Is there such a thing as a stylish walking sandal?

Am off to Vietnam in a few months where there will be a fair bit of walking. I have found as I’ve got older that I’m less tolerant of uncomfortable shoes but still want something with a bit of style.
In the past I’ve had sketchers that took all the skin off my heels in NY and others that have rubbed my toes,🙁
Does anyone have any recommendations for a not too fugly looking sandal suitable for wearing all day?

I like sorel ella sandals very very comfy

Friedeggsandcustard · 16/03/2019 08:08

Birkenstocks? They take a bit of getting used to and so would need breaking in before you go.

feltcarrot · 16/03/2019 08:25

Have had Birkenstock’s in the past, not sure what they’d be like wearing all day, will have a look at the sorel ones.

I don’t know how much of this article if any is advertising but I just saw this

Birkenstocks for me. The shaped footbed is great. And they don’t smell.....

But if you mean properly walking ....like trekking. Merely or tens are good, but I don’t think there’s s stylish one.

feltcarrot · 16/03/2019 08:42

Unfortunately Meretricious I think you are right! Really not sure Birkenstock’s will be comfortable enough for all day walking/light trekking.

I got some reiker ones and also a pair of Ecco ones for going to Florida a couple of years ago and both were amazingly comfy for walking round the parks all day.

Holidayshopping · 16/03/2019 08:46

No I don’t think any of the trekking type sandals are stylish!

I have to say though-we did 3 weeks at Disney last year when it was very hot and we did a LOT of walking and I wore Birkenstocks-they were perfect.

Snog · 16/03/2019 08:57

I rate Ecco

woollyheart · 16/03/2019 09:00

Birkenstock's are great for walking. I wear them continuously in summer. You might need to wear them beforehand at home so you are used to them.

Will the terrain all be suitable for open sandals? I would also take walking boots in case of prickly or dangerous flora and fauna.

peridito · 16/03/2019 09:19

what style of Birkenstocks are ppl recommending for walking ? Is there one that is a bit supportive ,stops foot slipping around ?

DollyPartonsBeard · 16/03/2019 09:19

I like Teva sandals - I've had a rose gold and a black iridescent pair and I've walked miles in them.

myidentitymycrisis · 16/03/2019 09:23

Teca and Ecco are comfy and might have something you could bear. Or clarks

myidentitymycrisis · 16/03/2019 09:23

Sorry Teva

MrHaroldFry · 16/03/2019 09:30

SportsDirect do Karrimor brand which are very comfy but alas not stylish.

Lunaballoon · 16/03/2019 09:54

I really rate fitflops, both the original flip flop style with a toe-post and their sandals. So comfortable, like walking on cushions!

PurpleDaisies · 16/03/2019 09:55

Forget stylish. Go for comfort.

I’ve had teva and karrimor pairs that were both very comfortable.

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 16/03/2019 09:59

The short answer is no. I spent loads of time looking for this and in the end had to accept that if you want sandals that functionally work for walking and light trekking (so support and protect properly) then they just aren't stylish. I have up and bought lightweight trail running shoes instead and then got nice sandals to wear at other times.

seanceinterrupted · 16/03/2019 10:05

Fell, I walked most of 120km in my Birkenstock's over 3.5 days not long ago (occasional closed shoes in the rain). If they're worn in and hold your foot (ie not a style that moves around on your foot at all), they're great. If they slip on your foot they won't work.

Floisme · 16/03/2019 10:08

I've no skin in this game as I don't wear sandals (my feet burn) but, to my eye, functional walking sandals are no uglier than trainers.
I don't think this is about style, I think it's just that one is fashionable and the other isn't.

Kaz2200 · 16/03/2019 10:16

Another vote for birkenstock, they are the only thing I can walk in all day. The Mayari are good, the only ones I can't get on with are the Gizeh.

feltcarrot · 16/03/2019 10:19

Thank you everyone, I’ve ordered some neutral coloured Reiker sandals, will just have to avoid looking down at my feet! DH has declared we are travelling light😂😂, so I will hopefully only need to take 1 (or 6) other pairs for going out in the evening!

peridito · 16/03/2019 11:31

Which ones have you ordered OP ?

I'm looking at these Blush as I fear a closed toe is probably needed for functionality .....

Is there such a thing as a stylish walking sandal?
feltcarrot · 16/03/2019 12:14

I ordered these, DD is laughing at their fugliness😂😂

I can, and do, wear my birdies all day in the summer. I have the Mayari style, with straps that wrap round the toe instead of a toe post.

I only really wear my “proper walking” Tevas off road.
