Seasalt

I've just come across Seasalt clothes but before I spend ££, are they seen as frumpy or fashionable?
I'm a convert from cheap supermarket or charity shop clothes who is trying to be smarter and more stylish.

The company must have done some product placement posts a couple of years back as every other thread was about Seasalt and raving.

The stripy long sleeved tops are very good quality, probably second only to Joules.

I've noticed that their sizing is NOT vanity sized, and they must often use really short models as what looks like a longish tunic on the website is basically a slightly longer than average t shirt in the shop. (Eg I am 5ft 10 and a 16-18 in a Seasalt top, a 12 in a WS/FF. Hmm

The coats always look like a Fisherman's Friend advert tbh.

stopwoofing · 30/04/2019 18:57

I find their standard is short on me, but the long is too long - i wouldn’t say they’re frumpy, they’re like toast to me in that they are a different style that is not always cut in the most flattering way deliberately, not super revealing, not super close fitting, that has a particular appeal.

hammeringinmyhead · 30/04/2019 20:11

I was in their Clarks Village outlet yesterday and there was a lot of sludgey brown and purple floral stuff. I think it can be quite teacher-chic if you are petite and slim like a Felicity Jones type.

I would look horrendous in this length skirt.

MalevolentPrawn · 30/04/2019 20:15

Their cotton breton sailor tops are fab.. wash beautifully and keep their shape.. I also have a lovely jacket and bag from there. I don't like everything, but there are some nice bits.

Tanaqui · 30/04/2019 20:22

It's generally good quality and I have the Janelle raincoat which is amazing - kept me warm and dry in a Scandinavian winter. However I would say it is not at all fashionable, so depends what you want really. (Someone once dissed Boden by saying it was for people who didn't want to have sex- well I work with children so that is pretty much how want to look at work thank you!).

stopwoofing · 30/04/2019 20:25

their leggings aren't wonderfully long lasting - I've had a few with holes in quite fast (faster than say, Tu or boden) but they are soft and a nice shape.

I agree I don't think max sexy is always the look you want to go for at all times, not really appropriate for the school run and shuffling around with a toddler, friendly, approachable is more it really.

floraloctopus · 30/04/2019 20:26

That would suit me as well Tanaqui. I've ordered some of the tops and will see what they are like.

Boden for people who don't want sex you say?
Grin

I don't like the frumpy washed out look of then

Decormad38 · 30/04/2019 20:35

I bought a striped dress from there which I wear for work alot. The matching wrap cardigan I don’t wear as it lost all shape. My favourite purchase was Moses slip on sandals that have never been off my feet. It’s a mixed bag. I haven’t actually seen anything for about a year I would want to wear tbh.

weebarra · 30/04/2019 20:36

I like their tunics, jumpers and jewellery but their trousers just don't work on me. And yes, I also buy boden, joules and white stuff. Walking mum stereotype, me.

HeronLanyon · 30/04/2019 20:58

My favourite purchase was actually a pair of pyjamas ! Soft and lovely. All tops (have not bought Breton ta) have ended up too small (hmm have I actually put on weight?) stiff and just odd cut.

Murinae · 30/04/2019 21:06

Their sales are really good and I have a few of their tunics which I love and they wash well. I also have two raincoats which are waterproof and good quality and I’ve worn a lot.

Murinae · 30/04/2019 21:07

You can also try stuff at home and send them back for free. They just had a money off offer but I thinking finished last week.

Sadik · 30/04/2019 21:12

"every other thread was about Seasalt and raving"

I love their organic leggings, but I'm not sure they're ideal for a rave....

Izzy24 · 30/04/2019 21:13

More than 90%of their clothes are made in China despite their ‘inspired by Cornwall ‘ slogan.

So not for me. ( plus they are expensive for what they are, frumpy and don’t fit well) ...

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 30/04/2019 21:19

I have a raincoat from Seasalt which I feel is frumpy but always gets compliments from people that are very much not frumpy, so perhaps it's so 'normcore' that it's actually cool Grin. It's fab for a wet and windy walk though.

I have a browse of their sales now and again but rarely buy anything as it's all a bit twee and bland. Quite well made and just very...inoffensive.

The sizing is insane though - absolutely massive.

Moorfields · 01/05/2019 05:17

It's a bit pattern heavy for my liking & I'm a short arse so the sizing is a bit hit & miss.

I've bought a few items from Sainsbury's Premium collection, uniqlo, zara, cos & h&m. I tend to mix up brands so I'm not a walking advert for any one brand.

Ellapaella · 02/05/2019 10:23

Similar to Toast imo, although Toast is very highly thought of on Mumsnet. Quality of material is good but design of clothes is quite simple and not very exciting - you won't stand out in a crowd or set the world on fire in any of their clothes.
I have a Seasalt raincoat and love it - not super stylish but very good quality and has lasted so well, it's 4 years old now and still going strong.

stopwoofing · 02/05/2019 10:26

yes it's definitely like toast, it's deliberately cut not to be that revealing as a look. You have to take care at a certain age as it's easier to pull off on the young and naturally unfrumpy.

I do love the Toast knitwear - I agree, it's really not what you want for a hot date but it is luxurious. Still waiting for their sale.
