Can I wear a playsuit at nearly 50?

I'm very tempted by some playsuits I've seen. We're off to southern Spain in August and I think they look lovely and cool.

I would get quite a demure one, not skimpy and with either capped sleeves or wide straps. I am 5ft 6 inches and weigh 12 stone and a 12/14 and my legs are still good. But am I too old?

You'll get away with it in Southern Spain if by that you mean Costa del Sol. There are lots of ladies older than you wearing younger styles.

Zoobedoo · 24/04/2019 18:11

Yes wear one! You can wear whatever you want.

Pinkyyy · 24/04/2019 18:17

OP just go for a nice summer dress. I think playsuits are definitely for youngsters.

Bunnybigears · 24/04/2019 18:18

You can wear whatever you want, try one on and see how you feel.

millythepink · 24/04/2019 18:21

It's Seville so more of a city break really. Have plenty of dresses already so fancied a change.

If you like. I know someone of near 50 who absolutely rocks playsuit/catsuit chic.
I'm too short and fat for one, and whilst that in itself doesn't put me off 100%, the thought of having to take it all off to go to the loo does!

gerispringer · 24/04/2019 18:25

Something like this from Uniqlo might be ok nothing too short or tight when walking around a town though.

Oops sorry posted twice

I find one of the advantages of getting older is I can wear wtf I like, I don't need to impress anyone.

Wildrose19 · 24/04/2019 18:27

I was going to say if your legs are good and you say yours are so go for it.

madeyemoodysmum · 24/04/2019 18:30

I have 4 play suits and I’m 48. I love them They all have sleeves and look no different than a dress. I do have good legs tho.

mimibunz · 24/04/2019 18:35

I don’t like the name play suit as it sounds like what you put a 3 year old in, and with my 51 year old bladder I would pee myself before I got to the loo. But if you want to wear one and it makes you feel good then do it. 😁

Floisme · 24/04/2019 18:37

I agree about the name - it's so infantalising it sets my teeth on edge. But the outfit itself is just above the knee culottes with a joined-on top. If you feel comfortable in a short dress and anything sleeveless or short sleeved, and you've got good bladder control then I don't see the problem.

mantlepiece · 24/04/2019 18:40

Yes you could wear one but I wouldn’t at that age. It’s not about being demure. You will see women in their 70s on the beach in a costume looking great. It’s the style. Shorts and a top or a mini dress will look great but a play suit will look mutton dressed as lamb.

BringMeTea · 24/04/2019 18:45

Wear what you like. No such thing as mutton etc. Be confident in yourself.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 24/04/2019 18:45

Oops, not sure for Seville, I was assuming beach holiday. Seville is a bit more culcha'd. You won't be able to wander into the Alfonso XIII in a play suit.Grin

CountFosco · 24/04/2019 18:58

Find some you like, try them on, buy the one you love. MDAL is a hateful misogynistic phrase.

millythepink · 24/04/2019 19:12

I love that Uniqlo one!

I think I will try a few on and see how they make me feel.

EatenByDinosaurs · 24/04/2019 19:37

Yes absolutely, wear whatever you want. As others have said mutton dressed is a revolting and outdated phrase.
I take them for city breaks as they're so practical, sort of a one and done outfit, no need to faff matching tops to bottoms, just grab a cardigan and go.
Plus they're easy to dress up for restaurant, casual evenings etc and I find them a lot more comfortable than separates in the heat.

HaventGotAllDay · 24/04/2019 20:04

Not for a city break, no.
Nobody over the age of 4 should tbh.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/04/2019 20:37

If you're in Seville you might be visiting churches and some devout Spanish people are offended by shorts in church.

millythepink · 24/04/2019 21:20

If we were planning on visiting churches then I would dress more modestly, obviously.

I like that you can just pop one on, pull on some sandals and grab your sunnies and go. I always think separates are harder work and don't look as sleek.

Fine on the beach, but a bikini or cossie would be better. Not for general sightseeing though, at any age past 25. For a play area, theme park, pool, water park and wrangling small children, anything comfortable goes. If you can manage the loo too, then great: you are not too old.
