Those of you who wear glasses how many pairs do you have? Mine were so expensive (Zeiss varifocals) I’m thinking one pair is enough ... but then I quite fancy a change of frames too ...

I have two pairs - one is my current pair (Lindberg) and one is a couple of years older (Mykita Mylon). Luckily my prescription hasn't changed. I just fancied a different look when I got the Lindbergs. I also wear expensive Zeiss varifocals so new glasses aren't cheap, especially when I seem to have horribly expensive taste in frames.

ArkAtEee · 21/03/2019 20:56
  1. I usually go designer, but found 2 pairs in Specsavers petite range that suited me, so bargain!
anniehm · 21/03/2019 20:57

I standard, one sunglasses plus any old pairs still of the Ruth prescription

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/03/2019 21:00

Plain varifocals, tinted varifocals, intermediate single vision for using the computer and distance only sunglasses.

DramaAlpaca · 21/03/2019 21:00

One pair of varifocals for normal use, and another pair of varifocals I wear at work which have no distance vision in them so I can do paperwork & see the computer screen. My glasses are so expensive I can't afford to have another pair on the go. I saw some lovely frames the other week & was very tempted, but no.

Letthemysterybe · 21/03/2019 21:05

Just the one. And they have just broken this evening! So I would say always have a cheaper pair on hand.

peoplearepeople · 21/03/2019 21:10

I have 6 now plus prescription sunglasses (and picking up another 2 pairs tomorrow) Blush
I don't seem to be one of those people who naturally suit glasses and when I find a pair of frames I actually suit I make a habit of now of often getting them or noting down the model numbers and finding the frames cheaper online. I wear them a lot and need to feel comfortable in them. I also like the option of changing them about depending on what style or colour of outfit I'm wearing. Having extra options has helped increase my confidence massively compared to when I first started needing to wear my glasses more. (not suitable for laser surgery and can only wear contacts for very short periods of time)

trader21c · 21/03/2019 21:10

Oh how annoying Letthem! Yes I also have an expensive taste in frames - so even with ‘cheaper’ lenses it’s still a big outlay ...

Three, accumulated over four years, plus one pair of prescription sunglasses. I think you need at least two so you have a spare set.

Soontobe60 · 21/03/2019 21:13

2 pairs varifocals, one of which is tinted for driving. I struggle to look at the computer screen easily and have to push up my glasses!

Snowymint · 21/03/2019 21:13

I love my contact lenses. Glasses just don’t suit me.

CocteauTwin · 21/03/2019 21:13

I just got new glasses this week - like you mine are varifocals and cost nearly £400 but I got reaction lenses so I don't need to buy sunglasses as well. My old pair cost about the same, and I can still wear them as there was only a very slight change in prescription. Both are Ray-Ban frames which I love but are not cheap.

Before I needed varifocals I always bought 2 pairs as I did like to mix things up a bit, and it was affordable.

TattiePants · 21/03/2019 21:14

Probably 9 or 10 pairs plus the same in prescription sunglasses. I did have a lot more but managed to break loads of pairs a couple of years ago. Some are probably 15 years old but my prescription never changes.

sleepwhenimred · 21/03/2019 21:14

Millions it seems. I'm always finding the all around the house. However I am an optician so perk of the job is cheap spex.

Always recommend at least a pair and a spare.

peoplearepeople · 21/03/2019 21:15

Should add that my glasses do tend to be very expensive due to my prescription but I do spend a lot of time shopping around for the best deals. They can really vary, and I'll often source the actual frames in one shop or online and then have the prescription lenses put in at an actual opticians.
I've recently found out that asda opticians thin your lenses for free and that makes a huge difference to the price. I've yet to see what the quality is like of the job they do though. Any experiences?

SapphireSeptember · 21/03/2019 23:59

I've only got one pair, I've never thought of getting more than one pair to be honest (although it would be practical to have a spare pair.) Aside from that I've been wearing small purple rectangle shaped frames since I was 17, although I've noticed they've been getting bigger which is annoying, the smaller the better for me. Also I don't recommend Boots, I don't think they did my eye test properly and they are REALLY expensive compared to Specsavers or Vision Express.

PickAChew · 22/03/2019 00:01

I have 2 in my current prescription. The pair I loved in the shop and te second pair that I actually find 50 times more comfortable to wear.

GrimDamnFanjo · 22/03/2019 00:21

I have two from Seen in Manchester. Frickin expensive but are commented on all the time. I'm very short sighted too .

AuntieOxident · 22/03/2019 00:32

I've been wearing specs since I was a child, and I have loads, mostly varifocals now and generally get two pairs at s time due to the 'second pair free' offers that lots of the chain opticians do.
(Not that the second pair is actually totally free, IME, the offer is often hedged around with conditions)
I spend about £800 every 2-3 years on new glasses, my prescription is very expensive and I have the thinnest and lightest option otherwise my lenses would look like milk bottle bottoms.
I like to be able to change frames according to what I'm wearing and also cut costs by buying cheaper frames when online suppliers like Glasses Direct have sales. Got some Ted Baker frames for about 60 quid recently in the sales.
I also have a couple of pairs of reading glasses because varifocals don't always work that well for me. I'm actually typing this without glasses on and squinting at the iPad held about six inches from my nose. And about three pairs of prescription sunglasses.

RavenLG · 22/03/2019 01:25

currently 2 pairs (although mainly wear 1) and 1 sunglasses. I need an eyetest and some new glasses will probably get 2/3 as I like to alternate the style too.

AlbertWinestein · 22/03/2019 01:38

Two and I don’t even wear glasses!

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 22/03/2019 01:48

Anyone found anyone decent online for varifocals?

Scattyhattie · 22/03/2019 02:19

I've Asda glasses, I bought 2 pair deal mainly as wanted the security of a spare but do wear both pairs regularly. Its my second purchase from asda, the 1st pair lasted about 4yrs although was bit tatty looking by end structurally was still sound.

Current frames are coming upto 2yrs so all lasted the course fine, even if aren't as substantial as ones bought at great expense & the lenses would be same I'd have thought. I like at Asda many things are included that others charge extra, for me reflective coating is a must as i really noticed the glare when pair was sent without the coating in error. The set price also includes advanced varifocals for those that need them. They do tint/transitions for bit extra too if want to have 2nd pair as sunglasses.

I also tried one of the online specs companies ( can't remember who now) which sent 4 frames for me to try but I just didn't suit any. I may order some prescription sunglasses for summer as can be very cheap & often have special offers on various brands.

Scattyhattie · 22/03/2019 02:29

opticians.asda.com/info/our-complete-price-on-glasses Great if your on a budget.

trader21c · 22/03/2019 06:56

Interesting ... what are the best varifocal lenses Asda will put in?
