Loose linen drawstring trews for middle aged fattie this summer.

Somehow I put on 2 stone last October and despite efforts (admittedly not prolonged and a bit half hearted) it hasn't shifted (definitely middle age spread). So this summer none of my wardrobe will fit and I have to face the probability of a 'fat' summer. Thinking ahead I'd like to invest in a navy, and a white/cream pair of loose linen trousers I have to be very mobile in my job so they need to fit well as I have to get up and down from the floor a lot. Over the years I've tried various makes of linen trousers and never found any that I felt really comfy in - which ones would you recommend for style and comfort?

Nineteen, that sounds so funny, sorry. Once while trying on a belted coat, the assistant said i looked like a sack of spuds in it, and I was slim 😡

Tunnockswafer · 01/04/2019 22:24

Have you been hacked mathanxiety ? You are not normally so rude.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 01/04/2019 23:06

Oh Thankyou so much everyone. I'll definitely be checking out the Next ones, and PaulH those jersey ones look lovely too.

Kennehora, you're so lovely - what a kind and cheering thing to say. Thankyou, please have this Halo

Math I think you must've had a tough day, as other posters have said, your posts aren't usually so mean spirited. Sad

M and s ones are my fav, also not linen but primark have some nice lightweight trousers just now

mathanxiety · 02/04/2019 05:59

mathanxiety you're being really unpleasant now. Did you actually just call the OP a sack of shit?

No, and sorry for the confusion. Nothing could have been further from my intent.

I was quoting an earlier poster who commented on the look of drawstring linen trousers. Hence the quotation marks.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2019 06:20

But having carried a good deal of extra weight myself during summer months (babies born in April and May) I stand by my comment that this is the 'worst style you could wear if you have gained weight.' Been there, tried that.

The drawstring makes for a puffy silhouette around the hips, and the looseness around the thighs makes even slim legs look bigger than they are. It may seem counter intuitive, but wide leg paperbag waist trews look best on people who are tall and slim.

You need something that gives you a shape:

A shaped leg is better, whether tapered or with a flare at the bottom, and a waistband with zip and button is better than a gathered waist.

Again, apologies for causing dismay or hurt.

OxanaVorontsova · 02/04/2019 06:26

Mathanxiety is spot on, they are the least flattering style possible, tailored is far better!

Snog · 02/04/2019 08:52

If you can find cotton linen mix I think this is a much better fabric, less creasing and bagging.

Also is white a good choice if you are on the floor a lot?

Alsohuman · 02/04/2019 10:23

OP specifically wants linen for the summer so what’s the point of posting links to a pile of winter weight trousers in artificial fibres?

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 02/04/2019 10:27

THE ones I linked to are very lightweight and cool in the summer and therefore a good alternative to the linen buggers that flatter no one if you sit for more than a minute.

Alsohuman · 02/04/2019 10:33

I know the jersey ones are lightweight. I meant the links above to trousers that would boil you alive in a heatwave. I like creased linen personally but it’s not for everyone.

shumway · 02/04/2019 10:39

I'm a fattie and I live in black or navy M&S wide leg linen trousers. The elasticated drawstring waist is very comfy.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 02/04/2019 10:44

MAybe it just me but I get the sag arse and knee pouches and they just grow in the most unflattering way.

I am all for a nice bit of waistband ease believe me but I think there’s are better alternatives to keeping cool and dodging the chub rub.

Innernutshell · 02/04/2019 10:54

Asda linen trousers are amazing but they go very quick!

PouchofDouglas · 02/04/2019 11:05

Don’t. Do. It.

They look fucking dire

PouchofDouglas · 02/04/2019 11:06

I’m with math. You need support. A waistband. And not an old sack of spuds look

GraceMarks · 02/04/2019 12:05

Thing is, no amount of waistband support and structured fabric is going to make my arse look any smaller. It is a big arse. So it is pointless trying to make a silk purse out of a pig's ear, so to speak, by pretending that there is a style of trouser out there which might make my arse into a small one. Therefore, I will wear what is comfortable and which keeps me from overheating, and if I look like a sack of shit/spuds/whatever, well, that's just my destiny. I'm not going to subject myself to heavy artificial fabrics in the middle of summer in the hope that I might look half a stone lighter.

PrincessButtockUp · 02/04/2019 12:28

I'm a large apple shape and I agree about comfort being a bigger factor than style on the hottest of days. I live in cotton/linen mix trousers from Sainsbury. They have elastic at the back of the waist, drawstring at the front. They are a relaxed slim tapered shape so don't bag too badly and are very comfy but my goodness they need ironing when washed.

I also have more tailored chinos from Next, which are a thin poplin type cotton and a little more tailored while still madly comfortable.

All are thick enough to not be see through, but light enough that I don't swelter in them.

flumpybear · 02/04/2019 12:29

Not RTFT but i find Next maternity ones good as they just have a little elastic in each side - perfect 🤗

madcatladyforever · 02/04/2019 12:32

I absolutely hate linen drawstring trousers, not only do they make you look as if you've just got out of bed having slept in them but they make me look three times fatter than I actually am.
I'm putting them on the bonfire along with ballet pumps which are equally awful.
I can think of a million other more flattering and equally comfortable trousers.

EngagedAgain · 02/04/2019 14:00

I don't think any of us on this thread are being derogatory, a bit of light banter, maybe? As far as a dark linen that's ok for keeping cool if you're out of the sun. Someone once told me to get a mix of fabric as it helps hold the shape, plus you don't get as many creases. I never seem to have much luck with any of those kind of trousers, (in fact jeans too) which is mainly because I have put on weight and am pear shaped. Also difficult to get size perfect because the usually give after being worn. I think they are best worn with long loose tops (lagen look?) I have a problem with summer clothes, as I can only wear maxi skirts, yet I would really like knee length. I feel as I am getting older it's getting more difficult, not to look frumpy. Also it occurred to me the bigger one gets, one starts wearing comfy clothes. Then you don't notice you're getting even bigger! I know this because I have put on weight and struggle to lose it.

EngagedAgain · 02/04/2019 14:07

Princess, I might try those chino's, they sound a good alternative. And frumpy another idea with the maternity. Still, at least with all these drawstring linen failures, perhaps there's a good supply at the charity shops. I often see them in there 😬 I bet there's millions of them unloved at the bottom of womens wardrobe's 😢

EngagedAgain · 02/04/2019 14:09

Flumpy, apologies I've either got frumpy on the brain or I think my phone changed it to frumpy.

UrsulaPandress · 02/04/2019 16:02

I shall wear my linen trousers with pride.

The sack of shit/spud look is bound to be in fashion sometime.

Alsohuman · 02/04/2019 16:06

It is now if the Cos range (which is right up my alley) is anything to go by.
