What to wear with a floaty dress while traipsing around London? Converse? Am I too old?

Due to head of to London in a few weeks and hoping the weather stays nice Envy

If it does I’ll be probably be packing a couple of long, floaty dresses. But what to wear on my feet? The footwear has to be comfy enough to withstand walking all day.

I’m in my 40’s and thought about wearing my converse (which I usually wear with jeans) but would I look totally ridiculous wearing them with a dress? I can’t wear those ballet pumps as they fall off my feet and I don’t think they’d be too comfy to wear all day.

Any style tips etc would be most welcome. If not converse then please give me some pointers Grin

41 here and just wandered through America in sun dresses and light grey converse, looked good and my millennial friends approved Grin

Amy326 · 16/05/2019 23:48

Saltwater sandals - so comfy. Much more comfortable than converse!

Lucked · 16/05/2019 23:50

Converse or similar ( I prefer superga) or sandals. Chunky flat comfy sandals are very in - Zara has lots.

Tolleshunt · 16/05/2019 23:50

White trainers? Very much the look in my part of London, still.

SweetMarmalade · 16/05/2019 23:58

The last time I wore sandals around London my feet were black, to much tube hopping Grin Plus my Converse are ‘bedded’ in but I do have time to soften a new pair of shoes/sandals.

Some great suggestions though, thank you all. First time I’ve posted in Style and Beauty and didn’t think I’d get such quick responses.

Qs, I’m please the Millenials approved Grin

Tolleshunt, I think white trainers look great but I always think I’ll look daft in them. Anything white on my feet makes me feel like I have size 9’s.

Lucked, thanks, I’m going to have a look at some of your suggestions.

And Amy, thanks. I’m not sure about the Saltwater sandals. I’ll have a good look at their site though, comfy is top priority.

Dresses with trainers is fine for traipsing round London, if anything I'd suggest midi rather than maxi on the dress front.

SweetMarmalade · 17/05/2019 00:26

Thanks Mac. They are more midi than maxi. Wore maxi last time and was feared of getting sucked into the escalators.

Lucked, I’ve just had a nosey at Superga, I really like them. Do they take a lot of bedding in?

Fit-flops or Skechers sandals

thedevilinablackdress · 17/05/2019 07:55

You will look extremely normal wearing converse and a dress.

And, standard MN statement: You are NOT 'too old' for anything unless you last wore it when you were 4 and it doesn't fit you.

Jojoanna · 17/05/2019 08:01

I have white supergra very comfy

LizzieSiddal · 17/05/2019 08:05

I’m on my 50s and midi wear dresses and trainers/supergas a lot. So no you aren’t too old!

MrsMozartMkII · 17/05/2019 08:10

Mid-fifties and I wear Converse with long ish skirts and dresses. My early twenties DDs are happy to be seen out with me Grin

I'm planning on wearing trainers with my new dresses, (either Adidas or converse), and I'm mid 40's.

Verite1 · 17/05/2019 09:39

I wear my Stan smiths with floaty dresses. I’m in early 40s. Have no idea why you would think you are too old!!

Rooftree · 17/05/2019 09:40

I know everyone is different but I can never understand how people can say that salt waters are comfy for walking around all day. The sole is completely flat and so so thin that it’s painful for me after a while. And I don’t have any particular foot problems as such.

MoltonSilver · 17/05/2019 10:28

I don't understand saltwaters either. There's no cushioning.

Wear the converse.

user1494055864 · 17/05/2019 11:36

I don't understand saltwater sandals or skechers, due to the frump factor.

LunaTheCat · 17/05/2019 11:46

Saltwaters looks good but they have no cushioning and feet will be agony. I wear Birkenstock’s for city traipsing. I also wear Allbirds - merino wool, super comfortable.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/05/2019 12:02

I would wear Converse rather than sandles TBH , mainly to protect my toes from clumsy feet treading on me !

I wore a pair to a Hyde Park concert , standing all day , travelling by tube and back etc. My feet were the best part of me by the end.

(DD wore a floaty dress, white Converse and a denim jacket but she was 15 so ultra cool anyway)

SweetMarmalade · 17/05/2019 12:05

Verite1, I think it’s because I always associate (and wear) sandals with floaty dresses and converse with jeans and jegging type trousers. I’ve never really done the pumps with dress look but I’ve tried a new midi length dress on today with my converse and it looks great Grin I just needed some verification.

I’m favouring the floaty dresses lately as I’m hating my thighs, they hide a multitude of sins, plus they’re super comfy. Well, apart from needing some super control pants for the little winter belly I’ve been hiding away for 6 months! That’s on my other thread Grin
