Not too gypsy like though 😬. Not sure where to start as so much on-line but looking for bit of tassel, crochet type look - tops and dresses would be great thank you!

I had the same thought yesterday Josepheen!

OP unless you’re looking for a pretend wardrobe (for a theatre production or whatever) I’d say that whatever you choose to wear to a festival becomes festival clothing. And if ‘boho’ isn’t your usual style you may end up with outdated pastiche rather than louche stylishness.

Can you not just work out what you’ll need and shop accordingly?

chasingseagulls · 28/05/2019 12:22

Yeah more detail needed, OP. Totally agree with PP, authentic bohemian dressing comes from a lifestyle and desire to live ethically, sustainably, creatively etc, and is probably about as far from conventional fashion and the traditional way of shopping for clothes as you can get.

Having said that, Top Shop and Asos usually create a festival section around this time of year to cater for festival goers who want to go a bit crazy for one weekend only. The current festival fashion isn't boho though, it's lots of sequins and feathers and dayglo and rainbow metallics and glittery face paint. Also completely disposable and totally "unbohemian" in intent.

So, is this for a festival or do you just fancy a new way of dressing long term?

tierraJ · 28/05/2019 18:26

If you don't have much of a budget look for festival clothes in Primark/ New Look / H&M.

Ive noticed that the festival & general fashion look of the moment tends to be early - mid 90s & that is what is mainly available in the high street rather than boho.
Basically short denim cut offs, floral tea tops, Vans, boxy denim jackets, crop tops, combat prints & neon colours etc

Unless you are actually dressing up in 60s - 70s hippy style to wear to a festival in which case try vintage shops?

tierraJ · 28/05/2019 18:30

If you want a dress there are some cute flowery tea dresses in new look & Topshop which you could wear with boots or trainers or flats, & buy a cropped denim jacket to go with it.

This would look ok at a festival as well as be able to be worn again in the summer.

malificent7 · 28/05/2019 18:39

Im going for sequins for festival looks this year. Sequinned catsuits/ playsuits/ leggins etc.

chasingseagulls · 28/05/2019 18:48

I think it would be helpful to know if the OP is actually looking for clothes to wear for a festival, or if the word was just a descriptor for the style of clothing she is looking for to wear everyday (or for fancy dress). Two very different things.

For genuinely bohemian clothes I'd look for those independent fairtrade/ethnic shops on the outskirts of towns. Or go and visit Stroud or Glastonbury, practically every shop on either high street will sell what the OP is looking for.

Hello, so sorry only just back on line!

Thank you so much for your input. Right well, I love the outdoors, environment, travelling (backpacked loads when I was younger) . I suppose I was thinking vaguely of wearing to a festival (went to loads of free ones years ago and used to wear all those tie n dye hippy sort of dresses and plaits but I'm older now so figure I'd look pretty daft).

Not really after the young day glo look no, more sort of ethnic, slight nod to tie and dye, love silver bangles and turquoise knotted friendship bracelets which I wear all the time. My favourite ever necklace was from Joe Brown's funnily enough and is a sort of leather look brown thong with a little rustic, battered cross attached. I like Etsy and Anthropologie but Etsy takes forever to plough through.

Love Glastonbury, the town - went to the festival lots of times years ago but suspect it's very different now. I'm miles away from there though so needs to be on-line.

Zara TRF brand normally have lots of this type clothing.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 28/05/2019 21:49

Size? Shape? Budget?

ZorbeeAndTheLemur · 28/05/2019 22:11

I'd go for vintage clothing. I was recently in Amsterdam, where there is a very Boho vibe, and it's packed full of vintage shops with amazing clothing in them. Presumably all the cool Boho people I saw there buy their clothes from the vintage stores.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 28/05/2019 23:45

Gringo or Free People. I don't think you are too old for tie dye!

Weirdly The White Company has a toned down boho vibe this year

anthisan · 29/05/2019 09:13

George size 6/8, twig like, not mega expensive but not super cheap budget either

anthisan · 29/05/2019 09:17

I see what you mean about White Company, I do love a bit of cheesecloth but you never see that anymore. Not keen on being swamped though in the swirly stuff.

I loved that Farah Fawcett look of little cheesecloth crop like top tied at the waist with Daisy Duke shorts! Oh and a fringed bag

ShowOfHands · 29/05/2019 09:22

I find festival wear hilarious. Every year, denim cut offs, a tasseled crop top and a straw hat and wellies and Marge from accounts is festival ready.

I go to a lot of festivals and live in cheesecloth, tie dye and patchwork all the time but shop in charity shops or on Ebay or I make my own.

Brands wise, I like Joe Browns, Nomads, Gringo, Gudrun Sjoden, People Tree, Punkyfish, Jordash, Pachamama but never buy new.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 29/05/2019 09:23

Sigh ... I hate sharing this website. Even though I just don’t have this sort of lifestyle any more ...

(I can waste an entire morning following designers found here to their own websites.)

The sequin/day glow look is the antithesis of the original festival and boho philosophy ... "yay - there's not enough plastic in the world, let's shove it all over our clothes as well!".

I pick up a lot of the types of thing you're describing at vintage kilo sales - they are so much fun, the ultimate jumble sale really! Think they happen all over the country - just google "vintage kilo sale".

RuffleCrow · 29/05/2019 17:14

Agree with pps. Festival gear should be what you'd normally wear in the summer. It's not the Rocky Horror Show Grin

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 29/05/2019 17:23

I don't agree with those saying "just wear what you normally wear", it should be just "wear what you want to wear, whether it's your normal style or not" (although take into consideration your impact on the environment and those around you). Festivals should be places of freedom and adventure, why the hell shouldn't Marge from accounts have a weekend of wearing her hair in Princess Leia buns and a crochet minidress if she wants to?
