Had my colours done... How do I wear colours I don't like?!

So I recently had my colours done and I'm an autumn. I always thought I'm a winter and I love jewel colours, bright colours etc. Anyway now it turns out that doesn't suit me! I like the autumn blues and the purple. And that's all!!! I usually like green but not the autumn shades and I hate hate hate orange and brown, and I don't really like red and yellow... These colours seem to make up most of the autumn colours suggested!!! Any tips?!?

Ignore it and wear what you like?

I mean I’d quite like to get my colours done but there’s no point wearing stuff you hate. That said - why do you dislike those colours so much? Makes me wonder if you’ve been wrongly categorised - just because normally, if a colour really makes someone look their best, I’d expect them to come to like it in any case because of the positive association, iyswim.

DontFundHate · 09/05/2019 21:05

I know! I was expecting a winter or autumn. I leaned towards winter because like you said, those are the colours I naturally like. I think the analysis is right though - I have dark brown hair with some coppery bits, dark brown eyes, I get freckles in summer... I think it's correct!

I definitely suit the autumn navys, I love the idea of wearing colours that suit me but don't want to wear navy forever! Maybe I just need to be braver and try some things out.

Autumn blues I mean, not just navy

I would just wear the colours you do like. Wearing colours you don’t like is madness.

WokenUp · 09/05/2019 21:19

How do you "have your colours done"? I'd like to know what I am!
I wanna be summer tbf lol

frugalkitty · 09/05/2019 21:30

I felt a bit like that after I got 'done' years ago. I'd been told as a child I was an Autumn but I'm actually a summer. To begin with, go with the colours you like and gradually add in some of the others as you find them. It will take time to get used to it, but once you settle into it you won't go back.

DontFundHate · 09/05/2019 21:30

I did the styled by Susie. There's a great FB group, very supportive. The whole package is brilliant (i did gold), I had my analysis back on Tues and still haven't read through it all properly it's so detailed. I think it all sounds like really really good advice. I went through my wardrobe today and could see that I mostly buy things that suit my shape anyway, so it's nice to know why it suits me now! And how to make those pieces work harder to suit me even more.

I think I'm just very fussy with colours. I only really wear blue. So maybe I'll just keep doing that as autumns suit blue :D I might try some of the greens. But that's all for now!! I've never liked orange, brown, those kinds of colours, not even to draw with!

@frugalkitty cross post! Yes I'm hoping so! I'll try some of the greens, I like green! And see how I feel from there. It's interesting as there were things in my wardrobe which I liked as pieces but rarely wore as they never looked right - now I know why!

Just wear what you want, surely?!

Life is too short to be miserable wearing clothes you hate because someone else said they suit you.

RosaWaiting · 09/05/2019 21:34

Ignore it

I went to a free thing once with my sister.

Apart from the lack of practicality in some of the colours, I hated a lot of them. If the colours that allegedly "suit" me are the colours I don't like, I'm not going to wear them.

my sister took on board all the advice and really believes in it, which is fair enough, just not my thing. It was funny though, because the consultant was saying things like "you're lucky, not many people could wear this orange" - I don't want to wear orange, thanks!

my sister has since bought me an item in one of the colours she thought I could try.....I first wore it to a posh bar, and matched the furniture. So that got dyed black very quickly Grin

HypatiaCade · 09/05/2019 21:34

There are so many shades of red, blue and green etc that I'm sure you could find in between colours - not as bright as the jewel colours, but bolder than the muted autumn colours, that should work.

GingerKittenHuman · 09/05/2019 21:39

Start by sticking to the colours in your palette that you like and go from there. Was your season broken down further such as deep, clear etc?

And if there are things in your wardrobe that you like, you could maybe wear them with your neutrals next to your face.

Chartreuser · 09/05/2019 21:40

I had an online package by Susie too a couple of years ago, and was shocked as she did me as a summer and I had always thought I was a winter. There are some colours that I just cannot wear (pale pinks, greens) and you will have to drag black out of my cold dead hands.

I am definitely a deeper shade of summer though, and you could be a cooler Aumtumn. Maybe look at your colour wheel/chart and just try going one or two shades out of your comfort zone at first so try and ease you in more gradually.

She is fab though isn't she, I got so much from my analysis and her online guides are worth the money too (her holiday packing one is brilliant)!

Candleabra · 09/05/2019 21:42

I'm a deep summer. As soon as I was diagnosed I knew it was correct as they are the colours I've been drawn to my whole life. I'd just lost my way in my mid 30s in a sea of black. I'd be sceptical if you really feel those colours are jarring. Did you do the session with anyone else? The best bit of the whole day was seeing the transformation on the others, I couldn't believe the change when their wow colours were draped.

ShagMeRiggins · 09/05/2019 21:47

OP, was this purely an online service? That is, did you meet in person with Styled by Susie in natural light, then get measured for proportion, etc, to determine your style?

What was the process?

frugalkitty · 09/05/2019 22:39

I had my colours done with House of Colour years ago and one of the things the consultant said was that we are often instinctively drawn to our colours. I just knew there was no way in hell I was wearing orange so I was pleased not to be a spring! Although I was shocked to be a summer, when I really thought about it I realised that my favourite colours are pinks/blues/purples/aquas and I love Monet paintings which was the example she gave to represent summer. I was in a 'black goes with everything' stage of life (mid 20s) so to start with I focused on buying summer tips in my best colours, then swapping out my black trousers for navy. You don't have to chuck everything else and start again, but you'll find as you wear your best colours that you will get compliments.

I struggle with being an autumn too. My wow colors are tan and chocolate and brick red but I feel like mr hanky in brown. I’m a head to toe navy / grey / black person historically.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 10/05/2019 00:21

I'm a reluctant Autumn too but I'm coming to terms with it. I hate brown because it was the colour of my school uniform with an orange shirt/jumper.
I am, however, weaning myself off black. I can see it drains me without going out make up and jewellery. Am trying very hard not to wear it for work, at least near my face!
I have a couple of Bombshell dresses in Autumn colours (blue/green) - currently low carbing so will be wearing them very soon.

MrsBennetsnerves · 10/05/2019 00:39

I had my colours done years ago and was shocked to find I was a Soft Summer. I was an ex goth with nearly all black in my wardrobe. Eventually I realised that black really did look absolutely terrible on me if I wasn't compensating with a ton of makeup, and even then it wasn't optimal. I'm still fairly restrained with the range of colour in my wardrobe but what I have mostly fits into the palette and I no longer wear any colours next to my face that make me look ill. A previous poster mentioned hating brown as it was a school uniform colour. I was the same with navy but am completely over that now. Find the colours you actually like within the suggestions you've been given and use that as a starting point. Gradually you may get to like other colours too.

tobee · 10/05/2019 03:53

I'm with you op. I did a basic online test and am probably autumn. I'm desperate to be winter though!! For a start, all the winter celebs are far cooler than the autumn ones. Grin

Mummaofmytribe · 10/05/2019 03:59

It's not legally binding 😉wear what you feel happy in. There's never any harm to trying something new, but if it turns out not to be your preference just forget it. We always look better when we feel confident I think

GirlRaisedInTheSouth · 10/05/2019 04:23

You can change your colour if you don’t like it! I was a typical Autumn and, like you, hated Autumn colours. It wasn’t intentional, but I gradually died my hair darker until it was a dark warm brown and acquired a tan. I am now officially a clear! Although in my heart I always was as I prefer those colours.

GirlRaisedInTheSouth · 10/05/2019 04:34

Sorry, I meant you can change your SEASON if you don’t like it.

PinkOboe · 10/05/2019 10:40

Hmmm my consultant covered up our hair when she was doing the draping thing and said it was irrelevant, it's all in the skin tone
