up rather than 30 and looking like a haggard old bag.
i dont know when i'll get the chance or money to get it done again though what with 3 kids though.
