Leather jackets and denim jackets - timeless or a bit common now...?!

Been thinking about getting one of each, but since then I've noticed so many people wearing them. So Mumsnet what do you think? Are they timeless classics that everyone needs in their wardrobe? Or are they a bit too common now...?! (Sorry common probably isn't the right word, not meaning to cause offence just can't think how else to word it)

Leather yay, denim nay.

I’ve got several leather jackets and love them. I gave my denim jacket to my teenage daughter.

Lweji · 13/06/2019 12:13

Yes to leather and no to denim too.

WanderingTrolley1 · 13/06/2019 12:13

Timeless classic. Both of them.

Lweji · 13/06/2019 12:15

Unless you have ethical objections go for real leather, rather than fake, though. Even if it's a cheaper sort of leather.

gubbsywubbsy · 13/06/2019 12:38

I wear both .. it's how you wear it 🤷‍♀️

StCharlotte · 13/06/2019 12:41

Denim's okay but I think leather jackets - well, biker jackets - don't even look good on the likes of Kate Moss or Alexa Cheung. They're too chunky and squeaky and rigid and just look really uncomfortable. I even checked out the proverbial "All Saints" biker to see if perhaps it was an extraordinarily soft buttery leather, but no.

They look okay on, er, bikers I suppose.

(I realise I'm in the minority here so don't take my word for it!)

PigletJohn · 13/06/2019 12:45

Not denim.

DontCallMeShitley · 13/06/2019 13:00

Not denim.

Some leather biker jackets look good. A flying jacket even better, especially a vintage one with front pockets rather than slip ones. Only really useful on cold days though.

Any cropped ones, absolutely not.

lhastingsmua · 13/06/2019 13:02

I LOVE my leather jacket - would wear it all the time if i could! It just pairs so well with dresses and skirts. I have an expensive real leather one though, it’s well tailored, silver hardware, a bit cropped and jet black - just looks clean and crisp.

You need a get a really nice one though, if you buy a basic one your mileage may vary. I personally don’t like leather jackets with quilting details.

Whether denim jackets are timeless or not depends on your personal style. They suit a Topshop aesthetic for want of a better description. I have a super light wash cropped denim jacket from Topshop that pairs well with summer outfits, I have loads of others but I just don’t reach for them anymore.

Both are wardrobe staples if you ask me.
Wouldn't wear real leather though.

neveradullmoment99 · 13/06/2019 14:45

Both are good to have.

Ellapaella · 13/06/2019 16:36

I have both. One slightly fitted denim jacket that is fantastic insummer that I wear with dresses and skirts. I have two biker jackets - I don't wear them that often as actually they aren't warm enough for very cold days and are too chunky and look wrong on warm days.
Both are probably wardrobe classics but I think it's essential to find the right one. A badly fitting biker that's too big or loose over the shoulders doesn't look good imo.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/06/2019 16:39

I love my leather jacket but it's not a biker jacket - it's a second hand man's one with a hood. Perfect for wet days like this!

I love my denim jacket too but I've had it since I was 18 so can't claim to be at the height of fashion. In fact I'm not sure why I'm here...

Slinks out of thread.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 13/06/2019 16:42

I love both, and wear them loads

I am also middle aged and live in the country

ergo, they are probably totally uncool, common and naff Grin

Yes to both. My leather jacket (black) is a very plain collarless one. I think the collarless just sit better.
My denim one is just a cheapy. I think it's H&M or Zara a couple of years ago, but slightly cropped and fitted.

Hedgehogblues · 13/06/2019 17:27

Have you thought about not being a snob?

LolaSmiles · 13/06/2019 17:30

Both can look classic, or on trend or dated depending on how they are styled and the style of the jacket.

I love mine and dont pay attention to being the height of classic style or on trend, but I don't mind. Its my style and I'm happy with it

emilyhamptoncakeslice · 13/06/2019 18:17

I have both. Why are people saying "not denim"?

Ellapaella · 13/06/2019 18:35

The shops are full of denim jackets.. I see people everywhere every day wearing them but maybe in the mumsnet bubble they are now not cool. Who cares? I love mine. I've been wearing a denim jacket since I was 19 and I'm 40 now. I'd say that's fairly timeless.

Lumene · 13/06/2019 18:40

Both staples. I have just rediscovered denim jackets. Agree with PP that it’s all about how you wear/style them.

WhatsInAName19 · 13/06/2019 18:42

Both staples for me. I think it depends on your personal style, how you wear them etc but I certainly don't think they have to be boring.

Have you thought about not being a snob?
Don't think OP has demonstrated any snobbery. She is asking if these things are common i.e. run of the mill. I don't think she means common in an insulting way. In fact she makes a point of this in her post.

fancynancyclancy · 13/06/2019 19:28

I think both are timeless,

what do people wear instead denim jackets in the summer?

Gwenhwyfar · 13/06/2019 20:13

I wear my biker jacket in the summer, not real leather. It's not warm enough most of the year.
I think denim jackets look good with long summer dresses so I wouldn't mind having one.

AnnaNimmity · 13/06/2019 20:17

I wear both. I have black and white denim atm - my dd has stolen my blue denim one.

and a leather biker too .

They're not common!
