Can you wear trainers in an office?

Or something similar?

I’ve got a new job and it’s in a massive really intimidating glass walled and chrome finishing type place.

I cant do smart shoes, ballets or heels. Are there any type of casual comfortable shoes to wear and not look rough? Could I wear clean smart superga’s or converse, as long as I’m dressed nicely?

I agree with Summer Sunshine ,the Hotter range of shoes are fantastic .Also if you have wide feet. Cosy Feet are very good .lots of room and a cushioned sole .Can be a bit old fashioned ,but they do a pretty Mary Jane style which would be good to wear to work in a office .Can you get bus (or bike) for the 30 minute walk this would take some of the pressure off your feet TBH.

Repetto do ballerinas that are properly constructed, very comfortable and last ages. Some colors will be smart enough for the office.

OP only you know what goes at your place of work. The rest of us can only guess. It depends on how senior you are, how casual or otherwise the culture is, whether you'll be client facing etc etc.

Wear something comfortable for the commute in, and something smarter - but could still be flats- during the day. After a week of clocking what other people are wearing you'll have more of an idea what is acceptable.

Gel insoles help with 'bounce'
I have lots of Hotter shoes, very comfortable, for work. These are my current favourites, usually worn with navy or blue chinos.www.hotter.com/gb/en/dew-shoes-dewzxs-product?fit=Standard+Fit&colour=French%20Blue

lhastingsmua · 22/05/2019 16:07

To be fair, I struggle with flat shoes for work too. But that’s mainly because I’m short so prefer heels, I also find heels more comfortable as I weirdly tend to get blisters/injuries more often with flat shoes.

Have you seen the 1461 Dr Martens? You can get them in all black or a patent finish which I think could be work appropriate for your office.

ambereeree · 22/05/2019 16:09

Fit flops. I have a black loafer type pair with white soles.

FabulouslyGlamourosFerret · 22/05/2019 17:42

Superga and Converse are rubbish for your feet, they are SO flat.

Google Clark's 'funny dream' they're nice

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 22/05/2019 18:06

I work in academia - I wouldn't wear converse to work unless you have a very very junior position and never want to get a promotion. I say this as someone who loves Converse

I work in academia too. I wear Converse or my bright pink Nike trainers, usually coupled with a smart business suit, to work and it isn't a problem. I definitely do not have a very junior position Blush

NicoAndTheNiners · 22/05/2019 19:15

No I don't have a junior position either and like I said earlier I wear trainers and Vans. And I see women more senior than me wearing trainers. Maybe it depends what college/school within the university you work in?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/05/2019 20:41

The OP did say it was an intimidating glass and chrome type place. Maybe it's too self conscious for trainers.

Kanga83 · 22/05/2019 20:59

Have a look at the Tri and Hidi range in Clark's. I can't wear heels or most flats because of a foot problem. These and the sole reviver range in next are fab for me.

Kanga83 · 22/05/2019 21:03

https://www.marksandspencer.com/leather-wedge-heel-sporty-riptape-trainers/p/p22401611?carousel=FUNHATTSIMILAREND these look good if you wear trousers, I'm not sure how they'd look with a skirt.

notacooldad · 22/05/2019 21:10

I wear converse or Vans.
Most of the blokes wear Adidas and a lot of the women wear Nike.
We were joint about the brand divide!

ImpracticalCape · 22/05/2019 21:12

OP I wear trainers to walk to work (as do most people) and then change into something smarter when I get there. It's almost irrelevant how comfortable they smart shoes are are as 90% of the time I'm sitting down. Any walking I do is to and from the coffee machine or photocopier or a meeting room which is about 10 metres away. All on carpet.
Even though I'm sitting down it's a corporate environment and I'd feel very dressed down if I was walking round the office in trainers and no one else does it apart from Fridays

Namaste6 · 22/05/2019 21:23

What about a pair of soft leather wedge brogues - silver?

Goldenbaubles · 22/05/2019 23:23

@kittekats nothing just bear feet thinking maybe those tight feet things might be good for warm days but they are leather so not too bad. They have memory foam insoles and are like walking on air.

Comfiest shoes I have had in years

evilharpy · 22/05/2019 23:32

Not in my office. I have these leather brogue style trainers from Karen Millen and decided one day I was going to wear them to work, but chickened out and swapped them for normal brogues. However if your environment is less corporate than mine then something like this might work?

CluelessAboutClothes · 22/05/2019 23:48

I got some brogues from Diechmann. They are really comfy and not clumpy. Actually they do a lighter version as well. Take a look there!

lhastingsmua · 23/05/2019 08:40

I think suits and trainers is such a fashion aesthetic - very Topshop/Zara/instagram. I used to work at Topshop and that was the sort of thing that would be in trend. So I don’t quite think it will ever have the same corporate aesthetic as a suit with smart shoes.

Whether you can get away with trainers or not at your workplace depends on the specific workplace surely. I think OP should start work and see what their colleagues wear before buying some new stuff.

Needhelpfeelingcold · 23/05/2019 09:07

Thanks for all your suggestions, I’m really liking the red jewel shoes on the hotter site, but can’t justify spending that much on one pair of shoes! But i absolutely love that design and colour.

I think I’ll probably buy a pair of loafers and brogues and go from there. I’ll be out shopping next week, so will see what’s available. I think it’s a good idea to wait and see what others are wearing in my department before buying anything. Our team seems quite small, and mostly my age (mid-30’s) so I’ll get a good idea in the first week what’s expected.

I’m still wanting to be a rebel though and go in one day with some converse and see what happens!

Thanks goldenbaubles I think i’ll go and try some on!

SushiTime · 23/05/2019 09:24

I bet you could get away with these with a wide ankle trouser.
