really unhappy with my hair

I've just had a mobile hairdresser out on the recommendation of a lot of people in the area. I wanted a choppy bob, like the picture, and she left me with a sticky mess, with awful layers in the back, that is loads shorter than what I wanted and that I've actually washed because it felt so horrible

She didn't put a side fringe in and I had to ask her to do that. And I had to ask for more layers. And I gave up as it was starting to come across like she was annoyed with me

The pictures are the kind of style I was hoping for, what I've been left with and the straighter style is just now because I couldn't stand what I'd been left with

Does anyone have any tips on what I can do with it while it grows out please? Seriously wish I'd braved a salon now Sad

Put waves through it?

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 01/05/2019 17:46

I'm growing out a choppy bob OP, you can't just wash and leave mine, it had to have oil and then mousse in & be blowdried or some kind of heat styled to look any good. Hence why I'm growing it out as I'm tired of the kerfuffle, I like to wash & leave my hair :)

Have you put any products in yours yet? Its a lovely brunette and shiny :)

dancemom · 01/05/2019 17:47

You need really thick hair for that style in the photo, your hairdresser should have told you that if you showed her it.

I'd look into volumising options

AllTheCakes · 01/05/2019 17:49

From the pictures, it looks like you have quite fine hair? That style probably more suited to someone with thicker hair that can take more chippy layers without being too thin. Happy to be corrected on this though?!

You will need to use salt spray and curl it to get some volume and texture in to it.

Drogosnextwife · 01/05/2019 17:50

That model has LOADS of product through her hair to make it stay like that. You will probably need to have a look and see what products work best to make your hair keep the messy look.

Imupallnightto · 01/05/2019 17:50

It’s because you need very thick hair to pull that look off. She really should have told you this before to manage your expectations:(

fiorentina · 01/05/2019 17:54

You need to use a sea salt spray or wave that style to create more volume. It doesn’t look a bad cut but your hair is thinner than the photo. Adding some colour would also create more texture. She should have probably suggested how you could achieve that look or a more low maintenance similar style.

Blossom28 · 01/05/2019 17:55

Your hair is too thin to actually look like the picture

Fresta · 01/05/2019 18:04

Sorry, but your hair was never going to look like the photo- your hair is too fine. It's probably good that your hair is a bit shorter than the model's- that will help it look fuller. You need to add volumizing products before drying and swish it around to get the look. Some highlights would create more texture and depth and movement to your hair too.

pinklemonade84 · 01/05/2019 18:24

She just made a fuss about how lovely it would look

I'm not a confident person, so I don't have my hair cut very often. And the past couple of times has left me a bit deflated

I'll have a look for some salt spray to add some texture in the meantime and look into styles to suit thin hair

and thank you for all of the suggestions too xx

Russell19 · 01/05/2019 18:41

Yours isn't thick enough for that :( the model has so much product and its all back combed too!

The last photo of you is lovely though!

I always seem to be disappointed with hair cuts too no matter where I go.

SummerHouse · 01/05/2019 18:45

I think it looks really nice. Flowers

pinklemonade84 · 01/05/2019 18:47

I'll try and have a go at putting in some waves once dd has gone to sleep

And then I'll have a look for some volumising products to get me through the mean time. It will grow back, I just wish she'd made a different suggestion that would have looked better, as I'd sooner change my expectations and be happier the end result

I love styles like the one you wanted but I’ve had to accept that they just don’t work on my fine hair. Plus I’m lazy and I could not be bothered to faff around with products and sectioning and blow drying and whatever else.

FWIW I think yours looks lovely. If you can’t have exactly the style you want could you have some highlights put in or otherwise jazz it up a little? Might help you to feel like you’ve had something nice done?

WifOfBif · 01/05/2019 18:55

I agree, you need loads of products. The models hair does have really short layers if you look closely, her hair is just thicker and has been styled.

Have a look at some YouTube tutorials, buy some hair products tomorrow and have a play around.

For what it’s worth, I think your hair looks really lovely.

Aimily · 01/05/2019 18:55

Unfortunately as pps have said. Your hair isn't suitable for the style. I'm forever asking my hairdresser for choppy styles with a thick fringe and she always has an alternative (she's been my hairdresser for 10 years so knows I'll bring pics) that works better for me because I have fine and very little hair.
Your hairdresser should have told you that the cut wasn't achievable and asked if you have any alternatives, that is disappointing, however I love the colour and I think you can rock that short length, I would suggest using a defuser coupled with mouse when drying to push some volume through or adding some curls

ShagMeRiggins · 01/05/2019 18:57

Those saying the model has thicker/more hair—I’m not convinced.

What the model does have is a fuck load of products and professional styling. It takes a tremendous level of time and effort (and products) to get hair to look like that. Easily an hour to get that look.

Ninkaninus · 01/05/2019 19:09

It is down to a fuckload of products and styling, no question about that, but it’s also down to her hair. It simply doesn’t work on my hair, and it wouldn’t no matter what, even if I had a skilled professional doing it for me every day - they might be able to go through the motions of cutting and styling it that way but it wouldn’t actually look like that photo does.

keepingbees · 01/05/2019 19:14

You have got a bit of a side fringe there, it's just not styled like the models.
Try Shockwaves volumising mousse. It's cheap and the best I've found to give volume and body. Then I think you need to wave it with a curling wand.

ShagMeRiggins · 01/05/2019 19:14

Fair enough, Nink. I did question whether any extensions were used in the original photo. Also whether the OP’s hair was long enough to begin with.

I’m sorry OP that your stylist didn’t discuss this and manage your expectations. Stylists often suggest an alternative and speak very clearly about what they can do to you to make you look your best.

Ninkaninus · 01/05/2019 19:19

It’s not a big deal and if I sounded snappy at all I’m sorry - I have a ‘discussion’ with my OH about my hair on a fairly regular basis because he refuses to believe me about my hair being a bit shit for the kind of hairstyles I’d like to have, he thinks it’s me being negative, and it drives me crazy almost more than any other argument we have, so I may have sounded annoyed when I really wasn’t!

I really do envy people with thick, luscious locks.

TeaForTheWin · 01/05/2019 19:21

I think it looks nice op. Is it a big change for you? Sometimes that can make it feel awful at first until you get used to it.

I agree with the suggestion to put a wave or two through it. A nice hairclip might make it feel more girly and pretty too.

Also you look like you have fine hair like me...a good volumizing hairspray and dry shampoo would also be your friend to add some oomph to it.

Ninkaninus · 01/05/2019 20:22

Anyway go bring it back to the OP:

I really do think your hair is lovely. Try it with some waves and some texturising spray. It could also just be that you need some time to get used to it.

pinklemonade84 · 01/05/2019 20:35

I've attempted to add waves with my ghds but they're not very good. I'll try with my heated rollers next and see if it goes any better

I've added some moroccanoil dry texture spray, which I think has helped a bit
