Loose linen drawstring trews for middle aged fattie this summer.

Somehow I put on 2 stone last October and despite efforts (admittedly not prolonged and a bit half hearted) it hasn't shifted (definitely middle age spread). So this summer none of my wardrobe will fit and I have to face the probability of a 'fat' summer. Thinking ahead I'd like to invest in a navy, and a white/cream pair of loose linen trousers I have to be very mobile in my job so they need to fit well as I have to get up and down from the floor a lot. Over the years I've tried various makes of linen trousers and never found any that I felt really comfy in - which ones would you recommend for style and comfort?

OP posts:

I don’t think anyone else’s weight is anyone else’s business.

Some people do struggle more than others for medical reasons so let’s leave the judgement out of this and be constructive about how to make the best of who you are now.

I still hate linen trousers though! 😁

Sicario · 03/04/2019 08:48

I just bought some from M&S which should do the job.

GraceMarks · 03/04/2019 08:49

Talk about proving my point. The OP was asking for recommendations for a particular style of trouser. Not advice on whether that style might suit her, which I don't think anyone can really comment on without seeing her. Not diet advice either. I think I'm done with S&B if this is what we can expect from such topics in the future.

QueenKubauOfKish · 03/04/2019 08:50

My favourites are the H&M linen joggers, here but they are very tapered and you need to go up a size.

millythepink · 03/04/2019 08:53

I think wide leg trousers can work if you are taller than average, you need long legs to off set the width.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 03/04/2019 08:56

Well my point Grace is I have tried many from top end to supermarket brand ones and have yet to find any that don’t look crap within minutes of wearing. They aren’t flattering if you are struggling with self esteem issues over weight gain as they grow and make you look significantly bigger. They also become so uncomfortably bigger that they need to be constantly hoiked in.

The OP said she had failed to find any comfortable ones and asked for recommendations and to my mind there are no good ones! There are great alternatives though. I think a linen mix top can give you the coolness you require instead for example.

Poetry does summer stuff well and it is flattering.

Excuse me Kennehora? Did you mean to be so rude???

I go to the gym everyday even when I am ill and dangerously anaemic

There’s a big difference between taking responsibility for your weight and having a disordered obsession with it. Exercising when Ill and severely anaemic is neither clever nor commendable and is nothing to brag about.

I cross-posted with you paul and didn't mean to implicate you in what I said. Your comments have been helpful and to the point.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/04/2019 09:56

@Keenehora

You were rude. I think your comments say more about your issues than anyone else’s. Point me to the comment I made where I said I had weight issues. I was calling you out for fat shaming, that’s all. It’s not nice.

Let’s empower other women, not push them down because they weigh more than you.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 03/04/2019 10:00

Kenne surely though there is a balance to be stuck- pleasure from clothes and pleasure from food and drink?

Putting that much effort into being that thin seems to me to be more about a disordered relationship with food and a deep seated need of denial of pleasure.

Some people look and feel better with more weight on them rather than setting themselves targets that have gruelling implications. It sounds to me that if you have to work that hard at it your natural weight should be higher.

You are quite judgemental without being in possession of the facts- for example someone’s might have PCOS with insulin resistance. If you have that you can eat 800 call a day and still struggle with weight loss as it messes with your metabolism. Other people are on anti depressants, steroids, birth control etc and that leads to rapid weight gain with great difficulties losing it.

Then we have the thorny issue of peri menopause where some women’s bodies change out of all recognition even though their eating habits haven’t.

One thing though to note is that weight gain for many is nothing about them being greedy with a lack of self control but far deeper seated unresolved issues. Food can enhance mood and some people use it for this purpose.

Anyway back to the thread.......let’s be kind, thoughtful and a force for good when we can as we don’t know what is going on in another person’s life.

I'm another who likes S&B because generally the responses are actually responding to the original post. I'm overweight and tall, and I love wide-leg linen trousers, so I'm following this post with interest.

Those who want to post about diet tips or their own disordered eating or exercise regimes are most welcome to start their own threads, but it's not very useful in this one.

higgyhog · 03/04/2019 10:30

This section is called "Style and Beauty" I'm getting sick and tired of it being hijacked by people who want to talk about how all clothes need to be washed at 60 degrees, being comfortable and not bothered about what you look like etc. This is not "feminist chat"

I have been overweight some summers myself. I have bought linen trousers ( from M&S) I did think they were the answer. I was deluding myself. They covered me up and were comfortable but no, not stylish. This summer I'm not going to be quite the weight I want to be so I've bought a couple of jump suits, and some shift dresses. I have never considered the purchase of any item as much of a mistake as those horrible linen wide legged trousers.

There really are some rude buggers on this thread. Hope you find the trousers you’re looking for, OP, regardless of what everyone else thinks you should be wearing. These look good to me, I’ll be trying them on the next time I go shopping.

FFS!!!!! This is style and beauty, and no place for discussion (even polite) on medical matters. There are other threads for that.
I must say, Alsohuman, those Cos trousers look rather stylish and not like my M&S hideous ones of old. If they were navy I might put a toe in the water.......

kaldefotter · 03/04/2019 11:50

I've read TONS of stuff, proper scientific articles, about this subject. I'm not a scientist myself but I have done a lot of reading and talked to a lot of friends.

Good for you. As it happens, I don’t really rate the advice of someone who’s determined to go to the gym every day even when ill or dangerously anaemic, no matter how much reading they’ve done.

The reality is that if almost any of those people ate what I eat in a week, for example, the weight would fall off them.

Good for you. Yet still, this remains a thread asking for advice about buying linen trousers. Perhaps you’d care to start your own thread on a subject about which you’ve done a lot of reading?

Tunnockswafer · 03/04/2019 13:04

I’m dieting, going to the gym regularly and eating around 1000 calories a day deficit. This means I am losing 2lbs a week. Come summer, I will still be overweight and will need to dress myself in something Expecting people to stay indoors until they are suitably stylish is a great way to go to increase the self-hate that fuels a lot of women’s overeating!

I like linen trousers in the summer because I get so hot! I know they lose their shape so usually wear them twice and then wash to shrink back. I don't wear skirts/dresses so three quarter linens are fine for school runs etc. I tend to buy the Asda ones, think they're £12.50 this year. I'm a 14, not massively overweight (more different shape to pre-kids) but even if I was thinner I'd still like the coolness of linen for the heat of summer (even in my thinner days I wasn't one for shorts or short skirts).

EngagedAgain · 03/04/2019 14:41

I came back on to find Queen, had pipped me to the Post in saying , they don't have to be those really wide ones. Mine are not very wide. They are a linen viscose mix, but still go out shape after a couple of wears, but not as creased as only linen. From my experience anything with linen needs to start off a bit tight as they give quite a lot.

RedRiverShore · 03/04/2019 15:55

Boden have a few pairs, they are a bit more expensive but I have generally found their trousers quite good and wash well, there is generally a money off code to be found for there. Otherwise Next or M&S usually have a selection.

UrsulaPandress · 03/04/2019 17:23

Just bought 3 pairs from Asda for my hols next week.

Delighted.
