Seasalt

I've just come across Seasalt clothes but before I spend ££, are they seen as frumpy or fashionable?
I'm a convert from cheap supermarket or charity shop clothes who is trying to be smarter and more stylish.

Who cares as long as it’s something you like and which fits you and suits you and your lifestyle. I like some of their clothes, particularly their summer dresses.

SinglePringle · 30/04/2019 13:45

I find them frumpy, unimaginative and dull. I don’t like the washed out colours.

WobniarRewolf · 30/04/2019 13:50

I've got some Seasalt tunics and I love them - I find the cuts very flattering and I like the material. They also wash very well. However, I find some of the other stuff a bit shapeless, so I think it depends what you're looking at.

jenthelibrarian · 30/04/2019 13:50

I like some things, others I think are ghastly, much like any other shop.
The fabric quality is good, and things wash well.
Their sizes are massive, real 'vanity' sizing.
I'd say good for sale bargains - keep you eye out for things you like and snap them up reduced.

flowery · 30/04/2019 13:54

I can't see how it matters what they are 'seen as'. Either you like something or you don't!

moomoogalicious · 30/04/2019 13:58

I like seasalt, but I find some of their stuff isn't very good quality. I bought a leather bag which cost £££ only to find the strap has broken after a few months. A dress had holes in it, which I returned, only for the replacement to get holes.

keepingbees · 30/04/2019 14:06

I've seen some of their tops in charity shops and they always look a really odd shape and very short. Not sure if this is normal for them or not.
Like all brands I think there's good and bad. Buy what you like and what suits you. Most people won't know the brand you're wearing

floraloctopus · 30/04/2019 14:10

Thanks. I didn't want to buy them if there was a universal view of them as middle aged and frumpy (which I am!). I'm buying some of the t-shirts, I wondered about the tunics but I'm not sure how well they will suit a larger figure. I'll pretend I don't know about the vanity sizing until I've lost some weight! I have one of their raincoats and it is fantastic & great quality.

Wearing a SS striped Breton today - it's a bit short in the body for me (I', 5'8") so I won't buy another, but again I think the quality is good.

I don't think they are "trendy" though.

Xiaoxiong · 30/04/2019 14:28

I have a lot from Seasalt, the kind of thing which I used to buy from Boden many years ago... I have about 50 of the long sleeved Breton t-shirts, velvet and tweed skirts, and some lovely cotton knee length skirts. Never got on with their trousers or dresses as I think they cut for a more pear shape than I am.

GraceMarks · 30/04/2019 14:55

They're very much like Fat Face and White Stuff, in that they have the occasional gem but also a lot of weirdly-patterned shapeless stuff which can be very frumpy. I think you're better off with the plain-coloured jumpers and maybe the stripey tops, but avoid anything that could accurately be described as "cheerful" or "fun" unless you're 8 years old.

HeronLanyon · 30/04/2019 14:59

Fit - often small and agree short
Fabric - often stiff and a bigger to iron.
Prints - often really lovely and interesting up close (ie on hangar) then small and insipid when worn
Style - Simone once said it all looks like frumpy townie desperately trying to look coastal and failing. Not sure.
Anyway after loving it when opened in Penzance around 10 (?) years ago haven’t even been in one for 5 or 6 years.
Stiff and awkward.

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/04/2019 15:00

Ooh, I love cheerful. I like Seasalt but it's definitely mostly for the middle-aged like White Stuff. I'm long past the idea what I won't buy it if it's seen as middle-aged but if all the elderly women in town are shopping there I give it a pass.

missmouse101 · 30/04/2019 15:04

Quite like their stuff but a bit pricey!

RooKangaroo · 30/04/2019 15:11

I massively rate their raincoats (I have two and love them; get so many compliments on them), but haven't found anything else there that I like or think is worth the money.

I've also learned to be aware of how they style the clothes in the brochure/website. They're big fans of layering, and I've often realised (after ordering a piece and trying it on and not liking it) that I've fallen in love with the overall look or style, rather than that individual item itself.

In summary - you should buy a raincoat and use it every year! Avoid most other stuff!

Fooferella · 30/04/2019 15:15

I love their breton tunics and I just bought a tunic made of ramie and cotton in a pear colour which I love. The breton tunic is quite old and probably gets washed weekly because it's one of my go tos and it still looks good enough to wear to work without looking scabby.

I should clarify that I am over 40, size 18/20 and don't give a rats ass how fashionable I am. I try to buy good quality, comfortable clothes in natural fabrics and seasalt fit the bill.

I haven't tried any of their skirts or trousers though as I'm a jeans and trainers mama.

GraceMarks · 30/04/2019 15:18

RooKangaroo that layering trick always fools me in White Stuff as well! They're very good at putting together tops with cardigans with skirts with scarves and making you want to look like that, only to find that the whole ensemble would cost upwards of £200.

Fairylea · 30/04/2019 15:18

Being brutally honest it is very frumpy. My dd aged 16 hates me dragging her round the seasalt bit in John Lewis because she thinks you never see anyone under 55 looking at their things (I’m 38 so I’m proving that one wrong)!

I do like their stuff - it’s well made, good quality, nice to wear and washes well.

But sure it’s never going to be sexy or trendy. If you care about that sort of thing... I don’t!

thedevilinablackdress · 30/04/2019 15:22

Good raincoats, decent fabrics. Mostly too patterned for me. I hate the term frumpy though... another way to put ourselves down.
You like, you buy.

hippermiddleton · 30/04/2019 15:33

I've just realised I've been wearing my two Seasalt denim skirts on rotation for most of the winter.

I quite like the catalogues because in my head I could be that breezy, Cornish artisan potter mum with a couple of lobster pots. It's harder to see myself as a jolly pony mum (Joules) or a jolly surf mum (White Stuff).

OldJoseph · 30/04/2019 15:45

I've not been that impressed with them. I've found the tops short and the fabric too thin and shapeless. Also too many items with round or scoop necks which annoys me for some reason. I bought substantial looking shoes that fell apart after one winter.
So not as good as I'd hoped.

thedevilinablackdress · 30/04/2019 15:45

The key is probably not to buy all your clothes from the same brand, so you don't end up being a walking embodiment of their 'look'

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 30/04/2019 15:51

I prefer Mantaray in Debenhams, as well as Fat Face, for that kind of thing - which I love!

Hollowvictory · 30/04/2019 15:54

Swathes of tent like fabric. Make everyone look enormous. But pretty fabrica

SolitudeAtAltitude · 30/04/2019 15:58

I have a beautiful yellow summer dress from there, from a year ago.It is cut very well and flattering and natural fabric, and washes well!

But their raincoats make me look like a giant toddler!

Try it out, is what I would say Smile
