Hairdressers....is it me?

Sarcelle · 14/06/2019 17:44

Is it just me or do you come back from the hairdressers and wash your hair?

I despair of finding a great hairdresser. Now I have settled on an okay one who rescued my hair from a mullet that someone else cut in. Now it is starting to take on a bob shape (which I don't want but always seem to get) but he straightens the life out of it. I have left it for a couple of hours but it was like sheets of glass hanging from my head so I have had to wash it, and now it resembles hair again....

I am really tired of this haircut malarkey. I think I have had two cuts in my long lifetime that were fab, the rest have been on the continuum from so so to fucking diabolical leading up to the aforementioned mullet. It's expensive and a bit demoralising.

I think I am going to make hats my signature look....

Wet cut is the future!

HuggedTheRedwoods · 14/06/2019 18:24

No, its not just you. I find my hairdressers over the years usually start off ok but then laziness seems to creep in and I end up grateful to just look 'presentable' which is demoralising given the cost and especially if you want little boost for a special occaison. I left my last hairdresser after several years because of the straightners thing, no matter how many times I asked for it to be blow dried she'd try and get the straightners on it - even from damp! Just had my second visit to a new place and had to stop her from plugging the straightners in! Straightners really does feel lazy to me, I can get the straightners out myself at home but good blow drying is a real skill I'm paying for.

lhastingsmua · 14/06/2019 19:59

I adored the guy that cut my hair at my old salon - always cut my hair perfectly and styled it exactly how I wanted it, he just understood what I like. I would never have washed his work out, in fact I’d used to get annoyed if it started raining as I left the salon!

Other stylists since have been hit or miss though. Eg someone blow dried it straight and then straightened it, with lots of serum, so my hair looked too sleek/fine/weighed down that I had to wash it that evening. I have had stylists curl my hair really tightly to the point that I was desperate to straighten it out!

neveradullmoment99 · 14/06/2019 22:53

I can never find a hairdresser i like. They do an ok job sometimes and then i wash it and it goes back to looking utter shit. I havent been to a hairdresser for a year!

Pipandmum · 14/06/2019 23:00

One of the best cuts I had was spur of the moment in central London in one of those ‘no appointment needed’ type place.
But generally I have had to shop around and now I’m very happy with my stylist. Sometimes it’s better than others but I have very wavy hair so the weather affects it. It never looks the way she styles it but it’s nice for a couple days then back to my usual wash n go. My hair is the one thing that always looks pretty good luckily.

nothingwittyhere · 15/06/2019 12:06

Completely agree OP. I've lived with my hair long enough now to know what I like, how it behaves and how I like it styled but it seems every hairdresser I go to thinks they should ignore what I say because they know better. I don't want it fashionable, I want it how I like it! For a service industry, hairdressing really doesn't teach how to listen to the customer.

adagio · 15/06/2019 12:16

Totally agree, the price is unbelievable, they ignore what you ask for and ‘know better’. I avoid them but I can’t have long hair forever (getting too old for it!). Plus it’s only a matter of time until I get some greys and then I’ll have to dye it.

All hair dressers seem obsessed with long layers and taking the weight out of my hair, followed by a load of products which make it sticky and some serious over straightening.

That means I look a bit like a lampshade with a million flyaways as soon as I try and style myself - or I have to straighten the living daylights out of it everyday. If you cut it without the layers and ‘taking the weight out’ then it has enough weight to stay vaguely vertical and can also shape into reasonable looking beach curls with very little effort. I despair, and now avoid hairdressers.

MikeUniformMike · 15/06/2019 13:39

If they put 'product' in it I will wash it out as soon as I get home, which given that I will shower before going out and then have a wash & cut, is too much.
Current hairdresser is fab though. Not expensive and cuts in a way that my hair behaves.

SinglePringle · 15/06/2019 13:40

Nope. They cut and dry my hair beautifully and I can recreate it at home. Costs a fortune though.

CitadelsofScience · 15/06/2019 13:53

I've just found a new one, always had a wet cut before because I've been disappointed with the way they all blow dried my ridiculously out of control hair OR they did what's happened to you, straightened it like it's paper.
The new fantastic lady I've found did the most beautiful blow dry and I kept looking in the mirror and swishing my hair, the curls lasted for days as well.

mistermagpie · 15/06/2019 16:39

I've got tricky hair, very fine, fluffy, wavy and dry. My hairdresser dies a good cut and is brilliant with colour, which is why I still go to her, but my hair looks flat and lifeless after she has dried it. I've only had one hairdresser in my life dry it nicely but she wasn't good on the colour. I would never get my hair 'done' for a wedding or event, I just don't trust hairdressers to style my hair!

IhaveALooBrush · 15/06/2019 16:56

I find a good hairdresser and then the next time I book in they've left.
I hope it wasn't me.

QAQA · 15/06/2019 17:17

I'm a hairdressers worst nightmare, I inspect it for ages and very rarely am I completely happy with the job they've done.
The last time I had my hair cut was June 2018! I think I've found someone who I wouldn't mind doing my hair again, this guy had to rescue me after a bad stylist butchered my hair the day before a big meal out.
I can't stand small talk in general so hate being forced to talk crap whilst someone is cutting my hair.
Think I might have to brave a visit to sort my split ends though.

Wavyheaded · 15/06/2019 17:46

I stopped going to the hairdresser about 3 years ago because they never listened to what i wanted - no layers, blunt cut straight across, and no 'razoring' or whatever it's called, when they cut your hair 'upwards'. What did I get? Exactly that. My hair would be okish for the first couple weeks but then just frizz out, i have frizzy wavy hair anyway, and the 'razoring' and layers made it look worse, like a shagpile!

All they care about is that it looks good out of the salon, not how it's going to look after that.

I got so frustrated I now cut it myself, using YouTube videos. My hair hangs better now it's one length, I don't care if it's not precise it's good enough for me.

megletthesecond · 15/06/2019 17:49

I don't let them dry mine anymore. I just tie it back damp and deal with it in the evening. These days I tend to get it cut before I go to the gym.

I've got wavy / curly hair and I've not yet found a hairdresser who gets that you don't blast it with a diffuser. Letting it air dry keeps my curls.

Makemeaname · 15/06/2019 19:06

My hairdresser is lovely but I went to her yesterday asking for shorter long hair than I had. I came out with A bloody bob. I'm told it looks ok but it'll need so much maintenance which I really can't be bothered with.

SrSteveOskowski · 15/06/2019 22:14

I hate hairdressers. They never ever listen. My last one was great for a while, but then she just stopped giving a shit because all they were interested in in the salon was olaplex and lights, neither of which I was having.
I wasn't of any real use to them (money wise) so they didn't give a shit.

nellyitsme · 15/06/2019 22:59

I thought I'd found a good one - I must say this at least once a year for 30 years or more. My delight in thinking I've found a good hairdresser usually lasts two cuts at the most. don't think I'm fussy or awkward about my hair. I'm quite friendly and nice really

I've got thick, fine, curly wavy hair and hairdressers seem to think they've got to thin it out and/or straighten it. I constantly feel like my hair is work in progress either growing out a too short cut or a bad hair cut or wondering why it won't sit right once I've washed it a few days after a cut. I

I don't know if its me, or my hair that's the problem - maybe I'm not clear enough with the hairdressers about what I want, I don't know.

I've now got to the point that I'm scared of trying out a new hairdresser. I read recommendations on Facebook, I ask friends, etc but I convince myself they'll be no good and I daren't try them in case I end up with another bad cut. I've made and cancelled loads of hair appointment as I've got cold feet. I'm worried I'm getting a phobia

Sarcelle · 15/06/2019 23:09

Nelly I am the same. Two haircuts and then it goes to shit.

nellyitsme · 15/06/2019 23:29

@Sarcelle it's really upsetting isn't it?

I don't know what to do to find a decent hairdresser. I'm thinking about going to one that I used to go to over 5 years ago before I moved here, 50 miles away. He seemed to "get" my hair, and me. It'll be a 100 mile round trip though. Is that mad?!

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 15/06/2019 23:33

I've only ever had one hairdresser I actually liked. It's shit. I have really flat hair and it always looks bad, no matter what I do.

They never listen, their banter is shite and I don't like massages or being told what shit condition my hair is in.

Sarcelle · 16/06/2019 08:39

I have just looked at the Instagram of the hairdressers who I have been to for last two visits and the one I used before for a few years.

Both feeds showcase hair cuts they have done. There only seems to be two styles.

Both either showcase bobs or for younger clients, long wavy hair with balayage (spelling?). Would explain why my hair always end up in a bob.

I think hairdressers only do these two cuts/styles now. Weird. Annoying.

Jennbot · 16/06/2019 08:45

I stopped going to hairdressers 5 years ago. Find the first hair cut ok but always by the 3rd visit they talk so much as they think you're a best friend now and cut is lazy, uneven etc as a consequence. I've learnt to cut my own from YouTube.
Means I have to have longer hair than I want but it's better than paying someone to burn my ears with inane chat and try and flog me stuff.
Yes always washed again as soon as I got home to get all the products out that I said I didn't want. Just not worth it.

Sarcelle · 16/06/2019 08:49

My second haircut is not as sharp as the first. First thing I said to my DH is that the hairdresser was a nice guy but boy could he talk. I want him to cut not chat. If he can do both fine, but if he is paying more attention to the chat I want him to put a sock in it.

Last time I went I had dye on my ears, back of my neck, temples.I couldn't wear my hair up for ages until it had gone.
