Ingrown hairs on bikini line

alohavic70 · 24/06/2019 19:02

My daughter is really struggling with ingrown hairs on her bikini line. She's stopped waxing and has switched to shaving (in the direction of hair growth) and exfoliating and using bio oil but it just doesn't seem to be getting any better. She's also swapped her skinny jeans for looser fit trousers and skirts to get the air circulating around there!

With the prospect of a summer covering up, it's really sapping her confidence Could anyone offer any advice please?

Bio oil may not be helping. I’d switch it something containing salicylic acid. Nads do an ingrown hair solution that she can buy on Amazon.

EyesOpenWide · 24/06/2019 19:09

I would be strongly advising her to stop shaving skin that looks that inflamed and irritated.

Waxperts Wonderpads are really good but I think what she’s got going on there might need a GP visit!

Zarara · 24/06/2019 19:16

I would also suggest she stops shaving for a while to let the hair grown out as it looks irritated. I’m not sure how old she is or how appropriate you may think it is but I would suggest looking in to laser hair removal as a long term alternative. It helps get rid of persistent in grown hairs and can really work.

@alohavic70 I had this many years ago! Try sudacrem to calm the redness, apply at night and very thinly until redness away

When ready to shave, after shave apply a roll on with no perfume I used Nivia roll on leave it to try and re apply at night to ensure no breakouts

I know I know ! What someone first told me this I said not a chance! But it really works I still do it now Smile

Is she shaving with a razor? I used to get bumps/ingrowing hairs on my bikini line if I waxed or used a razor. I've found what works best for me - and doesn't cause any problems - is using an electric shaver. Then use Tend Skin afterwards. It works really well for me.

BarryMcguigan · 24/06/2019 19:42

Don't shave it makes it worse -

Hot wax at a salon
Tend skin (can buy from amazon) morning and night after a shower and and skin has dried off
Thin layer of Sudocrem after tend skin lotion has dried
Every 2/3 days a gentle exfoliate - I prefer to use a flannel rather than a scrub product

Also as much as possible give waxing a break - I don't wax (will trim to tidy with scissors) unless I'm going to be wearing a bikini

Nonotmenori · 24/06/2019 19:44

Scrub gloves and scrub hard daily. Takes a few weeks, but working for me now

loubieloulou · 24/06/2019 19:54

I have a solution for it : )

Was suffering terribly with that myself. Did s bit of research & found that resurfacing creams help. Tried & tested myself & lo & behold no more ingrown hairs since.

I currently use this in my face & have done for the past 3 years ( it has glycolic acid in it ) and that's what does the resurfacing.

Link for the cream is below

loubieloulou · 24/06/2019 19:56

Exfoliation is the key. BUT I tried manual exfoliating & it did help a little but it didn't solve the issue completely like this cream did.

Glycolic acid is powerful resurfacing stuff.

But bloody he'll it does work... on both wrinkles AND preventing ingrown hairs.

twomadefour · 24/06/2019 20:03

I have the same
Problem-hoping to get some ideas

ASauvignonADay · 24/06/2019 20:13

I say it on every thread like this but get her a Philips lumea - they're amazing. I wouldn't try waxing or shaving, I'd go straight for some kind of laser or IPL

Prometheus · 24/06/2019 20:15

Unless she's sat round a swimming pool in a bikini I would suggest she stops all form of hair removal.

Tableclothing · 24/06/2019 20:48

That looks really sore. Definitely need to just let it all heal up for now.

Skin Doctors do a salicylic acid product called Ingrow Go (use a glove or cover your hand with a plastic bag when you use it, if you value your fingernails), but apart from that just leave the whole lot alone until it's healed.

needsomesleepy · 24/06/2019 20:49

I have reported your post for the picture. I don't think that's appropriate or necessary.

alohavic70 · 24/06/2019 21:06

Thanks so much everyone for all your help. There's plenty to go on there and hopefully we'll make some progress.
I'm sorry if anyone found the picture offensive for any reason. I felt it was both appropriate and necessary to show the scale of the problem!

I used to get this. Particularly bikini line, I think because my clothing rubbed, but I also used to suffer a bit on my legs and armpits. I think some people have more sensitive/ingrown prone skin or particularly thick hair combo. Eventually I got a Philips Lumea which apart from reducing the regrowth, also somehow completely stopped my ingrown hairs and rashes. It’s expensive but it lasts a very long time and makes a huge difference.

felisemi · 09/12/2019 11:36

Hi @alohavic70 . I guarantee I have the answer:
I had this exact problem and it was just as severe or more. It was my bikini area, buttocks, legs and underarms. It started when i hit puberty and suffered through it until my mid 20s. No matter what I did, nothing worked! I couldn’t shave, wax or use creams. I would usually use an epilator but that would take me over two hours to do both legs at least. Not only did it hurt but I’d have to wait until the hair grew back completely and I’d still have marks all over from the ingrowns... I’m half asian so I have light skin but my father is hairy so I inherited his body hair. The hair on my legs was literally like that of a man’s. It was thick and dark, so you can imagine how it affected my self confidence. In fact, it was the biggest issue I had in terms of self esteem. I felt less feminine so I hardly wore skirts or shorts. I dreaded swimming too. So I thought I was doomed forever.

That was until I tried LASER HAIR REMOVAL. And OH MY GOODNESS, it literally changed my life! I cannot express that enough! Even after the first session, almost half my hair wasn’t growing back. I’ve had about four sessions and I haven’t done ANYTHING to my body hair for over four years! All those affected areas are CLEAR! No more ingrown hairs and no scars anymore either! I’ve had compliments about how I’ve got nice legs...etc. People that didn’t see what it was like before, think Im exaggerating when I tell them how bad it was. It boosted my confidence SO MUCH, that now I love being naked. I’m not a prude in that regard anymore.

Trust me, laser hair removal is the ONLY solution you have. It’s worth every cent. I managed to find somewhere that was priced reasonably so I got a great deal. But honestly, I’d pay ten times what I did, or more, getting the results I did and how much it changed my life. It will change your daughter’s life too.

StarlightLady · 09/12/2019 13:57

How else could the OP demonstrate this without a photo. I would suggest calendula cream and no hair removal until it becomes less angry. Then take up the raxor again (make sure it’s not a blunt blade), try a Raspberry Quattro razor and use unscented hair conditioner such as Simple. The razor glides with conditioner.

Alynn1991 · 29/04/2020 15:09

Hi
I saw this online and I had to reply . Literally had the same thing as the picture . I know this May be expensive but do your research. IPL laser hair removal. It works!!!! I now have no hair growing back on the bikini line and all the ingrown and inflamed spots have gone. I really really sympathise with the picture as I really know how it feels xx good luck

Lndnmummy · 29/04/2020 16:12

Hey, I feel for your daughter. I’d try to leave it until it calms and use some gentle exfoliation (glycolic acid for example). No need to buy expensive lotions I use a facial toner that’s too harsh for my face. Don’t use gloves or mittens and that can circulate bacteria around.
I’d then go for a Philips Lumea. This will help your daughter so much.

763freedom · 29/04/2020 17:21

Initially I would try & get a gp appointment as it looks like it needs something stronger to heal it at the moment. Encourage her to leave to grow until all healed and then choose a method to try from one of the above.
I do feel for her, it can be very painful and confidence knocking especially if they scar x

763freedom · 29/04/2020 17:22

P.s. they can do them over the phone at the moment, I had a similar thing and just had to send a photo over to a secure email & prescription sent straight to pharmacy x

Alynn1991 · 29/04/2020 19:28

I think telling your teenager daughter to stop shaving is the worse thing to do because if she’s like me she will do it anyway especially if she wants to go swimming. Contact laser hair removal specialist and they will be gone in 6 sessions .

TintinandSnowy · 29/04/2020 19:36

This brought back memories for me as I used to be like that up to the age of 30 or so!

Laser hair removal was just starting then, so I decided to give it a go, and suffice to say it changed my life for summer days and sports. It was expensive but well worth it for my confidence. Nowadays I would consider a Phillips lumea too.

CrotchetyQuaver · 29/04/2020 20:10

I always really suffered with ingrowing hairs from waxing, some got very infected. If the laser hair removals not an option right now then the only thing that worked for me was the horrible smelly hair removal cream. So it only got done when I needed it to be. I just use a bikini trimmer now and am resigned to being a Hairy Mary
