Leather jackets and denim jackets - timeless or a bit common now...?!

Been thinking about getting one of each, but since then I've noticed so many people wearing them. So Mumsnet what do you think? Are they timeless classics that everyone needs in their wardrobe? Or are they a bit too common now...?! (Sorry common probably isn't the right word, not meaning to cause offence just can't think how else to word it)

I'm 47 and I wear both (fake leather, not real) and I look fantastic Grin

I wear the leather one with jeans, dresses, leggings, jogging bottoms and skirts - basically with everything. I tend to wear the denim one over summer dresses.

Bluntness100 · 13/06/2019 20:21

Leather yes, I have three, the one I wear all the time casually is an olive green Hugo boss fitted collarless one.

I'm also a no to denim and think they look a bit naff.

Wavyheaded · 13/06/2019 21:51

I have a dark blue denim jacket and I love it. I alternate between it and my green khaki one pretty much all through summer.

I also have a fake-leather brown jacket with the 'waterfall' type front, which is probably not the height of fashion but I love it because it makes my waist look tiny! Would love to be able to afford a 'proper' All Saints jacket one day, but they're a bit, ah pricey.

Both are timeless in the sense that like e.g. trench coats, jeans, breton tops they will literally be manufactured every single year and can be bought new at most price points.

Neither are timeless in the sense that you can buy one version of each and it will last you for years. Styles, cuts and colours change with fashion trends. This summers denim jacket for example is very 90s, very cropped or very oversized and a mid-blue slightly stonewashed colour. Next year it could be dark indigo denim, with a very shaped fit to the waist.

Same with leather jackets, the biker jacket style was very on trend about five years ago, it is definitely not the current jacket style or material for this autumn winter. Looks like the more oversized aviator style is coming in as the new shape but they will still manufacture the biker style.

All comes down to your personal style and how much you care about being completely on trend, knowing what suits your body shape, and what fits with your lifestyle.

My fake leather jacket is biker style. I know it's not in fashion any more and I do sometimes get some 'where's your bike?' jokes, but a few years ago I did have to donate the denim jacket I'd had in the nearly naughties, because it just looked totally wrong and I couldn't imagine wearing it again.

Nenuco · 16/06/2019 06:47

Yes to both. Denim for autumn and spring. Leather for winter.

evilharpy · 16/06/2019 07:45

I don’t care if they’re going out or are too common now, you’ll prise my biker jackets from my cold dead hands Grin

I have three black ones, one tan and one beige/cream.

I do have a couple of denim jackets but don’t wear them nearly as much as leather, probably because I wear jeans a lot and can’t do double denim.

palahvah · 16/06/2019 08:00

I've seen plenty of fashion pages this year with leather biker/ cropped denim over printed maxi or skater dresses, and I'm going to keep wearing mine although all the teens/twentysomethings I see wearing denim at the moment are wearing the baggier, more blouson style. I did that first time round and it does nothing for me so I'll be swerving that style for as long as poss.

dudsville · 16/06/2019 08:07

My leather jacket isn't biker. It's not got a collar and is very flat and light. I think this is more useful than the biker cut. I can wear or with a dress without looking as if I'm trying to be rocker chic this is important because my hair cream be more that way inclined and the biker would tip me over the edge. It's 20 years old but doesn't get more than 10 wears a year. I have 3 denim jackets. White and pale grey for summer. They don't get more than a few wears each year. A black one that's more a throw on, throw about, just nipping out with the dogs and back easy thing. I haven't had a blue one since the 90's.

IhaveALooBrush · 16/06/2019 09:03

I love my biker jacket.
I got it in a charity shop for £15. It's a real one, not a fashion one. It has lots if teeny pockets dotted about and is really warm.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/06/2019 09:34

"Denim for autumn and spring. Leather for winter."

I don't know how you can do this. I can only wear denim and fake leather in the summer. Even a day like today is too cold for them.

JaceLancs · 16/06/2019 11:17

I think they look too short on me
Thought that would improve as I’ve lost weight but still don’t feel right
I tend to wear denim shirts or linen shirts as jackets instead
My favourite is a vintage Levi’s faded peach coloured denim shirt which I bought second hand about 20 years ago

Todamhottoday · 16/06/2019 11:28

I have a Levis denim jacket and a suede dark tan 'denim jacket' shape, love them both. Like to wear the denim with summer dresses and skirts, other with loose trousers.

DH proper biker jacket fits me (its about 40 years old) but not worn it for some time.

I really dont care if they are in fashion or out, naff or not, I wear what I want and dont give a monkey chuff.

shinynewapple · 16/06/2019 12:01

I think @chasingseagulls is right that the styles change slightly. I have a denim jacket I bought a couple of years ago for wearing with dresses but it's quite dark denim and doesn't feel quite right now. I wouldn't wear it with jeans but would wear with looser trousers eg harem/ jogger style.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 16/06/2019 12:08

I have both but hardly ever wear the denim jacket as I won't double denim, what with not being a member of Status Quo and all!

I only really wear it with summer dresses, but the leather jacket i get much more wear out of.

The leather jacket was a superduper charity shop bargain, and is very lightweight, but I do have a couple of actual biker jackets that I will wear once they fit a bit better. I am happy to embrace elderly biker chick-chic! :o

evilharpy · 16/06/2019 18:08

I’m of an age (late 30s) that I remember Levi’s being the coolest thing ever, and that included jackets. That little red tab was the thing to wear or covet. I might need a visit to ebay for a Levi’s jacket. Mine are from H&M and Miss Sixty.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 16/06/2019 19:37

Both staples, my Levis jacket is from the 90s. The stonewashed cropped ones are best left to teenagers though IMO. And no double denim.

DontFundHate · 19/06/2019 21:46

Thanks everyone. I might try again with the denim jacket, the one I bought is hugely oversized which i guess might go out of fashion.

I just can't get to grips with my leather jacket but it's not real leather so maybe I should give some more a go too.

Thanks for the ideas

I think leather biker is a classic.

I think a denim jacket is very useful and inoffensive in the summer.
