Had my colours done... How do I wear colours I don't like?!

So I recently had my colours done and I'm an autumn. I always thought I'm a winter and I love jewel colours, bright colours etc. Anyway now it turns out that doesn't suit me! I like the autumn blues and the purple. And that's all!!! I usually like green but not the autumn shades and I hate hate hate orange and brown, and I don't really like red and yellow... These colours seem to make up most of the autumn colours suggested!!! Any tips?!?

You don’t have to wear all the colours in your season, just pick the ones you do like

senua · 10/05/2019 11:31

Any tips?!?
Wear your 'proper' colours near to your face, that's the most important place. Are you a scarf person?
Try to stick to your palette: it makes coordination so much easier. I know that any item in my wardrobe will 'go' with any other.
Don't junk stuff, that's too expensive. Just make future purchases from the autumn range and you will get there in time.

JaneJeffer · 10/05/2019 11:51

Wear what you like. I find wearing colours I don't like puts me in a bad mood even if they suit me. I'm happiest in black.

DontFundHate · 10/05/2019 18:48

Thank you all! I'll keep giving it a go. Will be a change to go shopping next time looking at things I would normally ignore. We'll see!

Still laughing at winter celebrities being cooler! That's so true!! Are there any cool autumn celebs? Bonus points for autumn pear shaped celebs!

I have found myself buying far fewer clothes. I used to buy every black or grey jumper or dress I saw. I’ve bought barely anything for 3 years as I don’t see much in my colours and what I do see I don’t like 😂

LegoCardSwapper · 10/05/2019 19:15

OP would you mind telling me what the process is? Briefly is fine. I'm very tempted by the gold package!

banivani · 10/05/2019 19:28

I’ve always wanted to get my colours done because I’m attracted to the idea of getting a Right Answer to the question what suits me 😉 I know if no place to do it where I live and diy tests confuse me because I waffle between being autumnal or wintery. However I now realise they do tonal versions of the seasons and I might then be a deep or dark autumn which pleases me because there’s more saturation in that, it’s closer to jewel tones. 👍🏻 I was idly reading this article yesterday elementalcolour.com.au/blog/dark-autumn

rotrue · 10/05/2019 19:48

I got my colours done and I'm a dramatic Autumn - I suit all the deep colours - I beg to differ with them on beige and cream and a few other and I also look good in black so I still wear it and a crisp white shirt under a crew neck. But it has helped me with online shopping when I want to buy something a bit brighter I will go for the autumn shades if I like them. So now I'm wearing more colour that suits me but I am also wearing black and navy - never grey, I agreed with them on that. Nice brown clothes don't come around often but if you see them give them a go - you'll look amazing. I love orange and red turquoise, aubergine, kingfisher and teal, I even bought a mustard coat that looks amazing. So my advice is to keep the colours you love and experiment with some new ones and don't be a slave to it!

DontFundHate · 10/05/2019 19:59

Ah yes sorry I did mean to say. Styled by Susie is online on her website and there's a FB page which is really supportive. There are different packages but I went got gold which was £55. You send photos of yourself and you get a shape and colour analysis, what kinds of clothes suit you, what to avoid. Colours that suit. Also included in my package was a jeans guide with links for jeans to suit and a makeup guide with specific shades to buy. You also get given a style personality which helps you to narrow down the types of looks you like for Pinterest etc, capsule wardrobe ideas and celebrities to follow for colours and shape. It is so detailed and really really fab! I do love the analysis, just getting to grips with the colours

I also bought a separate package called basic bitches £20 which is like the core pieces needed for your wardrobe.

I have been styled by Susie (& am a autumn too!) . There was a post on her Facebook community page about colours and she said herself that it's a guide only and is meant to show you what may suit you more, but not stuck in stone!

fudesina · 10/05/2019 19:59

I think it grows on you tbh. Once you start wearing your colours you begin to see the difference and veer towards those in you palette.

LegoCardSwapper · 10/05/2019 20:45

Thanks so much! I think I'm going to do it.

DontFundHate · 11/05/2019 06:48

Hope you like it! I really do recommend the fb group too if you haven't seen it already, it's like a very happy cult!

Thanks again everyone for your input. I won't donate anything just yet, it's interesting how some of the pieces which "don't suit me" are the things I don't wear often. I've also been fancying trying out some of the greens and yellows from my analysis after your ideas, I won't be in blue forever!

I always thought I was an autumn but actually I'm a deep winter. I have dark eyes and hair and my skin has a yellow undertone but I'm incredibly pale. I was always drawn to deep winter colours and now I'm just wearing those. The Styled by Susie crowd are great. A lovely positive community.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 11/05/2019 07:31

I was gutted to be Autumn, my wardrobe was pretty much black and blue. But I love it now, I have a whole rainbow. Beige coats, tan or brown leather bags and shoes. Gold jewellery.
At first the palette looked like sludge but actually mustard, burnt orange and khaki look amazing on.
Follow a few deep Autumn Pinterest boards to get inspiration.
I don't have a lot of

Rooftree · 11/05/2019 07:40

I’ve just read that you had this analysis done online with a photo? Having had mine done at house of colour (in person, all the draping) I cant see how it can possibly be done accurately by a photo

rotrue · 11/05/2019 09:55

It's basically if you have a warm - yellow tint to your skin you need to wear cool colours to rebalance the tone. Autumns have cooler toned skin so need to wear warmer colours to stop their skin looking grey. Generally knowing this makes shopping more efficient, which means less time in changing rooms trying on the wrong clothes.

Lipstick is the tricky one because the warmer lipstick shades make your skin look better but make your teeth look worse - ie yellow.

katseyes7 · 11/05/2019 10:08

JaneJeffer l'm with you 100% on that. l feel strange if l wear colours. l do have a bit of the Goth about me, though.

happytobemrsg · 11/05/2019 10:55

I definitely like the idea of having this done!

Rooftree · 11/05/2019 11:30

Rotrue, I’m afraid you’ve got it all the wrong way round. Cool toned skin needs cool toned colours and
Warm toned skin needs warm
Toned colours. All the colour analysis systems work this way. Also autumn is warm Toned skin and colours, not cool

floraloctopus · 11/05/2019 11:41

Wear what you choose and not what it dictates. I always thought red didn't suit me but i bought a red top the other day and it really makes a difference to how I look, it's not a colour that most people would suggest for my skin colour.

rotrue · 11/05/2019 11:45

@Rooftree Well they screwed up with me then! - I have cool toned skin and I'm a Dramatic Autumn and if I don't wear warm colours I look dead!

Rooftree · 11/05/2019 11:49

Sorry rotrue! I’m not wrong though. If you’ve been diagnosed as an autumn yes you will look better in warm colours for sure but that’s because your skin is warm toned not cool

Destinysdaughter · 11/05/2019 13:03

OP I feel your pain! I had mine done many years ago and I was an Autumn which I was dreading as I mainly wore black. However I now have a wardrobe of beautiful clothes which suit me and match each other.

I started off by buying a few scarves in my new colours, ditching many of my black clothes and taking my swatch with me when I went shopping. It did take time to make the change but it is really worth it. Autumn clothes aren’t the most fashionable but I’d rather wear clothes that suit my actual complexion.

The best rule of thumb for me was learning that you are either blue based ( cool), or yellow based ( warm ). So for me, I can wear blue but only if it has some yellow in it, so turquoise not navy for example.

HTH and enjoy your new wardrobe!
