Where do you buy your tall clothes

Hi.
I'm 43 and 5' 10.
I buy (and return lots to) from Next and Dorothy Perkins. Really sick of the polyester and the cuts DP use are terrible.

Where can I get some decent tall clothes made from normal fabric! I would like Fat Face for example, but no tall.

I so fed up at this stage of my life trawling through websites, finding something nice and then having to check if they do it in longer length etc etc.

Help, I'm frazzled.

M&S do a lot of their socks in 6-8 which is a bit bigger, not much I know but it is a slight improvement on the usual 4-7 sizes.

Has anyone tried the Wallis clothes because there is a pair of belted navy cotton trousers on their website which say 34 leg, I’m 33-34 length, and I wondered what the clothes were like as they look ideal for work

RedRiverShore · 05/05/2019 19:00

Oh, I see upthread they might be 31 inch at Wallis, I might buy them anyway and report back as there is a bit of a discount, in fact I might order a couple of things as there is free delivery over £50

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 05/05/2019 19:55

BikeRunSki, some of the 'My God, they actually fit!' socks in my drawer are Bam. I really like them.

RedRiverShore, ta for the M&S socks tip. Seems I need to go and take a look at M&S in general, as apparently this year's selection there is pretty good.. I did buy a pair of trousers there last year which were sort-of long enough - okay with Converse.

Drogosnextwife · 05/05/2019 20:04

I'm also 5' 10. I like Hollister jeggings but it's a hit or a miss with the longer length, sometimes they are good, sometimes not so much. River Island longer length are quite good. I find the way DP cut their clothes just don't sit right on me and the last time I tried next the stuff still wasn't long enough

RedRiverShore · 05/05/2019 20:16

These come up reasonably long in M&S, best to get on one of their 20% off days as quite expensive.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 05/05/2019 22:32

As a 6ft-er I also fully embrace the cropped trouser look (most trousers look too short on me, but for now the too-short-trouser s look is everywhere Grin

Hush do longer length harem pants which are long enough (normally have 34" leg jeans for reference)

citykat · 05/05/2019 23:01

Hema is mainly bits and bobs and a few basic leggings and t shirts- wouldn't pin your hopes on it. More clothes in the Dutch branches, limited in U.K. Stores. There's one in Centraal Station in Amsterdam and handily also one on the concourse between the airport and the railway station at Amsterdam airport. Esprit may be worth a look- my local boutique stocked it til recently and is v popular in Germany where they are also tall. Esprit is also on the airport/ station concourse at Amsterdam airportSmile
Arket is good- I'm 5 10 and have a dress from there that's midi and bordering on too long. And the waist is in the right place which is a rare thing.

roseinparadise · 05/05/2019 23:38

My biggest bugbear is when tall dresses are lengthened in the skirt but not the top. Meaning I have a waistband sitting on my rib cage

Daddylonglegs1965 · 06/05/2019 08:09

I feel your pain OP.
Recently I have started getting back to sewing as their is so little out there in the shops for us. Crazy when you think women are much taller nowadays (yet still plenty of petite and plus sized in the shops).
I am early 50’s, 6ft and a size 22 so I can’t even get anything from anywhere other than LTS.
I have had two midi dresses from Debenhams/Principles last year but goodness knows what has happened to that collection this year.
If you are tall and much slimmer than me LTS, Next, Boden, Gap, Seasalt, Sahara, ASOS, Top shop might work. Monsoon has the occasional maxi in.

dumdumdeedum · 06/05/2019 08:55

I'm tall, I have a long body and trouser rise, my legs aren't actually that long. So high rise jeans sit like low rise.

I've come to hate clothes shopping, due to the lack of choice and expense of needing tall. Also limited colours and choice.

I hate the waist sitting under your bust issue with dresses.

And I hate polyester Grin

Can someone suggest some Dutch brands I can order to get UK delivery please ?

BikeRunSki · 06/05/2019 09:01

I want to like Seasalt, but the waists in their dresses barely sit under my boobs, and the legs on their trousers are too narrow for my “athletic” calf muscles.

Baxdream · 06/05/2019 09:09

Oh I love this thread. I wish clothes shopping was easy!
My clothes are generally next, top shop, ASOS and new look.
I do get basics from elsewhere- Tesco and asda. Asda do longline basic vests for £2.50, they are fab as they almost cover my bum they're so long.

I wish primark would do a tall range.

I just got some hush pjs in tall. It took me forever to find them though as nowhere seemed to do cotton pyjamas. I wanted white company style but failed!

dumdumdeedum · 06/05/2019 09:14

@Boatsexer how does the postage work out on the collection link you gave ? If I order a few things from different sellers ? Also I guess I pay returns ? I'm tempted to get a few sale bits, I'm so desperate for some new summer tops.

Placemarking for tips. 5.10" here, 40 years old

Katiepoes · 06/05/2019 11:47

Okay - I live in Holland and want to know what Dutch brands you know please. I shop at Cos, Arket, Uniqlo and the odd thing from Esprit, none of which are Dutch. Some of the retro brands like King Louie are good too but you have to like their style, it's very print heavy. The better end of the Scandinavian brands are usually okay, like Sandwich, Summum, Second Female.

Hema clothing quality is terrible, it's cheap looking and washes badly, nobody I know would buy anything beyond underwear. They used to be good for tights but the past years have gone down - one or two washes and they lose elasticity.

It's long been a complaint amongst my friends, I am the average in our group at 1.78, the tallest is 1.84, and the choice is poor, in a country with the tallest population in Europe. There are shops that specialise but they are expensive and the assumption seems to be tall = wide and boring. And lets not get started on the polyester...

Daddylonglegs1965 · 06/05/2019 13:16

In my experience it seems petite are fairly well catered for in the UK and they can also save by buying some items from the children’s section.
You can also be petite and plus sized.
Plus size is fairly well catered for.
If you are tall young and slim you can go to Top shop, ASOS, Newlook, Dorothy Perkins Tall maybe Next etc. As well as get away with wearing some things from non tall ranges as I did when I was young tall and slim.
But if you are tall and wide you have had your chips.

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 06/05/2019 19:43

Have any of you ordered from USA brands which do tall ranges such as J Crew and Banana Republic? You have to pay duty and international delivery rates I think. I’d like to try but wondered how it works?

SolitudeAtAltitude · 06/05/2019 20:27

Some high street brands are good for tall people, imo, I can wear most Jigsaw and Toast

Panticles · 06/05/2019 21:06

Let me know about socks. I own a husband with size 6 feet and socks are a nightmare.

Shmithecat2 · 07/05/2019 07:55

The longest Jigsaw do in some of their trousers is a 32" inside leg. Sadly, still firmly flapping way above my ankles... as for toast - most of their trousers are fitted for those around 5'6 with a maximum outside leg of 39"... my inside is 37... so thoroughly half mast, and probably indecently low waisted.

I get that 5'6 - 5'9 is tall compared to the average womens height in the UK. But when I hear women call themselves tall at that height, I just think to myself 'yeah, ok then Hmm'.

CallarMorvern · 07/05/2019 11:04

I'm just short (haha) of 5' 11". Don't have a problem with jeans these days, as I'm happy for skinnys to sit just above my ankle and generally flares are longer cut for wearing with heels. ( I have some 34" from Sainsbos, which I stocked up on). Trousers can be an issue though.
But my height is in my torso, dresses never fit, the waist ends up under my boobs. Blouses, all the darts are in the wrong place and the cuffs sit too far up my arms to even fasten sometimes, I have one J Crew fitted blouse which is lovely. We won't even mention swimsuits. I have two women's jackets that fit, both charity shop finds, one from Hobbs and one from Vintage Collection(?), One long casual vest dress from Sainsbury's - who sometimes to have oddly long stuff, marked regular which then ends up on the sale rail - win, win.
Mainly I wear men's jackets and shirts,I like Ted Baker shirts. Primark basic plain TS and camis were OK until they altered the sizing, I was the perfect 14, but now 12-14 is too big, 10-12 too small.

Tisahardlife · 07/05/2019 19:06

I'm 6"1 and went to Amsterdam about 6 months ago, gutted I missed out on tall clothes shopping as I had no idea...LTS here, but it's so expensive!

citykat · 07/05/2019 19:13

madamegazelle have not ordered specific tall range but Banana Republic was my work outfitter of choice for many years. Their trousers were generally long enough for me without needing 'tall' so would expect them to be good (am 5 10). I do also have success with Uniqlo trousers but they do sit above the ankle. Have had dresses from Joy where the waist has been in correct place too.

RedRiverShore · 08/05/2019 10:47

Just reporting back on the Tall Wallis trousers, they seem to fit me perfectly but I am 5'10 with a 33" inside leg, I measured, so they are similar in sizing to Boden long and some M&S long so no good if you are proper tall.

The actual trousers measure about 31 inches but they are the style that would not generally reach the floor anyway so for me they are just right. I thing they should be called Long like Boden and M&S as Tall is stretching it a bit and a bit misleading. I would say they were for about a 33" inside leg so happy that they fit anyway and will look at Wallis clothes again now
