Products that live up to the hype.

I’m a bit of a sheep when it comes to cosmetics and always buy the top rated products and usually end up being underwhelmed. I wonder whether it’s me not using the products properly or is it a bit Emperors New Clothes and no one wants to be the first to say, actually it’s a bit rubbish.

Recently I finally treated myself to Laura Mercier Illuminating tinted moisturiser and I have to say it is awesome. My skin looked amazing when I used it for the first time today. Several people told me I was looking really well.
It is an expensive product but i only had to use a tiny bit so I expect it will last a fair while.
What products would you say are as good as people generally claim and what products that are supposed to be amazing do you think are just hype? Be interesting to hear from MNetters.

No7 Hydraluminous foundation. Thought it was just another lower-end foundation using instagram etc to drive up sales. How wrong I was. It makes my skin look perfect (and I have terrible skin) I get compliments on my complexion for the first time ever since using it! If they discontinue it ever I don’t know what I’ll do.

Skincare by the Ordinary, particularly their retinoid products. They have really improved the quality of my skin and I've had so many compliments.

I also rate the ordinary . The vit c serum and hydraulic acid have definitely made a difference. The retinol products too. I don't think they are prescription strength but they have made a subtle difference to my skin texture

barbaramillicentr · 07/07/2019 07:50

Another for The Ordinary - the retinol and Vitamin C with hyaluronic acid, especially.

The Jeffree Star velour liquid lipstick formula is the best long wear matte on the market if you're into matte lips.

on getting rid of my lash extensions I've spent a lot of money on shit mascaras and lash serums those that have truly made a difference are
Revitalash
Hourglass extreme Mascara

Amazing

I came on to say the ordinary too!
Different products (greasy spot prone skin - niacinimide and salicylic acid have been my saviours) but excellent results!

digdug · 07/07/2019 08:03

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser. Just amazing.

Hourglass Ambient Light powders.

Essie gel nail polishes.

La Roche Posay anti-redness gel face wash.

Aveeno moisturiser.

Newton's Chiropody Sponge.

Flexitol heel balm.

Toni & Guy dry shampoo.

(Sorry, quite a long list there but they're all my staples that I cannot be without! Blush)

florriepeck · 07/07/2019 09:33

Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara.

BillieEilish · 07/07/2019 09:36

The Ordinary, especially the vit C cream. Have spent $$$$'s in the past on Estee Lauder etc. This knocks the socks off any other products I've ever used.

Very cheap too!

Elliesmommy · 07/07/2019 09:52

Very interested reading about the ordinary products. Are these the 2 you mix together ?

Products that live up to the hype.
Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2019 09:53

Am I the only one who doesn't really like The Ordinary? Maybe it's because I'm just looking for better skin rather than trying to correct a specific problem?

Bluesheep8 · 07/07/2019 09:55

Liz Earle shampoo and conditioner - fab.

Greyhound22 · 07/07/2019 09:56

HappyLoneParentDay · 07/07/2019 10:19

Re: The Ordinary, how do you know which acids etc to buy? There's so many and some clash with others and honestly, I just gave up. I have hyperpigmentation & dull, combination skin so I thought right, I'll look at what each of them helps with and choose one for hyperpigmentation. Turns out loads of them help with that! Some in morning some at night, some clash with other products etc. So I'm totally confused & lost. Don't have a clue what to choose! Confused

HappyLoneParentDay · 07/07/2019 10:21

Oh also, Bourjois CC Cream is amazing! I use it as a foundation and it covers amazingly well and does it's CC job also! 👍🏻

barbaramillicentr · 07/07/2019 10:24

@HappyLoneParentDay If you contact them with your skin concerns, they're more than happy to let you know which products you can use together!

barbaramillicentr · 07/07/2019 10:26

@Elliesmommy I would forego the extra hyaluronic acid as the Vitamin C comes with HA in. You can add extra once you're used to the lower dose after a month or two if you feel you need it.

I'd mix the Vit C with a retinol (0.2%).

HappyLoneParentDay · 07/07/2019 10:36

@barbaramillicentr Oh good idea! Thanks so much for that Gin

Elliesmommy · 07/07/2019 11:40

@barbaramillicentr thanks for that x
