Do any women wear suits any more? Calling lawyers and other professionals

I went into a professional career as a graduate 10+ years ago and used to wear suits - all the trainees did.

I’ve now had a baby and work in a less formal environment.

I’m going through my wardrobe and having a clear out and wondered if it’s worth keeping suits? I have some nice ones (Reiss etc) but they are all at least 6 years old. Although classic styles.

My current job doesn’t require them, but if I moved jobs is it possible I would need them again?

I do go into the City for work and seems to me that even the female lawyers etc are wearing dresses with jackets now rather than actual suits?

Is women in suits a thing of the past?

Dresses with jackets are popular now as you’ve said, if anyone does wear a suit it’s usually with a very slim leg so the shape maybe out of date from 6 years ago.

Chillyegg · 09/04/2019 20:41

Very bright suits are trendy and trouser suits are but with a slim leg or a massive flare or over sized blazer

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 09/04/2019 20:48

I work at a solicitor's firm and have noticed this. The suits seem to be dying out. It's more of a mix and match with jackets being worn for client meetings although some don't even bother.

As a trainee I remember having lots of suits!

I have kept them though in case I interview for a new job (provided I lose about 2 stone to fit in them!!) or for the rare occasion in Court.

Notcontent · 09/04/2019 20:49

No, you are right - it has become a lot more casual. Even the younger men don’t tend to wear suits unless they are going to a meeting...

And as others have pointed out, the suits that women do wear are a bit different, so I would ditch the ones you have.

Notcontent · 09/04/2019 20:52

Shoes are different too!! Lots of younger women not wearing high heels unless it’s an important meeting/event.

CraftyGin · 09/04/2019 20:54

Suits are so easy. Reach into wardrobe, extract suit and blouse. Rummage for tights. Job done.

FreeButtonBee · 09/04/2019 20:54

I haven’t worn a suit in about 15 years. Dresses mostly these days, mostly long sleeved or 3/4 length rather than the old sleeveless suit dress style. I don’t even really wear jackets but plenty do partic Chanel style boucle ones or shorter nipped waisted styles.

Pattern is also more common - more on the sober style than really loud but flowery/abstract/jewelcolours all quite common. One MD even wears DMs but she is totally bad ass and I can only hope to be as amazing as her when I am a grown up!

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/04/2019 21:34

I think they're dying off tbh, I work in finance and rarely see a woman in a suit anymore. Dresses with coordinating but not matching jackets seems more common for smart dress. I actually went for a couple of interviews recently-albeit internal ones - and didn't wear a suit for either.

MinecraftMother · 09/04/2019 21:36

I am a partner at a law firm and I wear both.

I've got a gorgeous navy blue suit with both trousers and a pinafore dress.

Good luck!!

evilharpy · 09/04/2019 22:30

I work in finance, not law, and very rarely see suits any more. I saw someone wearing one the other day in a sort of maroon colour with very slim cigarette trousers, it did look very modern and was lovely. And another lady always wears a black suit with straight or slightly bootcut trousers and it looks very dated. I’ve retired all my suits. A couple of pairs of ex-suit trousers that I liked have been on holiday to the dressmaker where they have been slimmed and shortened, and the jackets have gone off to the charity shop.

TipseyTorvey · 10/04/2019 08:20

I have several hobbs and lk Bennett suits that now seem way too staid for my very corporate office. The young'uns came in about 6 years ago all casual and us older ones seemed to follow suit. I tend to wear a range of coloured jackets with contrasting cigarette trousers now or dresses with a different colour jacket so it doesn't look like a suit. Also very high heels are rare in the office these days which is a relief for my feet so just block heels or kitten heels now. I would sell yours on ebay and bank the cash for if and when you need a new interview outfit. I have been to several interviews recently and didn't even wear a suit once.

stucknoue · 10/04/2019 08:27

What about for interviews, have one tomorrow and suit doesn't fit

JaceLancs · 10/04/2019 09:31

I retired all my suits quite a few years ago
I am more of a dress person now or slim trousers plain top with a mismatched jacket
Today I’m wearing navy skinny ankle grazers with navy pointed flats a lightweight navy thin jumper and a cream and navy striped jacket

BlackPrism · 10/04/2019 09:55

at my office (journo) the men do. Women wear lovely dresses and trouser/skirt with shirt combo.

Only the commercial staff wear their actual suits (with crazy sky high heels 👠 ).

BlackPrism · 10/04/2019 09:56

@stucknoue I just wore a grey professional dress for my interview 18mo ago. Didn't see any women in suits.

eurochick · 10/04/2019 10:32

I'm a City lawyer and can confirm suits are rare these days, even for court. I have a couple of fairly old ones and do feel good wearing them, but mostly now wear dresses and contrasting jackets.

ReginaGeorgeous · 10/04/2019 19:52

Another financial services bod here and rarely see a woman in a suit these days. It's all smart dresses in my office, including women in customer facing roles.

GraceMarks · 10/04/2019 20:11

Civil servant here, and even at our HQ, nobody really wears suits. The men go for open-necked shirts and the women mostly go for smart dresses or co-ordinated (but not matching) separates. I'm not sure why suits are out of favour, but personally they remind me of Apprentice candidates, which is never an appealing prospect!

Picclothes32 · 10/04/2019 21:49

Work in financial services. Not many women wear suits but I still do: super nipped waist, 50s vintage designer suits (think slim-skirted 50s Dior). Always get compliments on them and they look kind of timeless despite being 70 years old!

Bayleyf · 10/04/2019 21:54

Never in my Westminster/ City nexus.

Jealous of your vintage suits pic . Where do you find them?

Ponks · 10/04/2019 22:04

I like suits 😞
Work in finance & feel scruffy without a suit. Am just about the only woman in the office wearing one though. I don't do dresses.

TigerDroveAgain · 10/04/2019 22:10

Another lawyer here working in a reasonably corporate environment. I don’t possess a suit. I wear various styles of dress with boots or brogues, some smart some very casual. Today I wore a long jumper, leggings and cowboy boots (not to see clients though!)

TheWayOfTheWorld · 10/04/2019 22:15

Another partner in a law firm here. Very few suits, lots of dresses (with or without jackets), trousers or pencil skirts (including leather ones) with blouses/shirts and a blazer/jacket/cardigan.

Personally I don't wear suits as they make me look dumpy (took me a while to figure that one out!) but I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid at someone who did wear a suit, IYSWIM.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 11/04/2019 02:44

Life was much easier when you could just throw on a suit for work, never had to think what shall I wear today? Does this jacket go with this dress? Etc.Etc. Bring back the suit!

StarlightLady · 11/04/2019 06:18

I only have one suit now, but it us so versatile. It consists of jacket (sorry stating the obvious)), then you have the option to wear it with the matching trousers or the matching skirt or the matching dress. So, it’s 3 outfits in one.
