Skirts and trainers on the over 40s

desperatehousewife2 · 01/04/2019 08:43

Can this be done in a way that doesn’t make me look.... odd? I’m 45, size 10 having lost 4 stone in the last year and have rediscovered my love of clothes. When I’m not at work I tend to wear jeans and trainers all the time but want to wear something a bit different on my days off during the summer.

Will this trend look ridiculous on me??

OP posts:

I'm 38 and totally embracing the skirt or dress & Converse look.

noraclavicle · 01/04/2019 08:46

No!

AuntieStella · 01/04/2019 08:50

This isn't an age related question!

You'll look just as good/bad as anyone else

It really depends on what the trainers are like - too big/cushioned/functional always looks wrong to me

Awrite · 01/04/2019 08:50

I'm early 40's and wear dresses/skirts with converse or trainers (when not in jeans).

Very comfy.

Babdoc · 01/04/2019 08:55

Why do you care, OP? All that matters is whether it’s comfortable, you like it, and it’s legally decent.
I wish women weren’t so worried about trying to please others all the time. There are no “fashion police” to arrest those deemed to offend against prevailing trends!

yakari · 01/04/2019 08:59

So I did this recently and came to the conclusion yes to some trainers, no to converse but ultimately slip on shoes or espadrilles looked best. I think the problem with converse is they came so high up on my foot it looked stumpy. The other trainers I had were only a centimetre or so lower down but it made a difference.

Caveat no one fell down in shock or laughed at me when wearing a skirt with the converse, it just bugged me all day.

PigeonofDoom · 01/04/2019 09:09

I wear it all the time- I can’t wear trousers for health reasons. Like pp, I think certain types of trainers go best with skirts eg low slung canvas trainers (converse make my feet look like canoes Sad). I also like an old school running shoe with a denim skirt eg Nike internationalist.

CoffeeRunner · 01/04/2019 09:12

I’m a similar age and wear pumps (Converse type) with skirts & dresses.

I’m really not a fan of trainers as such, but would think they’d be fine with a denim skirt. Not so much with a pretty floral dress.

At an art exhibition last weekend. There was a woman wearing a green chiffon midi dress, floral, very pretty. She had a cross body boxy small handbag, also green. She was wearing what were probably white Stan Smiths and slouchy socks, she looked amazing. She was "mature" probably 40's. I don't think age matters too much with fashion.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/04/2019 10:44

I just turned 46 and my summer uniform is trainers and midi-length dresses or skirts. I have Stan Smiths in both black and white, gold Nikes, leopard print Nikes, grey Adidas 80s, and black Gazelles. I also wear trainers with wide-legged cropped trousers a lot - in winter I wear crochet/fishnet tights or knee-high socks underneath.

I am not a fan of florals or ditsy type prints on me at all and never wear them, but actually think the juxtaposition between feminine florals and trainers can look great on the right person.

Congratulations on the weight loss. What's the point the point of all that work if you're still going to spend the rest of your life worrying about what people might think because of your age?
(Ok health is another good reason for weight loss but this is style and beauty.)

I think it's great that you've rediscovered your love of clothes but a lot of fashion - if not all of it - is inherently ridiculous. It's kind of the point. So yes, you may well look back in 10 years at your skirts and trainers and and wonder what the hell you were thinking but surely that's part of the fun?

(I prefer plimsolls to trainers but that's by the by.)

Palominoo · 01/04/2019 11:15

Not a fan of Converse at all but other soft shoe/trainers are fine with a skirt.

Palominoo · 01/04/2019 11:22

I like these

I love this look on other people but I'm very short, and desperately want to wear my Stan smiths with skirts or dresses but always feel so dumpy!

palindromeam · 01/04/2019 12:06

I'm pleased with this thread. My dd (8) pours scorn on my skirts and trainers choices to the extent that I am doubting it. I think it looks fab but she is quite persistent in her criticism.

(She has also consistently told me I am a year older than I am, to the point I sometimes actually believe her. )

I am 47 and think we should go for it.

AProphecyForAFantasy · 01/04/2019 13:34

I'm 38 and totally embracing the skirt or dress & Converse look.

I'm 52. And so am I Smile

Mesmeri · 01/04/2019 13:45

I do it... having been a teenager in the mid 90s I don't really think twice about it. Only I was thinking I need to get some little white/black ones specifically for wearing with skirts, as I was out the other day in big turquoise and yellow trail runners with a blue and red flowery dress and denim jeggings. Didn't bother me, felt very comfy but saw a photo after and realised the shoes looked a bit clownish....

GrimDamnFanjo · 01/04/2019 13:55

What kind of slouchy socks? I tend to wear trainer socks ...

thedevilinablackdress · 01/04/2019 14:31

No. You are over 40. Stop drawing attention to yourself 😉
Wear them! Have fun.

KnickerBockerGlooooory · 01/04/2019 15:48

Had to google Stan Smiths - some gorgeous colours there. Although the originals look a bit like what I would have known as Green flash? Sure they were Dunlop tho. I am not a trendy 45 yo but I am definitely comfortable wearing my white Skechers street angels ( look like converse but more comfy) to work Smile

higgyhog · 01/04/2019 16:29

The lady I saw had white trainers with 3/4 length socks - not the sort you would usually wear with trainers that a sort of falling down appearance. The combination with the very feminine tea dress was lovely. it was an art gallery and she was presumably trying quite hard to get this effect.

Quintella · 01/04/2019 16:33

with a midi length skirt or dress I think it looks great. Just avoid this look and you'll be fine.

Betty777 · 01/04/2019 17:51

Skirts & trainers are what I live in, have done for 20 years now. Usually works best with straighter skirts, but not always

You want a lower cut trainer than shows as much ankle as poss, or doesn't look too sporty. Try Vans

And why are there PPs on here asking 'why do you care what other people think of how you look?' This is the style and beauty thread. If you don't cared about it, you had probably best stay off this board? Have I missed something?

Floisme · 01/04/2019 17:58

If I'm one of the posters you're referring to then I very much care how I look. However, with one or two trusted exceptions, I no longer much care what other people think about how I look. I've found it very freeing and recommend it to all.
