Hairstyle looks like a mushroom!

My hair badly needed cutting as it was overprocessed from too much colouring. My hair is quite thick and has a natural wave to it. I went in to a new hairdresser’s with some pictures from pinterest that I liked and that I thought looked like they would work on my hair type.

As always seems to be the case, the hairdresser decided to give me a nice short bob. With very long front bits hanging down like spaniels ears. She proceeded to blow dry it with a big round brush and then straighten it into an almost sleek looking bob which I knew I could never recreate. It looked ok but it’s not what the pictures were like that I showed.
I also am crap at blow drying my hair and don’t like it poker straight either. Why do they always want to dry it like that?

Anyway, I didn’t like it but thought I’d get used to it. It’s now 2 weeks on and I still don’t like it and I can’t get it to do anything. It looks all uneven with the big longer bits dangling at he front. It’s also goes out wide at the sides like a mushroom!! The slanty fringe that I asked for hangs by one limp strand over my eye.

I know all I can do is grow it but is there anything I can do in the meantime to lessen the mushroom effect?!

Why oh why do so many hairdressers not take any notice of the ideas you have? I feel like I’ve had this bloody mushroom bob cut one too many times now. Is it the standard cut for a hairdresser or what? Regardless of hair type?

Oh I am feeling everyone's pain here.
I moved last year and am on my 5th hair salon. Symmetrical cutting . That is all I ask for.

"The problem with CG is that you have to invest in a load of new product specifically for it"

Tesco do a conditioner called Extracts which is CG friendly, it's 80p. Wilkos do own brand cg friendly gel and mousse that is a quid or so each. Garnier Hair Foods deep conditioners are CG friendly, and not £££. you can make your own flaxseed gel, or do an ACV rinse to clarify or use rice water for a protein treatment. it's simply a myth that it's this big expensive hassle. I get that it didn't work for you, and it's not for everyone, but it's not the huge ballaching mass of time and effort to try out that you're making out here, sorry. Yes some people on fb groups and the like overthink and overcomplicate it and spend ££££££ on masses of products that they then moan they don't like, but it honestly can be kept very cheap and simple for those that are that way inclined.

SwimmingInTheDeepBlueSea · 27/03/2019 13:52

MadameButterface I wish I'd seen a post like that when I tried it! That certainly would have been a cheaper way to try it. Personally CG didn't seem to work for me (although my hair was also very damaged from a couple of years on prescription steroids - so it was a massive challenge. Plus I was swimming regularly and I think that meant I needed sulphates and silicones to get it clean). However the advice CG gives about not brushing hair after washing was life-changing. I now brush my hair in the shower, then wash it and it keeps the natural curls.

Lunge how far did you move. I moved away from my fab hair dresser for a couple of years and still travelled to him (2hrs each way) to get my hair cut because noone else can cut it like him.
You have my sympathies if it's too far to travel and noone else seems to be able to get your hair symmetrical lengths though Sad.

XingMing · 27/03/2019 13:56

Most hairdressers cut badly and blowdry to conceal the damage they've done. No hairdryer is allowed near me unless the temperature is sub-zero. Even then, I'd be more likely to pull on a hat.

Hipposgoberserk · 27/03/2019 14:02

Hi op, I’ll PM you the name of my hairdresser-although only useful if you’re in London and willing to ££? Any use?

Lungelady · 27/03/2019 14:25

I moved a 4 hour drive away. One way.

Dinkydoos · 27/03/2019 17:11

Anyone got any West Midlands based ‘non mushroom creator’ hairdressers theycoukd recommend?!!

fishonabicycle · 27/03/2019 17:24

Another one with tons of fine, unruly, not straight, not wavy hair. I've had many a mushroom too, and wet my hair as soon as I can after the dreaded big hairbrush blow-dry. Oddly enough, I have that photo saved on my phone as am thinking about a cut (hairs been long for ages and I'm tired of tying it up, and down is s bit aging hippie, as I'm 54). Maybe something a bit longer instead.

MadameButterface · 27/03/2019 18:03

if you like the undone look, and a bit of movement to complement what your hair wants to do naturally, then you can't beat a lovely shag imo

just be sure your stylist knows what they're doing tho, because once that razor comes out it can all go a bit def leppard if yr not careful

Sarcelle · 27/03/2019 18:28

My hair used to be my crowning glory when I was young. A natural blond, straight hair in great condition. As I got older the straight haired look did not suit me so I have had a succession of layered cuts since then and most of them have resulted in the dreaded mushroom. Hairdressers never make any suggestions to me.

In the last ten years or so I can probably think of three good haircuts where I did not despair at the bouffy outcome. I find Japanese hairdressers the best. The seem to be really look at your hair rather than phoning it in like most hairdressers seem to. When I go back to the salons where I have had a Japanese stylist they seem to have moved on.

I currently have a mushroom on the sides (my flanges as my DH calls them) but a Micheal Bolton back which is scraggly long layers. I have no idea what the hairdresser was thinking of. I could have actually performed an act of violence to her, it wasnt look bad before this butchering, but instead I just paid up (and tipped!!)

I am now on the hunt for a new stylist.

Sarcelle · 27/03/2019 18:31

@hipposgobeserk I would be interested in your stylist.

HipposGoBerserk · 27/03/2019 19:00

@Sarcelle

I’ve PMd you. Sorry it’s a bit of a thesis. I’m hormonal!

MaryBoBary · 27/03/2019 20:14

My names Mary, and I too have been mushroomed.

I think with thick frizzy hair it is impossible for it not to poof out if it’s shorter than shoulder length. I’ve resigned myself to growing it again. At least when it’s long the sheer weight of it stops it poofing out too much. But it’s just so god damn hot and uncomfortable in the summer.

I have also taken the exact same picture as you into the hairdresser and never walked out with that haircut. If hey can’t do it on my hair I’d rather they would just tell me why it won’t work.

I also have had conflicting advice about thinning scissors. Usually I tell them to thin the shit out of it (Keep going! More thinning!!!) but last time I used a different hairdresser she said it makes it stick out more as it grows out. So who knows. Maybe there’s no hope.

zippyswife · 27/03/2019 20:29

@Hipposgoberserk could you PM me the London hairdresser too! My trusty hairdresser moved to Oz 5 years ago- I’ve had so many mushrooms since then.

Sarcelle · 27/03/2019 20:30

@HipposGoBerserk Thanks. Very useful knowledge.

Loopytiles · 27/03/2019 20:36

Angry about the mushrooms.

A colleague who usually sat behind me once came up to me and remarked that my hair was a mushroom, looking at it had been irritating her and suggested I change my hairstyle. Cow!

HipposGoBerserk · 27/03/2019 20:51

Done Zippys.

Sorry I was a bit over enthusiastic Sarcelle.

Shock Loopytiles!

Fatted · 27/03/2019 21:00

Hahaha! I knew exactly what everyone meant the second I read mushroom hairstyle!

I have naturally curly hair. Definitely recommend the curly girl method, but I don't follow the advice 100%. I just use the shampoo and conditioner I want. I don't wash it that often. I only brush it when it's wet. I don't use the hairdryer and let it dry naturally. I use boots essentials curl cream which is the best product in the world I've found. My hair definitely looks better for it!

NotMeNoNo · 27/03/2019 21:06

I had a year of despairing with a lovely hairdresser who could only cut an inverted bob and blowdry/straighten it. It's like they need a licence for any other style.

Blowdrying it on my own I just ended up with loads of volume and memories of the pageboy hairstyle I had as a child where people literally used to call me "the mushroom".

Gone to a different hairdresser and pixie cut now so I can't help you.

Carolcool · 28/03/2019 20:21

How do we nominate this thread for classics?? I read it last night and was laughing out loud. Spotted a mushroom do in a work meeting today and nearly started laughing again! 🍄

mimibunz · 28/03/2019 20:27

Damn, that didn’t work. Anyway, I have spaniel hair.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 28/03/2019 20:40

Mortified. Sat quietly on my own on the train to work this morning (sporting my current version of ShroomofDoom) and lady with ALMOST EXACTLY the same style got on. She sat right next to me. On the long seat. Now the whole compartment can see us.

Coiffure DeJour. Horreur.

We did not make eye contact.

MyEyesAreNotDeceivingMe · 28/03/2019 21:00

Sympathies with all this mushrooming. I’ve had my fair share. I have poker straight fine hair but loads of it. I seem to alternate between mushroom hair and Lego hair.

I’m on a new stylist and so far so good but that’s happened before then bang a truly awful cut and I’m back to square one. I got so fed up that I grew it to shoulder length but was like Crystaltips. Confused
