Best quality cheap brand

What do you think is the best quality 'cheap' brand? Or do you think they're all hit and miss? Is there one that's, for the money, good quality (I know you have to pay more for the best quality, but imagine your budget doesn't stretch to that).

When I say cheap I'm thinking M&S prices and down Next/Apricot/Primark/Matalan/New Look/H&M/supermarkets etc.

I've found TU from Sainsbury's to be good quality for basics.

New Look is always rubbish ime.

Primark cami vests, vests and hoodies are always good. well made, wash well
Asda women white long sleeve t-shirts and stretch jeans keep shape, look good
H&M tshirts

M&S tights and Stretch Jeans
Debenhams red herring and blue cross sales are good for bargain

Argeles · 28/04/2019 14:03

H&M leggings are great.

TSSDNCOP · 28/04/2019 14:38

Uniqlo

Honeywort · 28/04/2019 14:44

I’ve bought some vest tops and t shirts from Lidl in the past and been really pleased with the quality

NuffSaidSam · 28/04/2019 15:00

I bought some PJ's from Lidl, spontaneous mid-aisle purchase, and they're great actually, they've been worn and worn.

Definitely uniqlo

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/04/2019 15:32

Never shopped in uniqlo what do people recommend?

Ypsilanti · 28/04/2019 15:47

Unicolour merino wool jumpers. £25. I have about 10 (not exaggerating).

I spent £65 on a merino wool jumper from Hobbs that shrank after the first (hand) wash. Meanwhile my Uniqlo ones go in the machine at 30 and go on year after year.

Ypsilanti · 28/04/2019 15:48

*Uniqlo not unicolour, obviously

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/04/2019 15:50

I usually buy jumpers from jigsaw and Hobbs I’ll check out uniqlo

SwimmingintheDeepBLUESea · 28/04/2019 15:55

They all have good and bad.

Morrisons are great for socks though - they don't shrink or loose any stretch when tumble dryer like most others do. Their basic leggings are also good - hard-wearing and not see through (come up big though so may need to go down a size). Their DC clothes not as good though - tops tend to shrink over time.

Asda is very mixed for women's clothes but DCs clothes are usually good, last well and don't shrink (except their socks).

M&S cotton nickers - not sexy but so very comfortable and virtually indestructible.

Floisme · 28/04/2019 16:04

Overall I'd agree with Uniqlo. I've had decent merino wool and cotton from them - but not cashmere which turned into fuzzy felt.

I think it's still possible to find something reasonably good pretty much anywhere. What you don't get is consistency because because they're always switching suppliers to keep prices down. So you have to put the time in, look everywhere and keep moving.

ragfarm · 28/04/2019 16:43

Uniqlo all the way!

TheCanterburyWhales · 28/04/2019 16:51

Uniqlo t shirts are awful though. I usually buy M&S supima cotton, so when saw that Uniqlo cost about a quarter of M&S I ordered some.
They're really weirdly shaped and look like men's.

I am in a H&M linen T at the moment and am v impressed. Also H&M £9.99 short cardies and cotton v neck jumpers are great.

Matalan is not to be scoffed at if you get your mitts on the right thing. I have about 8 short v neck jumpers that were about a fiver each.

slithytove · 28/04/2019 16:53

Asda or matalan vests
Very leggings
Primark skinny high waisted jeans

mysteryfairy · 28/04/2019 17:11

For basics in natural fibres I’d go for H and M or Uniqlo. Have to reject 90% of H and M items to find the cotton basics though...

SrSteveOskowski · 28/04/2019 17:49

I like Primark for most things. I've heard people say they wouldn't buy anything from there because it'll fall apart after a couple of washes. To be honest that makes me question how people wash their clothes. I have never had anything that has 'literally fallen apart' after a few washes Confused

The only thing I don't like in Primark are the jeans. I just don't find them flattering. Material is too thin, a lot of the time they're more like jeggings with no great shape to them and shallow little pockets.

I went into Primark last week and tried loads of them on again just to see, but no. I went back to River Island for my trusty Molly and Amelie jeans.
I know you were saying somewhere cheaper OP, but I paid €50 per pair (I'm in Ireland. I think they're about £40 in the UK) and this was to replace my previous pair which had been washed and worn to death for nearly 3 years.
It's worth paying a bit more for those and they're not 'break the bank's expensive.

bingohandjob · 28/04/2019 18:15

Uniqlo. I found their supima t shirts to be brilliant quality as long as they're not the white ones! I'm wearing the navy, grey and black a good three years on after LOTS of wash and wear and still really pleased with them. The white ones seemed to have a different finish and didn't stand up to the use.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/04/2019 18:24

I’ve had primark stuff which is good quality lasted years, didn’t “literally fall apart” at all
Their hoodies are really good, better than GAP,and no obvious branding which I like

TeaAddict235 · 28/04/2019 18:36

I find Lidl's long sleeve cotton tops really good basics. But sometimes the colours are a bit garish (think tan brown rather than mustard or dark brown, or coral rather than muted pink).

I also second Sainsbos I've got 2 dungaree dresses from there and they are robust .

pearldeodorant · 28/04/2019 18:40

I second Sainsbury's clothing - I've found some great bargains and lovely work clothes too.

I agree new look is awful quality. Primark is hit and miss, as is ASDA. H&M I never seem to find the "nice" things that my friends do!

My biggest bargain success in recent years are Tesco bikinis. They're better than any I've ever had and have stayed nice over a year or so too; I normally replace them after about 18 months but these two are hanging in there! Won't waste money on other brands again and i love the designs.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/04/2019 18:43

I also put the work in and rummage in tk.maxx got some huge bargains

NuffSaidSam · 28/04/2019 19:56

These are all great, thanks.

Will definitely try the Uniqlo jumpers. Are they fairly long? I bought some leggings from there once, but they seemed to be sized for a very short person.

I've had some stuff from Apricot that lasted really well, but more recently a lot of it seems to shrink/bobble at first wash or just be badly made.

optimisticpessimist01 · 28/04/2019 20:04

I don't actually think I've ever bought a bad quality item from any of the supermarkets Asda/Sainsbury's/Tesco/Morrisons

Primark have some decent stuff, I like getting nightwear from there.
H&M are good for basics

I find M&S and Next good for random items of clothing that you don't need to buy a lot of unlike your basics e.g. a nice top, good pair of trousers, a work outfit etc.
