Can never achieve these hair looks, help!

Bit of a style crush on Jenna Coleman and my hair is similar length. I can never achieve these touselled kind of hair looks (or find them on YouTube as I don't know what they are called). Will post as separate posts so please reference each post if you can help name the style or identify the techniques! This one I like how its not too fussy.

I know Jenna, she is lucky enough to have naturally very straight thick hair and to be honest she could just wash it and let it air dry and it would look fine. I think having that naturally good hair texture works. I have naturally frizzy, wavy hair that looks like Diana Ross if I just leave it. The only way I can get this look is to blow dry it straight with a Big Hair and then put it in a bun and sleep on it!

For me I swear by joico shampoo and only conditioner on the bare end (otherwise it drags it down) then I curl and brush it out. This is day 2, so not the best.

For the first pic

Either
a) comb it when wet, squeeze with towel, add mouse and scrunch it a bit when you dry it
B) blow dry roughly without combing first with head upside down then use a paddle brush once dry
C) blow dry normally then add dry shampoo or volumising powder afterwards

I usually do b) as it's the laziest

GreenTulips · 01/06/2019 12:45

Run water through your fingers and scrunch the ends - then put in some hairspray and dry gently scrunching the ends

EleanorOalike · 01/06/2019 13:40

Yes Joico even takes my frizz and I don’t have to do much with it! Good call.

Wenttoseainasieve · 01/06/2019 15:49

The knicker trick worked! I tied it up in a bun using them as a bobble, and now loose waves, no bobble ridges!!! Shock

I am impressed, however can i just ask the two who recommended this technique, how did you discover it? Grin

Neilsfavouritechilli · 01/06/2019 16:01

I need to see what this knickers trick looks like. I cant imagine what it's meant to look like in.

Aberforthsgoat · 01/06/2019 16:14

Me neither! Is it literally just using knickers like a bobble or does part of the fabric have to cover the bun if you see what I mean

Drogosnextwife · 01/06/2019 16:24

Can someone please post pics of the knicker bun.

snapandfartaftermartialarts · 01/06/2019 17:00

Use a curling / wave wand.
Or large paddle hair straighteners to curl.

Curl a piece and once released from the iron pull the hair down by the end to straighten and let go
Repeat on whole head
Once hair is completely cool use a tangle teaser and brush through ...
done x

So please understand I'm not some deranged perv wanting to see knickers in hair, but I'd like to see what it's meant to look like when it's up. I've tried it and have a lot of spare fabric and a stupid ponytail.

CourageCalls · 01/06/2019 20:48

Very interested in the knicker styling technique!

Wenttoseainasieve · 01/06/2019 21:52

I tried googling various versions of 'knickers' 'waves' 'hair'... probably not wise Grin

I didn't take a pic but I did as advised by earlier poster, and put my hands through the leg holes so the knickers were on my wrist like a bobble, then used them to tie my hair up in a bun. Just like a big bobble! And it did make nice waves. I used a pair of toddler pants actually because they were at the top of the (clean!) laundry pile, but I'm going to go full sized next time!

Neilsfavouritechilli · 02/06/2019 00:26

This helps, so both legholes, bun and bobble effect. I'll be trying this tomorrow.

Toothlessismyspiritanimal · 02/06/2019 01:13

For those using Joico shampoo, which one would be best for thick hair with a slight wave? Looking on Amazon and they do loads of different ones.

managedmis · 02/06/2019 01:22

Knicker trick was discovered whilst bathing the kids, not wanting to get hair wet and only having knicks to hand. Twiddle around and whoop de do, hair pinned up., out of the way.

Unpin for tumbling waves.

This

Is the range I use, also have family and friends who use it. Most of us have thick, wavy, frizzy or coarse hair. Best to not put the conditioner too close to the roots though.

IHeartArya · 02/06/2019 09:15

Do you get neck crick with the knicker trick - see what I did there Wink

hugoagogo · 02/06/2019 09:20

I seem to remember sock buns being a thing a few years back, is it the same principle?

Youngandfree · 02/06/2019 10:03

I use this one

Thanks Eleanor and Young Smile

Neilsfavouritechilli · 09/06/2019 18:18

Today's the day, knicker bun is in. I'll let you know about my fabulous mane tomorrow.

Jaxinthebox · 09/06/2019 18:32

Im going to try the knicker trick tonight!

wheresmymojo · 09/06/2019 18:38

I'm just here for the knicker bun Grin

BrightYellowPostItNotes · 09/06/2019 18:43

Victoria beckham started the knicker bum craze. No one needs a photo. Literally put the two leg holes together and treat it like a massive bobble. It’s been a thing for 20 years!
