Clothes to avoid thrush

Penfold99 · 23/04/2019 22:51

I'm getting recurring thrush. Ou've been advised to stop wearing jeans, tights and leggings and told to wear 'loose fitting cotton trousers' or skirts with bare legs. I'm 5ft 3 so loose baggy clothes or long skirts make me look even shorter. Until now i have lived in jeans outside of work and leggings with dresses at work. What the hell do i wear now?

Do you wear cotton underwear? Can also be diet related I think

FrowningFlamingo · 23/04/2019 23:00

Cotton underwear and dry iron your pants (not steam!)

Penfold99 · 24/04/2019 00:58

Yes Ive always worn cotton underwear and not worn tights. I need clothes recommendations. I don't know how to keep my legs warm if I am wearing a skirt and am not supposed to wear leggings or tights. I am seeing a future where i just wear baggy cotton trousers for the rest of my life.

Stockings

TacoFlavouredKisses · 24/04/2019 05:48

I recently bought these and have gone back for other colours: www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-straight-leg-trousers/p/p60226191?image=SD_01_T57_7066_P6_X_EC_90&color=black&prevPage=plp

They're lovely and soft, not super baggy and can be worn for work and casually.

Maybe also worth trying a probiotic if you don't already - Bio Kult are great and this version particularly might be helpful: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004SBE2DS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RN-VCb9TT9EFV?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Okay I feel your pain OP because I can't take a hot plain water bath without getting thrush.

I wear tights from Marks and Spencers but I cut a small hole in the gusset.

During the summer I wear white 3/4 length leggings under summer dresses but I cut an aeration slit in the crotch seam so I'm nicely cool.

Hope this helps.

Lisette1940 · 24/04/2019 06:13

I can't wear skinny jeans but am okay with looser fitting boot cut jeans.

MiniTheMinx · 24/04/2019 06:15

Do you use fabric conditioner?

Lisette1940 · 24/04/2019 06:18

Just also to say that I became allergic to thrush creams and that was irritating the skin and allowing the thrush back. It's a ruddy nuisance isn't it?

AsleepAllDay · 24/04/2019 06:18

Need this thread! I wear cotton knickers but it's currently agony to wear anything

Lisette1940 · 24/04/2019 06:26

Ironing your pants too as someone said upthread. Hold the iron on the gusset.

BoogleMcGroogle · 24/04/2019 06:53

I had this problem about a decade ago. I wore loose pyjama trousers at home ( hippy shops are your friend here) and maxi skirts. For work, I discovered the opaque hold-up. Not easy to get hold of, but a lifesaver. Calzedone had lots in stock then, and John Lewis has a few pairs. They work brilliantly at keeping legs warm enough and look just like tights of course.

Canesten did me no favours at all. It caused irritation and inflammation, making each recurrence worse. I was eventually prescribed another type of cream, but doctors weren't especially knowledgable, beyond Cantesten. I'm still prone, but now take 2 oral treatments 3 days apart at the first sign. And eat a lot of yoghurt!

Best of luck!

BoogleMcGroogle · 24/04/2019 06:54

Oh, and no knickers when possible. You need the air to circulate!

AsleepAllDay · 24/04/2019 20:40

I'm going to check out the M&S cotton trousers

I already wear cotton pants but they don't feel any better! I've really not known pain like it, there's one swollen bit that's so tender I feel like skin might break, and scratching it is only a seconds long relief!

Redken24 · 24/04/2019 20:42

Try no fizzy drinks and no pants when possible

Penfold99 · 24/04/2019 21:54

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions for clothes and the probiotics too. On fouth canestan treatment (so spent nearly £50 in the last month) and its doing nothing! Will now research diet though if it tells me i should avoid red wine i won't be happy!

Are you sure it's thrush Penfold? I thought I had recurrent thrush but it was thrush then an ongoing skin irritation. I cut all sorts of things out of my diet too. or is it thrush which is being passed back to you by a partner?

I well understand your frustration.

Lisette1940 · 24/04/2019 21:59

just to say Penfold my doctor prescribed a steriod cream called trimuvate to be used after my oral thrush tablet and that knocked the whole thing on its head.

thislido · 24/04/2019 22:12

I’ve been through two periods of getting it every month. The first time it was knocked on the head with a long prescription of oral tablets but the second time that didn’t work. In desperation I looked up the advice on the NHS website which said to use aqueous cream (like E45). I think the theory was it drives the moisture away from the skin. Anyway, I thought it sounded laughable but I had nothing to lose so I tried it. It worked. After a while I worked out I only needed it at certain points in my cycle and then eventually I didn’t need it at all. This was never suggested by either of the doctors I saw, no idea why.

JinglingHellsBells · 24/04/2019 22:16

@Penfold99

You need crotchless tights:)

Pretty Polly make a style called Pretty Cool which has no gusset. They are perfectly decent otherwise.

JinglingHellsBells · 24/04/2019 22:18

I would also suggest you see your GP for a swab if nothing clears it up. Thrush can be confused with lichen sclerosus (can be serious and in 5% cases become cancer) and also lack of estrogen (in women in peri menopause.)

Lisette1940 · 24/04/2019 22:20

Jingling duly noted! many thanks for the link!

Penfold99 · 24/04/2019 22:21

Saw GP who has sent off swab so should hopefully know in a week if it is thrush. E45? Anything is worth a try!

My GP also recommended dermol shower cream ( not the bath stuff) to clean the area. It's slightly antibacterial but in my case I'd thrush and a slight skin infection. It soothed the area. Then I applied a thin layer of the prescription steroid.

You need to be careful that you don't slip on the dermol and as it contains parafin, keep away from naked flames. ( No pun intended)

thislido · 24/04/2019 22:30

Sounds weird I know, but I’ve posted that on here before and other posters said it worked for the too!

You can use it as a soap substitute but I’d suggest applying it (externally) once you’ve dried off too.
