Is it acceptable to wear leggings under a dress?

Mainly in the summer under short shift dresses. I'm late 30s. I don't want to look mumsy. Also don't want to look like I'm trying to be 19.

Altho tbh they are so comfy (and my legs are SO pasty) that I don't care THAT much but I'd like to be aware of the fashion sitch re this important issue.

TIA!

I hope so (was planning a dress leggings combo tomorrow)

I see lots of women doing it. I don’t think it’s necessarily fashionable but it serves a purpose and if you like it then wear it!

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 18/03/2019 23:12

I think that look has gone out of fashion now

Smellbellina · 18/03/2019 23:14

No.

Redorangeyellowgreen · 18/03/2019 23:18

I see lots of women doing it and I think it looks fine. I think technically it has "gone out of fashion" though (which makes no sense with my previous sentence about lots of women doing it, but you know what I mean)

If it makes you feel more comfortable and you're happy, then go for it, you dress for you and shouldn't have to worry if it's fashionable.
To answer your actual question on if it's fashionable though, then that's an absolute definite no.
If you're worried about length and showing too much leg, then tights will do the same job but look better, if you're worried about pale legs then fake tan or opaque tights will look better and if you e any worry about chafing in summer heat then a pair of cycling shorts would also suffice (depending just how long dress is though).

I do! As I suspected. I shall save them for the garden and top up my Garnier tinted moisturiser.... Thanks!

I think it depends on the dress, with a skater style dress I think it can look dated imo but I'm going to wear this combo with loose shift dresses and flats for work in the Summer.

Fireballfriends · 18/03/2019 23:21

I actually bought some cycling shorts earlier today for this purpose.

I do it if a dress is very short! I think it does look better with shift dresses or tunic type dresses rather than fitted at the waist more formal looking dresses

😂 Oh, technology....

ReggieWoo · 18/03/2019 23:32

If you wear black tights I think they look odd with anything other than black shoes.

My feet look like clown's ones so I have to resort to leggings.

PippilottaLongstocking · 18/03/2019 23:34

I wear leggings with dresses because I like going barefoot but still having my legs covered, also in a house with small children the chances of me standing on something wet/sticky/generally gross are pretty high and I’d rather just be able to change my socks than have to change tights (disclaimer- I am really not very stylish)

Holidayshopping · 18/03/2019 23:36

Yep-absolutely fine!

Pinkkahori · 18/03/2019 23:37

I love that first outfit origami. Where is it from?

viccat · 18/03/2019 23:46

All the ones in origami's photos look good. I think it can look a bit strange with a tea dress or something more 'floaty' in general though. And I prefer footless tights to leggings, they don't look so bulky.

They are all off Pinterest. I looked at the link and it's a U.S. company called J.Jill but looks like they don't sell to Europe. They are basic enough to be recreated though with other items Smile

Always looks terrible. Up there with early 90s shellsuits in terms of fashion crimes.

myidentitymycrisis · 19/03/2019 00:33

I like 3/4 length leggings with tunic in the summer because I’m over 50 and (can wear what I want) don’t like showing too much leg.

ChairPoseKills · 19/03/2019 00:42

Yeah, @Kaboodler, and the ladies in @origamiunicorn's photos look reeeeally "terrible" 🙄

Kaboodler · 19/03/2019 00:45

They don't look terrible but they'd look much better without the leggings. Smile

Kaboodler · 19/03/2019 00:48

The middle image is the least awful but that's because she appears to be wearing slim fit cigarette trousers rather than actual leggings.

Featherstep · 19/03/2019 00:53

It's comfy and you should wear what you like and is the most practical for your lifestyle, of course.

But definitely not fashionable and IMO very mumsy.

Personally (also late 30s) I would wear that around the house and going to the park with my toddler but would not find it 'acceptable' for a meal out, seeing friends, going to central London etc.

Trainers make the look better. No to ballerinas for sure.
