Can you wear trainers in an office?

Needhelpfeelingcold · 21/05/2019 13:39

Or something similar?

I’ve got a new job and it’s in a massive really intimidating glass walled and chrome finishing type place.

I cant do smart shoes, ballets or heels. Are there any type of casual comfortable shoes to wear and not look rough? Could I wear clean smart superga’s or converse, as long as I’m dressed nicely?

I mean not “could I”, will I look weird?

hugoagogo · 21/05/2019 13:47

It really depends on the place, how were people dressed at the interview?

BikeRunSki · 21/05/2019 13:49

Not in mine. I wear brogues.

Teddybear45 · 21/05/2019 13:49

Depends on the organisational culture. But I find it hard to believe you can’t do any smart flats.

Omzlas · 21/05/2019 13:51

You can't do any type of flat shoe?

If it's smart wear, trainers wkll stick out like a prick in a brothel.

thedevilinablackdress · 21/05/2019 13:53

Depends entirely on the organisation.
Might be safer to go for (leather) trainer-esque footwear. Clarks, ECCO, M&S good starters

hanahsaunt · 21/05/2019 13:55

I sometimes wear my 'smart' Converse which look appropriate with the rest of what I am wearing. No one else does. I don't care. No one has said anything ...

NataliaOsipova · 21/05/2019 13:57

If people wear suits, definitely not. If it’s a media type place where people wear jeans, probably.

ItsAllGone19 · 21/05/2019 14:07

I'm gobsmacked that you're able to wear converse whereas normal flat shoes are a problem. I couldn't wear a converse type shoe for longer than an hour without being in considerable pain from lack of support.

As someone with chronic issues that mean I have to have comfortable footwear I highly recommend the cushion walk type shoes from Clarks or the smart shoes that places like Skechers do.

As to whether you can wear trainers in the office. My office has a casual dress code, it's clearly outlined what footwear is suitable (pretty much anything apart from backless footwear) so I can't imagine that a more 'polished' office wouldn't have a readily available dress code for you to reference.

Needhelpfeelingcold · 21/05/2019 14:41

It looked like smart casual, but no jeans. They’re all academics and I’ll be working alongside them. Maybe I’ll buy some loafers. I’ll have a 30min walk aswell so that’s why I’m wondering if it’ll look weird wearing converse. I’ve looked through the handbook there’s no mention of footwear.

NicoAndTheNiners · 21/05/2019 14:42

I'm an academic and tend to wear dresses at work combined with either Vans or black Nike trainers.

ExpletiveDelighted · 21/05/2019 14:43

Are sandals allowed? I'm the same, the only sort of shoe I can wear are trainer types so I go straight from boots to sandals and back.

Needhelpfeelingcold · 21/05/2019 14:49

I don’t do sandals. I can’t show my toes it makes me cringe. I have nice boots though, but can’t wear boots (even ankle boots) in the summer. I might have to pull a look off.

I have these they are cleverly disguised trainers which look like shoes. Can walk miles in them they are so comfy www.clarks.co.uk/c/Un-Rio-Rise/p/26140405

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/05/2019 15:07

You can't do sandals, smart flat shoes, heels or ballet shoes? Or is it just the firmer materials in smart shoes?

What do you wear day to day? What did you wear to the interview?

You can wear trainers to the office, change them at your desk, and change back when you go out for lunch.

cuppycakey · 21/05/2019 15:28

I work in academia - I wouldn't wear converse to work unless you have a very very junior position and never want to get a promotion. I say this as someone who loves Converse Grin

Why can't you wear other shoes? Can you explain, then we might be able to help you.

How about:

Summersunshine2 · 21/05/2019 16:02

Have you heard of Hotter Shoes?

Needhelpfeelingcold · 21/05/2019 16:07

So I’ll try to explain. I need something flat but with a bit of cushion and bounce. Nothing completely flat otherwise I stomp like a penguin. I probably could wear smart shoes but the material needs to be soft and when I think of smart I think blisters.

I wore wedged Clark’s suede heels to the interview. They’re the only heels I have that I can wear for about 1.5hrs and not cry of pain.

Depends on the sector, I work in a chrome and glass office but we are a tech company so everyone is ultra casual, jeans and converse. Did you notice what others were wearing? On smarter days I wear loafers

cuppycakey · 21/05/2019 16:15

I used to get really bad blisters until I realised I had wide feet Blush

What size are your feet? I ask because a friend has a similar issue and she wears Clarks childrens shoes as the leather is soft. Look at these for inspiration?

Needhelpfeelingcold · 21/05/2019 16:18

So I do believe the shape of my feet has changed. I used to be a size 6 my whole life up until about 6 months ago I measured my feet because every shoe I wore was pinching. Turns out I am now a size 7.

I used to get hotter shoes email but they stopped after gdpr. I’ll have a look

Those ecco shoes look quite comfy.

sugarbum · 21/05/2019 16:20

The suggestions above are good. Clarks and Hotter both do extremely soft shoes that are just as comfy as trainers. Sketchers do these as well. They're even called trainers, but they look like ballet shoes. Pavers. Gabor. All do comfy ballet type shoes.

Madcats · 21/05/2019 16:20

Back in the days when I was expected to wear a skirt suit and heels most of us would wear trainers/comfier shoes to walk to the office and then swap shoes when we arrived.

Could you wear loafers (deck shoes at a push)?

Swiftier · 21/05/2019 18:22

If you have a walk to the office can’t you wear trainers for that and something like brogues, loafers etc just for the day at work?
