Osprey handbag and a trench coat because they're classics. Nothing else.

Ellapaella · 12/05/2019 00:21

I have 3 of those items, two of which are make up.

Gingernaut · 12/05/2019 00:29

Score 1 for hyaluronic acid.....

CountFosco · 12/05/2019 01:57

From the beauty list only the 4160 perfume, but no FBs.

Clothes wise? No bretons, lots of Boden (been buying from there for 20 years Blush), lots of Hush (that's definitely S&Bs fault), two pairs of Converse and a pair of Stan Smiths, several pairs of Loafers. No trenches.

AndYouMayAskYourself · 12/05/2019 02:27

Parlux hair drier I bless every time I use it and I have had it for 10 years.

BusterGonad · 12/05/2019 04:42

I have a few stripey tops and dresses but not Brenton.
I have a toner by L'Oréal Revitilift so I think it has retinol in it! (40 yo now!)
I own my first pair of converse this year due to foot wear issues during monsoon season (they dry off quickly and your feet don't slip in them like flip flops), also I've just bought Double Wear as it's the only foundation to stand up to the humidity of where I live.
Not bad really as 2 out of 4 are due to circumstance.

BusterGonad · 12/05/2019 04:51

I do not own a fleece and hopefully never will!!!
I do not do gardening but when I had a huge garden with pets I'd wear my old worn out ballet pumps to feed them in, and get the logs for the fire.
I've not really got any old jeans, well a pair from sainsburys but they don't need throwing out. I just forget I've got them!
I have a old Playtex bra that is bobbled but still fits really nicely and because I'm big busted I will not throw it out until it stops supporting me as they cost £30.
No trousers that don't fit, but one pair that's really tight and makes me look a fat above the waist band! Blush
I have a gorgeous dress that I adore but doesn't really do up on the boobs, why did I buy it? I do not know, I wanted it to fit so much. Maybe one day if I drop a stone!

BusterGonad · 12/05/2019 05:24

My painting/diy clothes are my husbands old tshirts and leggings. I wear leggings around the house like some people wear joggers.

mathanxiety · 12/05/2019 06:24

Original Bingo -

  • A skincare item containing one of the following: retinol, vitamin C, lactic acid, salicylic acid or glycolic acid
  • Jo Malone item
  • Loafers
  • Stripy tops but not classic Bretons

Alternative Bingo -

  • Fleece
  • Jeans you should have thrown away
  • Greying bra
  • Pair of trousers you still think you will eventually lose enough weight to fit into

I am not sure if I am or am not a walking cliche.

QueenofLouisiana · 12/05/2019 07:41

Only 1. Converse.

StellaRockafella · 12/05/2019 09:11

A long way off a full house!

Just one beauty item albeit two different glycolic products. The Boobi Brown blusher I loved was discontinued over a decade ago so it fell of my radar then.

Three of the clothing items: trench, Converse and breton top & dress, all of which are pretty classic items that I've been wearing for over two decades, and you'd find in most people's wardrobes. Last time I wore loafers was during the Patrick Cox craze in the 90s, Not worn since as it's not a style of shoe I like. Never shopped at Boden or Hush as have yet to seen anything from either brand I'd want to wear. I think both are expensive for what they are. Haven't used a Mulberry bag since my twenties. My cardholder is from Smythson and purse from Comme des Garcons.

StellaRockafella · 12/05/2019 09:15

Also want to say that this is a really interesting thread.

I am curious to know from those who own half if not more of the OP's list, just how many you found/purchased off your own back, and how many you were introduced to via Mumsnet threads?

I'm also be curious to know if Instagram or fashion blogs were responsible for any purchases/introduction to any brands or items.

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/05/2019 09:31

thenightsky · 12/05/2019 09:36

Mine are purely influenced by MN. I don't do either Instagram or Pintrest.

TheCanterburyWhales · 12/05/2019 09:37

Stella- I find this interesting for much the same reason.
I discovered Boden here, about 14 years ago when dd was a toddler, and was one of the many back in the day on here who would wait until midnight on sale day to start filling our baskets. For small children's clothes, (great resaleability on eBay) it's second to none. Dd also has Boden children's Bretons- the quality is a zillion times better than the adults.

I like Boden stuff on the website- I am invariably disappointed in the quality (apart from trousers, which are my staples from there) when it arrives. It's also the brand that I've found the most "faults" with. A wool dress unravelled on the first day I wore it and the jumpsuit I just got for a wedding did the same in the car going there. The hem literally fell. Thankfully they have good CS.

4160 I discovered here on the Perfumista threads.

The Parlux was recommended to me on here when I asked for a hairdryer for dd.

Sam Smith/Converse etc - I imagine everyone came across them from their teenagers because they're teen staples stolen by their mums.

The EL products are both such lauded (no pun intended) icons that they're known by anybody with a passing interest in their face.

The acids I first read about on here.

The Ordinary- here.

I have another theory- threads are SO started by people who work for the smaller companies that suddenly seem to gain a massive MN following. If you look back over S&B over the years, you see clearly that a brand that doesn't advertise at all, or very much, on mainstream media, is suddenly being talked about by a lot of people on S&B. We are being product bombed. That takes off and snowballs.

Mint Velvet, Boden (15 yes ago) the Ordinary (3 yrs ago ish) Hush, Liz Earle, Saltwater, 4160, Seasalt, that sort of thing.

Look at Saltwater sandals, look at sandal threads 5 yrs ago. Nary a mention. Look 2 yrs ago. Every bloody thread is about Saltwaters. That didn't happen because one genuine MNer said they were nice.

I'm immediately suspicious of any thread that says "anybody bought anything from Name Nobody Knows?" which is followed by 20 posts saying it's their favourite product and they'd never use anything else.

I get sucked in too, and I've found my holy grails of many things on here. But I do think we are often misled by threads singing the praises of something which have been started by people from that particular company.

shitpark · 12/05/2019 09:44

12 points Blush

OhTheRoses · 12/05/2019 10:01

Not generally influenced but do want to try Prada Iris because of MNet.

ExpletiveDelighted · 12/05/2019 10:04

Whenever I see a pair of Saltwater sandals in real life I assume the wearer is a MNer.

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/05/2019 10:05

I want to try some of this perfume because of this thread! Maybe the OP works for them? 😁
