How do you stop the wires come through on underwire bras?

I’m fed up of paying £35-40 and them being ruined when the wire pokes through. I don’t like hand washing them as I feel I want them to be washed properly in the machine.

When you find out, please let me know!

moreismore · 02/06/2019 19:36

Wash them inside a pillow case or delicates bag on a gentler cycle?

ThomasHardyPerennial · 02/06/2019 19:36

I wash mine on the delicates cycle, and put them each in little mesh bags. Seems to work for mine!

BadTigerKitty · 02/06/2019 19:42

If you pay that much for a bra, you really should hand-wash. Why do you think handwashing doesn't get things clean? You do know handwashing requires detergent and hot water, right?

I think I've have one bra ever that had the underwire poke through. I hand-wash them all - both the cheap and expensive.

Thatsnotmyotter · 02/06/2019 19:43

Are you definitely wearing the correct size and a style that suits your breast shape?

BogglesGoggles · 02/06/2019 19:44

This has never, ever happened to me.

BillywilliamV · 02/06/2019 19:44

I’ve not had one come out for years, I wash mine in the machine in a little net bag from John Lewis

rosydreams · 02/06/2019 19:46

i get mine on ebay ex m&s stock much cheaper but it is infuriating when good old faithful betrays you and trys to stab you

DramaAlpaca · 02/06/2019 19:47

The mesh bags are good for machine washing. I also check occasionally for loose underwires & sew them back in before they come out completely.

susiegrapevine · 02/06/2019 19:52

I just sew it back in when this happens. But it normally only does on old bras.

CaptSkippy · 02/06/2019 20:05

Try sport bras. They have no underwire and are generally quite sturdy. I have had mine for years and always machine wash them.

PickAChew · 02/06/2019 20:56

I put a few bras at a time through on a delicates cycle and have only ever had one wire come through, on a bra that already was well past its best before date.

Wonkybanana · 03/06/2019 20:59

I always wash mine in the machine at 30 degrees and never have the wires poking through. But don't put them in the tumble dryer. The heat causes the wire to expand and lengthen and the only place the extra length has to go is to force its way through the stitching that holds it in place. So when the bra cools and the wire goes back to normal length, the hole in the fabric is still there and the wire works its way through as you wear it.

XingMing · 03/06/2019 21:13

I've never had an underwire fail. But I always put bras in a lingerie bag at 30 degrees. My bras cost too much, at £40, to be carelessly washed. I expect 3-5 years wear out of each, but I have four, plus two sports bras.

JaneR0chester · 04/06/2019 09:18

I wear bras in that price range and have always hand washed mine. I tried washing them on a delicate wash in the machine but the wires poked through and ruined the bra.

However, I've recently bought and started using bra laundry bags, mine have a plastic frame on the top and bottom of the bag, to keep it rigid and to protect the underwire. It's been a revelation and now I just stick all my underwired bras in with my normal washing. Something like this

LoafofSellotape · 04/06/2019 09:21

Just sew it back in if it happens.

I use a mesh bag on a delicate cycle.

BusterGonad · 04/06/2019 10:07

If you wore the right size bra this would never happen, they come out due to not fitting you properly so there's too much pressure on the wires. This has never happened to me, I always get measured and my bras fit properly.

I pretty much only wear Triumph bras. This has never happened with them. I only machine wash.

Crustaceans · 04/06/2019 10:14

I haven’t had this happen for years. And bras need to cope with my survival of the fittest washing policy.

Mine are all Freya bras and they seem to cope with being machine washed (sometimes at 60) and even tumble dried occasionally (when I haven’t been thorough enough in separating out the things I want to air dry).

RavenLG · 04/06/2019 10:15

My entire bust is kept wholly aloft courtesy of Gorilla Glue.

I've not had it happen in a while to be honest but I found hand washing and the right size has solved it.

JustHereWithPopcorn · 04/06/2019 10:41

Buy new ones they probably need replacing

onemouseplace · 04/06/2019 12:38

I put mine in a mesh bag and stick in the washing machine and they generally last for several years and are probably way past their best by the time the underwire either pokes through or, as happened to me a couple of months ago, the wire snapped in half under my book and was poking me in two places.

I do buy very sturdy bras though Grin

Jamsangwich · 04/06/2019 12:47

I machine wash, but use a lingerie bag (cheapy off amazon, I think) and do a bit of handstitching and sometimes machine stitching if there's some repair work needed. If you keep an eye out and catch things early, you can really get a lot of "extra time" out of an old bra.

Very · 04/06/2019 13:20

This has never, ever, ever, happened to me. And I have big works so the wires work hard.

They go in a net lingerie bag in the wash at 40 degrees.

OP come back and tell us what the hell are you doing wrong? Grin
