Most effective hair removal cream?

Katymac · 18/07/2007 15:43

Please don't suggest waxing as every time I wax I bruise

So I have dark hair

I can't be bothered shaving

What do I use - waay back in the 80's I would leave the cream on for 3 or 4 times the length suggested in order to remove my hairs

Have they imporved - if so which ones are best?

TIA
KMc

If I didn't wax I would shave. I don't see the point in spending so much money in creams for an almost identical effect.... What's the advantage?

Katymac · 18/07/2007 16:43

Really?
about 3 or 4 hours after shaving my legs start to feel stubbly so I was hoping for the cream to be better

Sorry, maybe I sounded I bit too knowledgable when I'm really not. I just assumed that the cream would cut the hairsat the same point as the razor. Or can it go inside the skin??

Katymac · 18/07/2007 17:43

I thought (from what I remember) that the hair grew back with a bit of a point rather than a blunt edge - I could be misremembering tho'

For my bikin line I use that foam gel stuff which comes with a plastic razor with no blade.
THink it is Veet-tis good.

Katymac · 18/07/2007 18:05

Does it grow back blunt of a bit finer?

OP posts:
Whooosh · 18/07/2007 18:07

A bit finer but not much-definitely a little less blunt but nowhere near as soft as waxing.I have legs waxed but just cannot bring myslef to do my bikini line.

kokeshi · 18/07/2007 18:13

I bought Nair for sensitive skin for the first time recently. I had my bikini line waxed once and that was enough. I get a shaving rash if I use a razor.

It worked ok, in that it removed the hairs buut it was really smelly and when the hair grew back some of them got trapped under the skin and became infected [ouch]

SO, I would recommend for holidays but I couldn't be bothered to do it all the time. Now I have a sort of two tier topiary effect.

kokeshi · 18/07/2007 18:14

oh and I don't know that they're finer, but they are curlier

smurfgirl · 18/07/2007 18:17

Shaving is better IMO.

I use a venus razor and I use conditioner not shaving gel and it works really well for me.

However I do use superdrug's own brand to do my facial hair (so glam) and it works well

sparklesandwine · 18/07/2007 18:33

i use veet bikini line cream if i need to at short notice which is good but the hair always seems to grow back quite quickly (on me anyway! ) so i go and get waxed its actually not as painful as you'd think tbh

sorry if thats TMI!

Katymac · 18/07/2007 21:14

Sorry it's not the pain of waxing - it's the fact that I end up with small bruises all over my legs & my bikini line is very badly bruised to the point that I can't wear a swimsuit

So cream doesn't really work

Shaving gives me ingrowing hairs

& waxing bruises me

So basically I am stuffed aren't I?

Hmmm. I shave my legs and underarms with a venus razor and gilette gel (apricot, yummy), and until recently used Boots own brand (is it called expert?) for facial hair, however, I am a recent convert to waxing (eyebrows and upper lip) for this which is no help to you. What about epiliation? Seems to be akin to waxing for length of time to regrow, but more like shaving in its application.

beemail · 19/07/2007 00:40

lasering???

Katymac · 19/07/2007 08:01

I didn't think lasering worked

Hmm might try an epilator - I'll have a think

I wonder what brand?

OP posts:
fishie · 19/07/2007 08:13

katymac did you wax yoruself? i got bruised legs the first time i diy waxed, never happened at a salon. waxing is best, epilation second but it takes bloody ages. cheap though!

shaving = stubble doesnt' last long
cream = stubble smell expense fuss

Katymac · 19/07/2007 08:20

I have been waxed at a salon 4 times

3 times I was bruised - 1 time so badly I had to see the Dr

1 time was OK - just a few small bruises

same salon? are they perhaps incompetent? i have had some nasty experiences, some idiot once took all the skin off my shin. sugaring might be really good for you.

Urgent · 19/07/2007 08:34

Hi Katymac

I use Veet (was Immac) and it is great. Buy the sensitive one and use it on legs, bikini and underarms. I definitely find it better than shaving (although I shave in the winter!) my legs are smoother and hair defo finer. I was surprised reading the other comments, as thought most people would wax or 'immac'. Had legs waxed about 2 months ago in salon and I had LOADS of ingrown hairs after - never really with Veet. I am off on hols on Sat so tonight is major hair removal night - am using 'immac'....

HTH

Katymac · 19/07/2007 08:46

3 different salons

1 in Warrington
1 in London
1 in Norfolk & I was OK - went there again & I ended up at the Dr's

So I am not too keen on trying again

What is sugaring?

(I think Veet here I come tho')

ProfYaffle · 19/07/2007 08:53

Katymac - totally get where you're coming from with the waxing, it just doesn't suit some people. The one and only time I had my bikini line waxed (in Warrington!) my hair follicles bled so profusely the woman doing it refused to carry on. I've had a few goes at waxing but my skin looks burned afterwards and I've been to a different salon each time so it's not down to incompetence.

fishie · 19/07/2007 09:00

sugaring is like wax. oooh you can have a go yourself i might try this.

Aufish · 19/07/2007 09:34

Katymac and ProfYaffle, can I ask where did you go in Warrington, I live there and now am feeling abit worried after reading that? I don't want to be bruised!

By the way I use Veet and have never had any problems.

ProfYaffle · 19/07/2007 09:38

Aufish - I've been to 2 or 3 places in Warrington and it was a few years ago now. It's my sensitive skin that's the problem, now the salon, I don't think you need to worry.
